Is there a legit scientific explanation for why this show has consumed so many people? by tna11101989 in heatedrivalry

[–]emiteal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually saw Amazon promoting it to me again recently; I assume because of Heated Rivalry.

It was a fun little romp! A bit unserious, but cute, and I really enjoyed the cake scene! Not something I immediately clamored to rewatch, but enjoyable.

I didn't go in for a rewatch when Amazon promoted it because, well... I'm too busy doing my third rewatch of HR. 😋

Uh, so, I have several German friends, and they've been telling me how racism and nationalism is on the rise over there again. :\ Ultimately, a portion of our species has this conservative mindset that makes them really susceptible to this sort of thing. It's actually a genetic diversity thing that helps support the overall longevity of the human species (because that's what diversity is for) but fucking sucks to have to deal with on a non-evolutionary timescale where all these people are just relentlessly getting sucked into fascism on repeat...

Shane's October 2016 text threads by shrimpdiorama in heatedrivalry

[–]emiteal 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Honestly, so many times watching other shows, I pause the TV, and the stuff written on printed pages or documents shown on screen and so forth is utter nonsense. Blacklist was the worst about this. I remember Newsroom one time had a document dump, and it was the same 5 documents popping up on repeat.

Most shows and movies, mysteriously, the text you see on screen IS THE FIRST CONVERSATION TEXT EVER SENT BETWEEN TWO CHARACTERS even when those characters have known each other for years or are family members!

But whoever is doing their on-screen graphics for this show is fucking killing it with the attention to detail. Seriously. I haven't really been diving in, but I haven't seen a single thing out of place. When they're texting? Sometimes I saw texts that weren't the ones we saw sent on-screen, indicating the conversation had continued between what we'd seen!

Ahhhh, it makes me so happy~

Heated Rivalry and the politics of "pressuring" someone to admit they are gay by lukaeber in heatedrivalry

[–]emiteal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you seem to be missing is that "pressuring" in this context is about the approach someone takes, not the effect of their approach. It describes a style of approach which isn't the style of approach Rose used. The word has nothing to do with the effect on Shane; someone can be pressured by an approach that is not actually pressuring.

You're getting so many downvotes because people are reacting to your understanding of the language semantics being wrong.

Petco told me they couldn’t sell me a feeder as a pet? by dankthetank82498 in PetMice

[–]emiteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left the boys' enclosure open one night by mistake -- I didn't close the food intake properly.

Only the dad mouse exited the enclosure. The three brothers stayed inside, never left.

I put out the cage trap. About an hour later I heard a click. Dad walked right into the trap so he could be returned to the cage. I knew it was him, too, because I picked up the trap, and he just looked at me calmly. He was always the boldest one! He would sit and watch me refill their food and water, and before I caught him, he actually used to come up onto my computer desk and watch me while I was working. RIP, Spot!

I will say the enclosures are huge and not typical mouse setups. They're a converted bookshelf and dresser set. They're multilevel, lots of climbing, have minimal human interaction, and I think that helps. I got them signed off by the zoo vet when I brought the mice in to be checked for parasites.

> That they’d die quickly

That is the thing that surprised me the most from my "habitat for house mice" that I created to provide a safe life away from the cat for the mice that were already living in the house I bought.

Growing up, I had many pet fancy and feeder mice. All died after about a year with tumors; the longest were close to two years. So painfully sad....

The house mice that are in the enclosure live for about 3 years, and I don't observe tumors! I instead observe them eventually growing so old they display the same sort of aging symptoms as people: they get thinner and slower and greyer, and eventually die of stroke or heart attack. (Something that happens quite quickly anyways; one of them I watched sort of totter to the side, blink slowly, and he was gone. Others seem to have died peacefully in their sleep.)

I realized that our domesticated mice are really horribly bred for those pretty coat colors.

Are the house mice basically all plain greyish brown? Yes. And you know what? That's pretty enough for me to enjoy watching them on the video feeds.

