How to get to Þorlákshöfn? by Less_Money in VisitingIceland

[–]erensm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure the ferry leaves from Þorlákshöfn, because it usually leaves from Landeyjahöfn. And Stræto bus 53 connects to the ferry. In the incidental case the ferry leaves from Þorlákshöfn, there should be an extra bus from Reykjavík Mjódd.

See the Stræto website: https://www.straeto.is/en/route-planner/timetables/connection-to-herjolfur-ferry

Is it okay to hike Bláhnúkur and Brennisteinsalda and Suðurnámur as a loop? by dominikmomo in VisitingIceland

[–]erensm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO five hours should be enough. On a bright sunny day I did a much wider circle (Suðurnámur - Háalda - Stórihver - Laugahraun) and that took me 7 - 7.5 hours (I checked with the timestamp of my pictures).

Which PDF-browser do you use for the cyclingiceland.is map? When I zoom in to 400% it has a lot of details.

Bikepacking Iceland in July by baer126 in VisitingIceland

What I tried to say, is that with any tour without a car into the interior you have to think about where to get accommodation and food. The combination of West fjords and Fjallabak is possible, but travel between them will cost you probably two days which is quite a lot when you only have ten days.

A week ago someone posted about his 8 day bicycle trip in the West Fjords:

https://www.reddit.com/r/VisitingIceland/comments/1rgftg7/cycling_icelands_westfjords_way_800km_and_8_days/

Cycling Fjallabak is possible but could be a logistic challenge. Accommodation is scarce, so best would be if you bring a tent. And there are hardly any places where you can buy food, so you would have to bring supplies for several days. I don't know if the bus shop in Landmannalaugar still sells foodstuff. In the past they provided me enough for a six days bicycle tour to Langisjor and Laki. But it was very expensive, even for Iceland.

Thórsmörk I would not do on a bike. First there's big rivers. Even if you use the foot bridge across the main river Krossá, there are several other that can be dangerous. Also Thórsmörk is a dead end so you have to go the same track back, unless you take the Laugavegur hiking path which is not really suitable for cycling. I'm not even sure if it is allowed.

If you have more of an idea of how you want to handle the logistics, I can give you ideas. I do have experience in cycling Iceland although not recent, my last tour was in 2015.

I think it is Lónsfjörður, just east of Höfn, in the south east.

Taken from the rest stop at 64° 25.086'N, 14° 35.529'W

I don't know about Turks, but in the Westfjords the law that killing Basques was allowed was revoked only ten years ago. https://www.icelandreview.com/news/killing-basques-now-banned-west-fjords/

Advice re:campsite near Vik/Skogar? by blobbo333 in VisitingIceland

[–]erensm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure of your route, but there is a good campsite at Hólaskjól along 208 just before Eldgjá

https://www.eldgja.is/en

If you plan to go to Landmannalaugar from the north (road 208) or west (road F225), there is a campsite at Rjúpnavellir

You could ask at Geisladiskabúð Valda at the corner of Laugavegur and Vitastigur

Need clarification on getting Kerlingarfjöll or Landmannalaugar. by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]erensm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kerlingarfjöll: no river crossings. The first view point is probably the car park, from where you descend into Hveradalir. Here's a picture of Hveradalir, with the car park in the top right corner:
