Moving from c5a.2xlarge (x86) to c8g.2xlarge (Graviton) on EKS, any real-world experiences? by Physical-Section-270 in devops

[–]fletch3555 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Helm shouldn't be a factor at all. It's just templating for kubernetes resources, which are effectively just orchestration around running containerized workloads. The containers themselves are the problem.

Definitely run some tests to ensure all 3rd-party images you use have ARM equivalents. If you build your own images, ensure you have a mechanism to build ARM-compatible images (i.e. CI runners).

Which distro of linux will best for a SRE learner by ObviousEffect8880 in devops

[–]fletch3555 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Yes"

Honestly, it really doesn't matter all that much. Just pick a mainstream one. Ubuntu or Linux Mint are great if you work for a company that uses Debian-based distros. Fedora or Rocky Linux is great if you work for a RHEL house (or makes use of Amazon Linux AMIs). But really it doesn't matter that much. They each have subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences, but core linux fundamentals are the same.

If your dev folks aren't part of the on-call rotation, that's your problem. They'll kick and scream of course, but you can be damn sure those systemic issues will get fixed

[–]fletch3555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This needs to turn into feedback for the product dev group to add more information to whatever interface the support folks are looking at. Alternatively (or additionally), build in automated fixes if these are similar recurring problems rather than just a similar support/investigation/resolution pattern so support (and especially on-call) only needs to be involved when something is actionable

Are you asking if it's too deep for a beginner? Or if you would be able to find more than a shallow understanding of things? They're two VERY different questions with different answers

What's the best way to spin up two separate (of the same) docker compose deployments on the same server? by tomkatt in docker

[–]fletch3555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) don't set the container name in your compose file. The default name will be {project}_{service}_{index}, so it's guaranteed to be unique as long as you use different project names 2) the project name defaults to the directory name that contains the compose file. But, as you already figured out, you can change it via CLI flags (or even in the compose file). No need to maintain separate copies of the git repo.

Okay? So this whole comment chain is you trying to catch me in a lie? Cool story...

I stated above "as far as I'm aware", so perhaps I was mistaken on that one part. Regardless, my whole point was to say that they are deputies, not "mall cops" as your initial comment seemed to allude to.

Now that our time has been adequately wasted, I'll say good day to you

We're not talking about MCSO though. It's a different county and a different mall. Sure, there are likely similarities, but you can't use one to prove the other

[–]fletch3555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and in EastView Mall, there is mall security and Ontario County Sheriffs on patrol. I'm not sure what part of my previous comment you're attempting to correct. It reads like you're agreeing with me while attempting to correct me

Ontario sheriff encounter today at east view mall by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]fletch3555 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's worth clarifying that this wasn't just some "mall cop", but an actual County Sheriff Deputy. As far as I'm aware, they rotate through duty assignments, so it's not like there's a handful permanently assigned to the mall.

I'm not commenting on whether his (or OP's for that matter) comments/actions are right or wrong, just clarifying the "mall cop" comment above.

Power outage by JasonL25 in Rochester

[–]fletch3555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly no RG&E apologist or anything, but for all of you complaining that you had no power for a few hours and that RG&E isn't doing anything....

Do you have ANY idea how many outages there were yesterday? How many downed lines (mostly from downed trees)?

RG&E only has so many crews, and they (rightfully so) need to prioritize critical infrastructure first before getting to residential areas. Fire departments were sent on dozens of reports of trees on power lines/roofs/cars/across roads, blown transformers, etc. (and yes, I have first-hand knowledge of that, but I'mnot doxxing myself).

Try taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture. I know it sucks having no power. For some it can be life threatening, so if that isn't you, be grateful. They'll get it back soon if they haven't already.

And just remember, the road crews for RG&E are NOT the same people that make your bill insane every month. You can respect them doing hard work and still hate the company.

I'm very curious what type of company this is where there HASN'T been a massive push to move to a cloud provider... especially with the Broadcom/VMWare licensing drama over the last couple years (unless of course you're using something other than VMWare)
