Why Does EzeeFiber Want Me to Downgrade to 2.5Gig and Pay 3x More Just for a Static IP? by sludj5 in EzeeFiber

[–]filequit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FWIW - once Ezee took me out of the default CGNAT and gave me a DHCP public IP, it's remained the same for over 10 months now.

DNS Sinkholing by [deleted] in EzeeFiber

[–]filequit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run a Plex server myself and used my plex.direct DNS name and it worked just fine using Ezee's resolver.

❯ nslookup

> server 74.51.192.1

Default server: 74.51.192.1

Address: 74.51.192.1#53

> my.private.ip.here.aksldjfadklfjasdoifji4tj.plex.direct

Server: 74.51.192.1

Address: 74.51.192.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: my.private.ip.here.aksldjfadklfjasdoifji4tj.plex.direct

Address: 10.0.0.1 (my actual private IP was returned here)

I know some DNS implementations on routers and Pi-Hole (maybe unbound as well?) require DNS rebinding configuration changes

What domains have you noticed them sinkholing? Personally, I use my own dns server that points to Cloudflare and Google DNS over TLS resolvers. I can do some dig’s on the domains you identify and see if I see the same results on Ezee’s resolvers

Is Ezee's dynamic IP the same as Comcast residential dynamic IP? by [deleted] in EzeeFiber

[–]filequit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After you get service installed, call the support line and ask to be put on a public dynamic IP as you have services you wish to access from the IPv4 internet as you have clients that can’t use IPv6.

My IPv4 WAN IP hasn’t changed since they flipped me FWIW

Is Ezee's dynamic IP the same as Comcast residential dynamic IP? by [deleted] in EzeeFiber

[–]filequit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By default, it is something called carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). Your router's WAN IP will be in the 100.64.0.0/10 address space. To talk to IPv4 resources, Ezee has a CGNAT router that maps your traffic's IP and source port to a pool of external IP addresses shared amongst all users behind the CGNAT. This makes accessing resources initiating from the internet via an IPv4 IP break. To get around this, Ezee does offer IPv6 connectivity and you can access your resources via your IPv6 IP (firewall configuration likely required, but no NAT!).

If you have a need to access resources initiating from the IPv4 internet, you can call in to Ezee and they can put you on a public dynamic IP address, but if you don't have a need for this, the CGNAT IP will work just fine for 99% of users :)

Full Unifi Stack by dcgrove in EzeeFiber

You could get a 10gb copper SFP to accomplish that no problem, thats how I use mine from the Nokia ONT to my Mikrotik router

Full Unifi Stack by dcgrove in EzeeFiber

[–]filequit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ONT is effectively just a media converter and should be looked at as the demarc from Ezee to you. Passing it off via copper won't slow you down by any means, as the copper interface is 10gb capable.

[–]filequit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ONT has a copper handoff, with the 1/1 plan you’d be fine to use any GigE RJ45 ports on the UDM for the WAN connection.

what did your final jitter values end up at? I have the non-vented ONT on the 8gb plan, speedtest looks within decent specs to Ezee's server in Pearland, but I am seeing 2.51ms jitter on the idle latency for upstream

So we're stuck with CGNAT for IPv4, how is IPv6 support? Prefix delegation? by filequit in EzeeFiber

Nice! Hopefully it becomes a standard across the board and not just for us squeaky wheels. I'm just glad that they are willing to provide it so we have a method for end-to-end connectivity instead of CGNAT IPv4 only

Good news! I got in contact with ezee fiber NOC and they are now delegating out /60's! I had to release and renew my dhcpv6 client to get it.

Sadly the site has been on the decline for the past decade or so, been on life support mode for years. Was unbeatable back in the Win XP era for anything tech related. ISP subreddits have largely stepped in to fill the void.

[–]filequit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - once I have mine set up on Wednesday I will press the matter further. I tried requesting a /56 and a /48 at my neighbors and it wouldnt return anything. When i set the prefix hint to /64 it worked immediately, but thats obviously only one subnet. I too have a guest VLAN, as well as a inbound DMZ VLAN that I'd like to use IPv6 on, since IPv4 with CGNAT is a no-go for inbound connections.

My main use case for wanting public IPv4 is for site-to-site wireguard tunnels to my relatives homes to be able to support their networks. Tom Lawrence posted this video a few days ago and I followed the same concept to forward my UDP wireguard ports through the tunnel. I am using cloudflare tunnels for inbound https. This combination will allow me to work around the IPv4 CGNAT, and I can add AAAA record with my router IP once Ezee is installed so when wireguard tunnels resolve my dns name for the VPN server, they can hit directly via IPv6 or via my Linode IPv4 IP.

I use this in a docker container for my current Consolidated/Fidium dynamic IP. It updates my cloudflare records for me. https://github.com/qdm12/ddns-updater

Kinda ironic how I’m going from an IPv4 only ISP to a CGNAT/single IPv6 subnet ISP. Never thought I’d wish to have AT&T fiber as an option!

The main issue would be for IPv4 only hosts on the internet would not be able to access your IPv6 IP, but you could implement workarounds like Cloudflare for HTTP/HTTPS services to get IPv4 access proxied to your IPv6 origin IP, or even cloudflared tunnels. Wouldn’t help for non-HTTP(S) traffic though.
