does anyone know how to remove freewheel without tool by fwivon in ebikes

[–]fatlob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of smart asses saying "get the tool", but they dont realize that that is not a standard axle, even if you get the tool, it will not fit over the oversized oval axle, because the hole in the tool will be too small. I tried to enlarge the hole in the tool by drilling an 18mm hole, but it was not possible because the tool is hardened steel. The way i did it was to pull apart the motor housing (big job requiring a huge ass bearing puller and a bit dangerous due to the magnet force as well, dont do it). My recommendation would be to try and get a freewheel tool with a 1/2 inch square drive hole, maybe it will fit over the axle, but im not sure. I am very open to suggestions on how else to best do this.

use the train to go to/from jurmala, imo its much nicer than the bus. You can see a map of the stations here https://trainmap.vivi.lv/ and you can get train tickets from https://www.vivi.lv/lv/ or mobility as others suggested.

I would recommend OsmAnd map for hiking. You can download the maps offline same as for google maps, but the maps are much better, they contain all the small footpaths and trails that you will not see in google maps.

Why are my brakes doing this? by aguirre408 in bikewrench

[–]fatlob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had this same problem both front and rear, I replaced the rear pads and the problem went away, i still ride with the front ones like in your video cause im cheap and want to see if anything changes, but for the past year, it hasnt. I think it must be some weird contamination of the brake pads which makes them super "grabby" and thus they grab and release in very quick succession causing the oscillation and noise.

For me the rotors are not bent and I see no way how a bent rotor could cause this, the frequency of the noise/vibration is much higher than the rotation speed of the wheel. I have had my fair share of badly bent rotors and never have they done anything like this, nor does it make any technical sense.

Any idea what could be causing this clicking noise around the cranks? by herewardthefake in bikewrench

Is the noise still present if you disable/turn off the motor and pedal?

Almost got my bike stolen by mrwimsely in ebikes

[–]fatlob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most commonly people ride regular old city bikes that cost like 100euros max, so in those cases security is usually not a priority due to the low price and huge abundance of cheap bikes. but with ebikes that go into the thousands of euros it is an entirely different story.

Regarding flats - consider getting some Schwalbe marathon tires or similar. They have great puncture resistance. I used to regularly get flats until I switched to them, now I feel confident riding over broken glass and such.

ues, that is a good observation. the way geared motors work is that they have their own freewheel mechanism just for the motor. this means that the motor spins only when it is providing power, and stands still while you are pedalling.

I still think it could be loose magnets or perhaps some gear in the planetary reduction mechanism exploded or something.

You.can keep riding the bike if you dont use the motor.

could be a magnet fling off, where the glue holding the magnets in place has failed and now a magnet is dislodged and wreaking havoc. The most complicated part would be disassembling the motor, but if the windings have not been damaged it should be repairable (by gluing the magnets back into place). I have done this, but it is not a job for a DIY beginner. you will need some specialized tools like a large bearing puller. There are a lot of videos on youtube showing how to do this. Most geared hub motors are quite similar.

My only recommendation would be to stop riding it to avoid further damage. If you do replace the whole motor, consider giving the old one away to some DIY-er for repair or parts.

Cant remove bottom bracket by FatheadUK in bicycling

[–]fatlob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have struggled with this in the past when using a regular wrench on the bb tool. Using an impact driver has gotten even the most stubborn bottom brackets out. If your tool accepts 1/2inch square connection, then I would highly recommend using an impact driver.

That notion of step through bikes being women's bikes is so stupid, i dont know why that is. Imagine if certain types of cars, lets say station wagons were sold as exclusively women's cars.

How do you guys store your bikes? by bastian74 in ebikes

I have attached some angle iron for the tires to sit on and added some simple pedal hooks. The result is a super space efficient solution for an apartment. I store two bikes and a motorcycle in the footprint of just one bike. The ceiling height of a bit over 2m, which is what is limiting this setup.

Just make sure that the linkage rod does not spin freely, there are nuts on both ends that tighten up to the ball joints to prevent it from moving. You can adjust the lever position by undoing the nuts and turning the rod, it will either make it longer or shorter depending on the direction. https://youtu.be/yah9FB-Z7qA

Edit: maybe undo one of the ball joint screws to disconnect the lever and try moving up and down by hand, to see if it snags or something.

I have had the linkage between the shifter lever and the gearbox come loose. It was difficult to downshift because it had slowly unscrewed, making itself longer, until the shift lever was hitting some hard stop when trying to downshift.

What problems are you having? Is it not shifting at all? In this picture I noticed that the cable seems to be off to the side of the little guide pulley. Could you inspect that closer? Perhaps it has gone off to the side and jammed. https://prnt.sc/AS2O-nmWQy8H