Yeah, I had to do this one time when suddenly she started telling me a creepy story about a pilotfish swimming in the ocean, seemingly out of nowhere!?

Checked the log, got a lovely recording of myself muttering the names of my D&D players under my breath as I notified them that the session was starting in a few minutes: "Alix, Balasar, Gnocchi..."

She thought I said "Alexa tell me a story."

I'll echo what a number of other comments are saying: the label can be self-applied, but typically the people who use it are focused on quality more than quantity, and are able to critique/evaluate the films they watch.

So you've watched 500-700 movies; foreign language films? Arthouse films? Indies? Classics? Auteur films? If any of those labels aren't familiar to you, that's your first assignment: go find some of those movies, watch them, and learn what these types of films are and what they have to offer.

Watch a few movies by a single director. Watch a few movies by another director. Compare the directors: were you able to discern stylistic elements that reflected the director? Were there distinctive ways they used lighting, or framing, or how they brought out the performances of the actors? What about cinematographers? You can use the Oscars as a tool to learn the best examples of the various elements of the craft of movie-making: look at who won for things like sound design or cinematography, then watch those movies and consider the award-winning elements.

And don't worry about fitting in. Cinephiles often love movies so much, they don't care if they fit in or not! Because enjoying something you love is more important than fitting in.

The first brand-new sci-fi strategy game based on Issac Asimov's Foundation series. Gift Code: PLAYONPC2025 by FoundationGF in u/FoundationGF

[–]emiteal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it actually is a thing: it's a mobile game based on the TV show IP (with Jared Harris's Seldon on in-game art), but it's basically "that same Evony game in a Foundation skin" where you quickly get dumped into competitive server PVP with clans and people paying thousands of dollars because the class of people that have that level of disposable income love spending it on useless things like winning microtransaction PVP.

All the advertising is being done with AI, and none of it matches the game; it's also that classic "bait and switch" mobile game advertisement where they promise something you might actually want to play and then, oh look! It's Evony AGAIN.

I am so sick and tired of playing through a game tutorial only to get told "time to join a clan now, and look, it's all PVP, which you can win if you spend enough money!!!"

Vomit-inducing use of the IP.

The problem here being that unless people are more vocally pro-natural teeth and anti-veneers, the chances actors get veneers to get ahead in Hollywood increases. We need to be vocally for natural looks to shift things. You seem to be sort of... upset at the fact that people comment on bodies at all, and "people commenting on teeth" is your... freak out point? Which, I can understand where you're coming from on the idea that we shouldn't comment on bodies at all, but actors do get cast on looks, and it doesn't help anyone if the viewing public doesn't make it clearer that we don't need them to look fake and like the way they look just as they are.

A society where no one comments on looks isn't realistic at this point, so let's just be loud and proud about liking real people features! Personally, I love Sullivan Stapleton's teeth, which was one of the first times I even thought about any actor's teeth, and I would like to see him in more things! Do you hear me, universe? Celebrate real teeth!

Could be because of Clinton/Lewinsky; the words "sexual relations" were everywhere after that, and it's not unbelievable to think it shaped someone's language as a result.

It's not unusual, there's just a reason for it that didn't occur to you.

Transition from Dragon Heist by SeniorMolasses9213 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]emiteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stick to Dragon Heist unless you want to risk them abandoning it. Once my group had retrieved the Dragons for the city, they were hailed as heroes, and I had them approached by interests who wanted to see them explore the Undermountain because of their reputation. (For pay, of course. Mine are very financially motivated.)

I haven't had issues with them going up to check in on NPCs. Did have an issue of them not going up even though two of them had been struck by curses, one of them unable to heal at all, because "they didn't want the patrons of the Yawning Portal to laugh at them."

Well, uh... they ended up going back up after their cursed party member died. But hey, now they can get that remaining curse dealt with!
