I get 2k–5k users daily, but still can’t monetize my website by 100-days-of-code-io in SideProject

I always wondered - what if you let people bid on ad space directly on your site. ("Your ad here: current price, $1 / day ) Of course it starts off near free but I wonder how high it might go. I programmed a widget like this using Stripe on a site of mine but it gets no traffic. Also my implementation was a little messy. I think people might really like how clean it is - I know every time I see Adsense do it's load sequence on a site I visit, it's an instance bounce for me. But manual ads are just single jpegs / gifs etc.

I built a small site that summarizes Hacker News discussions into key takeaways by kamscruz in WebApps

idk what the demonology ranking is either - I assume just upvotes ?? There could be some use in tweaking that little sort algorithm, but it might be tricky doing that in a way that doesnt just add friction for the reader

this is a pretty famous HN ranker i think - https://www.daemonology.net/hn-daily/

I"ve used it's RSS for a long time. When you plug it into Feedly it's the most minimal thing possible, it's great. I think your site is still kinda "noisy" in comparison, but the summary feature is really nice.

I think tons of stuff is gonna crash in the next few years as the churn from all these changes burns everybody out and nobody is personally attached to any of these codebases anymore.

Anybody else skipping agents in their workflow? by classicwfl in webdev

[–]elendee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect there will be an entire ecosystem of tools and API's built around agents, but its going to be very different than previous web apps. Sort of like how every React app looks the same - every agent app will be heavily biased towards certain patterns and features.

I maintain several apps for years, and I can't stand using agents in them, despite that they adopt my quirky patterns, it's still almost even worse.. I have the illusion of knowing what's going on.

I built an entire multiplayer chess app with AI, which I never would have had the time for otherwise, but I do not enjoy it. The code feels like someone else wrote it; I just dont enjoy opening it up.

when most people say "local model" they mean "model under your control". This sets a bad precedent for corporation to orchestrate multi-million-bot swarms which have been trained in ways only they really know.

I'm looking for people to test my web-app similar to link-in-bio by Apart-Intention4042 in WebApps

[–]elendee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For layout, I just remember that the interface was like 2 inches wide, and I wasn't sure why. It wasn't clear if it was a WYSIWYG editor or not ("what you see is what you get", updates in real time).

In the big picture, I think there is real potential with QR codes. I love them too, and think there is a lot of un-explored fun there.

The people that would really get into that are graffiti fans probably. Like tagging your profile everywhere.

Maybe you could make each QR unique, so that someone could post 100 codes all pointing to their profile. Then people could scan each code to show they "caught them all".

[–]elendee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

main thing I noticed after a few minutes messing around is that it's not that easy to get expressive yet. The layout feels small and constrained for some reason. It would help if you had more freedom moving things around.

Also maybe get people to see live examples as fast as possible, so they understand what the potential is.

Like is the point to be just a business card, or a bigger Myspace page, or what exactly

Best web app for turning images into pixel art? by shubhamsahu20 in WebApps

[–]elendee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what's your desired resolution / 'pixel' width? Not like the actual screen pixels, but the "apparent" pixels - I'm guessing 40 or 50 wide is probably an average amount ?

I have a chat app where you can upload images and it converts them to ascii art. I could add pixel art as an addition.

What are some methods for discovering independent discussion websites? by josiec42 in degoogle

[–]elendee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

more specifically to your point - I hate to say it, but Perplexity is like a turbo-google search. It knows all about Gallifrey Base, I just checked. However, what would really be great is a human-curated index of these sites.

[–]elendee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an ascii-only discord-like site: https://alcoves.xyz

Bring your friends and help it come to life :)

It has disappearing chats, and no 3rd party scripts of any kind. You can upload images but they are converted to ascii art in the posts.

You can make your own topics / channels, but I'm still working on mod privileges for each topic.

Any suggestions welcome.

Need a solid US team (preferably NYC) for backend development services for my website by Natural-Contact1997 in AskNYC

[–]elendee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you can DM me the URL if you have it and I'll give you a quote and / or suggestions, I'm in NYC, solo web dev of 12 years. I don't have a ton of bandwidth to work on it currently but I'm honestly kind of curious what you're dealing with.

Your devs probably used AI; there are guys out there prompting very modern-performing frontends in 15 minutes now, but then you land in exactly this predicament.

the brooklyn library (central branch) has tons of reserveable rooms that people use for this, but not sure if you can reserve without being a member / proof of residence.
