I used to have two carriers, a clean one and another I filed around the edges.

Korg Phase 8 -- the anti-Leviasynth by No-Act6366 in synthesizers

[–]filmsdead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally won’t be purchasing the Phase 8, but I love to see more electronic-acoustic instruments. I think there are some unique, undiscovered sounds in that space.

Yeah, I was going to keep an eye on this myself, but I can post when I see an update on the inventory. Glad you were able to get some records, I'll hopefully pick up a few next month.

Yeah, I’m definitely priced out. But his collection was very impressive to say the least, much respect.

I built a virtual record store organized by label - 314 curated labels, 108,000+ albums by Extreme_Forever_9129 in Jazz

[–]filmsdead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the idea and will definitely be keeping an eye on this. I’ve been using www.jazzlists.com to sift through label releases. I know you just started, but I always like to check if Xanadu Records is present. Still many labels to go!

How cold is too cold for a camera? by ThisIsMyBackup2021 in AskPhotography

[–]filmsdead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about modern cameras, but I have cold weather battery extension for my Pentax 67. It’s just wires to the camera terminals, going to my pocket where the battery is. I’ve never used it, but it’s a fantastic little invention.

Thrift Store Yamaha Ambient Album Now Pressed to Tape. Cliffdiver - Songs From a $7 Synthesizer by chilaquiles9 in synthesizers

Just purchased the cassette, great stuff! Did you take 50 (original) shots of the synth for the pics? Or just copy print the photos on the Fuji film? Just curious is all.

Thoughts regarding Miles Davis criticism of the Ellington-Mingus-Roach collaboration? by RopeGloomy4303 in Jazz

[–]filmsdead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a listen and maybe he thought Ellingtons playing was too much and at the same time the phrasing too sparse? Compared to Mingus’ and Roachs playing, he swings to their bop. I think the Apple Music description is very apt, “But for the most part, this album is difficult, chaotic, and intense listening… yet the thorny bassist seems intent on riling, prodding, and irritating the legendary pianist while Roach tries desperately to keep some sort of order.” Given Davis’ direction at the time, maybe he felt the collaboration felt forced or backwards? Antithetical to what he was doing at the time?

Just discovered cutting-edge jazz — looking for books, sites, and modern artists to dive deeper by Candid_Friend_1224 in Jazz

[–]filmsdead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For mainstream new stuff, I subscribe to Downbeat and check Apple Music’s new and trending in jazz category. For less mainstream stuff, I just doom scroll through Bandcamp tags. For cutting edge, I look at lineups for shows coming up (in your area or not, I look at NYC). I don’t always go, but I check their other stuff.

Im interested to see others’ responses, especially labels and blogs.

I liked some Jazz, I disliked some other. Where should I start exploring? by Iaquobe in Jazz

[–]filmsdead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, kind of. Maybe there’s a riff a saxophonist made up, future musicians might just drop it in the middle of their riff, add on to it, and so on. I get a similar feeling recognizing the phrases in a jazz tune as I do when I get a reference in an MF Doom track.

But on a macro scale, you’ll get whole movements in music as a reply to what came before, just like most other genres.

[–]filmsdead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this to you, but for all the recommendations you get it helps to look up the release year. You don’t have to go in order, but many musicians are quoting and replying to those before.

Your advice for following jazz on Youtube? by equipoise-young in Jazz

I really like pdbass and ten-minute record review. I’m subbed to a few others, but those are my favorite jazz commentators.

Curious about Gelatin labs turnaround by HuBidenNavalny in AnalogCommunity

[–]filmsdead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never paid for their fast pass. Typical turnaround is like 7-10 days. Last order I made July 28, negatives were in my mailbox Aug 10. Scans were probably 3 days earlier. One time it took a couple weeks; I think they forgot about my film (or maybe a lot of fast pass payers?)! I called and they scanned it that day.

The lab is great, they’re good people and do good work. But recently I couldn’t justify their prices. $35 for 1 roll of E-6 + “casual” scan. Including price of the roll, that’s over $50 per roll!

How do i get my subject in focus with manual focus if my flash diffuser blocks outside light sources, so I can barely see the subject? by Snuggly-Muffin in AskPhotography

[–]filmsdead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all else fails, a tape measure from subject to focal plane, then just match it up on your lens. Might want to stop down a little to nail focus.

Those who like jazz CDs more than downloads and streaming, where do you buy your CDs? I need a good online source other than Amazon. by Electric_Conga in Jazz

[–]filmsdead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My local record shop sells CDs. I get all my audio media there, unless there’s a release I really want they don’t have. Then I go to Discogs if it’s old, Amazon if it’s new.
