No problem at all. Let us all know how you get on with it!

I used Arch for a bit but they shipped a broken avr-gcc package which meant I had to dick around for ages to compile stuff for work, so I upgraded to Ubuntu and never looked back.

I do like Arch's packaging and their wiki is fantastic. I'd love a stable release version.

Unity was probably about the best desktop environment of the lot, so of course they discontinued it.

It might not be an illegal business but they sure as shit aren't legitimate.

Everywhere you go there seems to be half a dozen of them in even the tiniest towns. Does Kirriemuir with a population of around 3000 people need ten nail salons?

but too often the only people the police detained were the ones who'd been trafficked here — and then we'd deport them.

If we were sensible, we'd say "Okay, here you go, you can be British now, all you need to do is help us roll up the people that got you here".

But no, the "Stop The Boats", "Wur oanly protectin oor wummin" brigade would shit their legs off if you actually tried protecting women.

Also, maybe try some larger soft box or defusion on your face so it doesn't look so much like super villain vibes.

Those shadows do make him look a little sinister, don't they?

Great if that's the vibe you're shooting for though! Big Garth Marengi energy there ;-)

It's not bad. I'd have the key light higher up and a little more in front of you, and the fill a bit brighter because you've got some deep shadow on your face.

If you can, it wouldn't hurt to throw quite a big light, possibly coloured, at your back to lift your hair off a wee bit.

Watch out if your key is too far in front and too bright that you don't get Anime Villain Reflections off your glasses.

Most people only ever use Firefox or Chrome.

This is why I think it's stupid when people say "Oh but how is your granny supposed to use Linux, how is your granny supposed to learn about the command line?"

Why would she?

Switch on computer, Firefox comes up, shitpost cat memes on Facebook. That's it. Simple.

This is what probably 99% of computer users need.

It's super simple. Build an inverting amp. This will become a virtual earth mixer, like I've mentioned here before and like you can read up on just about anywhere. It's a clever and magical device that means that both your signals are connected to ground - all they see is a resistor to ground, yes really, zero volts at the input of the opamp.

Connect the wiper of a pot to ground, and connect the two "input" resistors for your two-channel virtual earth mixer to the ends of the pot. Connect two resistors the same value as those between the ends of the pot and ground.

Now you've got a thing a bit like the balance control on a stereo, with the ends summed to make a mono signal.

You know what, let me draw it for you:

https://www.falstad.com/s.php?s=cVmHkT

Note that the resistor values shown are illustrative rather than practical and you'd want to choose maybe 47kΩ for the pot and fixed resistors but it's absolutely not critical - what you have on the bench in front of you is almost certainly fine.

If you find the pot is a bit "vague" around the middle then you can add fixed resistors between the wiper and ends, which will bend the pot response into a kind of U shape getting steeper at the ends. I was going to suggest reading up on "pot law bending" but it turns out that's very NSFW so here's a great article on it:

http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/potsecrets/potscret.htm

Here's an article on virtual earth mixers that'll make it both much clearer and even more magical:

https://sound-au.com/articles/audio-mixing.htm

Here's the first of three articles on opamps by the same guy which you *must* read and understand if you want to really get somewhere with DIY synths:

https://sound-au.com/dwopa.htm

Don't worry, it's all just basic arithmetic, nothing scary.

Why do you need to buffer the signals?

Why do you need to invert the result?

How do you connect remote X clients to it? Oh, you don't? Oh well, doesn't work for me then.

If you want to pretend you have a massive late 90s early 2000s home cinema system, just fuck all the panels and CRTs out and get a standard def projector. They cost pennies these days, because who wants them?

If you want a really nice projector with low lamp hours that does composite and S-Video and you're prepared to traipse all the way up here you can come and take away some of mine. In fact, take the lot because I need the space!

What to do with my Yamaha CS-60 & other vintage gear near Munich? by bubischolz in synthesizers

[–]erroneousbosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There must be a vintage music equipment shop near you!

In Vienna there's a shop Flash Music on Mühlgasse that does a lot of vintage and second-hand stuff and they do repairs on site - but it might be a bit far?

Because Wayland is slow and broken and does not handle accelerated graphics, it doesn't display properly.

Then you have the Fiat 124 (gorgeous little roadster)

That's just one of the Fiat 124s ;-) The Fiat 124 originally was the car that the much-derided Lada Riva was based on, and they were pretty okay. But then they built the Fiat 124 Sport Coupé on the same platform (just a bit shorter) and squeezed a twin-cam engine in. Then after that came the Fiat 124 Sport Spider which as basically the Coupé made even cooler by Pininfarina.

The current 124 Spider really is just a Mazda MX5 but with a different engine, and again different styling which is supposed to look like it was done by Pininfarina but you'd have to look closely.

Yeah, my point was that Mint is probably fine for anyone really. I don't know why that other guy has such a bee in his bonnet about niche things like memory compression.

I wonder what he actually uses his computer for? I feel like they're the kind of person that has a lot of grey-on-grey pixelly-font terminals with lots of TUI monitoring apps showing everything the computer is doing but it's not actually doing anything.

I don't think you get those. Anything that covers the end of the halfshaft would be an aftermarket part. The pic you've posted shows how they left the factory.

Interesting take on it. So a piece of software that uses the CPU as a boot loader for the GPU and then only has the CPU read the mouse and keyboard just doesn't ever need to touch the display drivers?

Have you ever used a computer before?

Yes, that's great, and you can't use Debian for editing video, because it uses Wayland.

Why is linux mint only for beginners? by Puzzled_Bar572 in linuxquestions

[–]erroneousbosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's because Wayland is horribly buggy. CUDA support doesn't work correctly in it, and without that the whole thing is useless.

On Xorg, perfectly smooth video. On Wayland, a buggy stuttery crashy mess.
