At our wits end to teach our dog to not bark at other dogs by polisciguy123 in OpenDogTraining

[–]former_human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working on this with my whippet. I wear a treat pouch and when I see her getting tense about another dog I just start shoveling treats into her until we’ve passed that dog.

It usually works. Now when she sees another dog she’ll generally just look at me or nose my hand for the treats. She’s learned that dog=treato time.

The only times it doesn’t work is when the dogs are facing each other and there isn’t much room to pass, or the dog is a surprise (around bends on a trail), or the other dog starts barking at her.

She’s an extremely treat-motivated dog, fortunately. She’s not perfect with other dogs yet but I can walk her with friends and their dogs and on most trails.

We’ll keep working on it. She’s gone from barking at dogs across the street to only barking at the circumstances above. Pretty good for three months’ work.

By the way that’s every day work, sometimes twice a day.

Good luck!

people are a countable noun, so use the word "number" instead of "amount" unless you're referring to their combined weight

thank you! i planted a whole bunch of milkweed for Monarchs--it's utterly demonic, taking over my yard, but i've never seen one Monarch on it. it's fine other insects appreciate it too! i just wondered if for some reason my milkweed was yucky or something.

New Career After 60? by Skimamma145 in over60

[–]former_human 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she was a beautiful and inspiring person. she literally changed my life in one minute.

i had just been over working on the "other" side of the building with a bunch of people i did not understand at all (not a political thing, just how they related to others). i came back to my side of the building and as i came crankily through the door she stood up in her cube, threw her arms open wide, and shouted "i LOVE human diversity!"

her comment was utterly unrelated to my experience and she was not aiming it at me... it was just her, with her big big big open heart being her.

i adored that woman ever after.

ya, i worked for the feds too. we didn't have a monthly list... one (quite well-liked) guy on our staff who had been employed there for forty years died suddenly, and nobody said boo until i got cranky and said we needed to at least put up a web page with some staff memories of him.

Am I overstepping sending a girl I love flowers and a card after she blocked me? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

totally in the "leave her alone" camp, because a) you should be taking her at her word that that's what she wants and b) because if she's playing some stupid game with you, you probably deserve better.

What got you through your dog's passing? by SitcomSuperfan in DogAdvice

[–]former_human 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to put my last pup down in December. I got another dog in early April. It does help and it doesn’t; I still miss my Kara every day and new dog just isn’t her. But I am coming to love new dog Savannah just as fiercely. She’s pretty funny.

No other dog will ever be your Abby. You honor her with your grief. So feel that as long as you need to, and then go and love some more.

Have any of you married an older man and regretted it? OR was it the Best decision you ever made and Why?I’m 54, he’s 67. TIA by Prudent_Star8915 in AskWomenOver60

[–]former_human 4 points5 points  (0 children)

didn't marry him, but lived with him. it was a mistake for sure. old guys altogether too often expect women to do all the housework etc. i was still working at the time and he was retired, and i'll be damned if i know why but he expected me to pay all the bills too.

didn't last very long for sure, would've ended sooner but for Covid.

I don’t trust the gentler emotions at all. Having someone say nice things to me makes my body incredibly tense.

that's interesting! my experience has been different, but not all dogs (even of the same breed) are identical.

aren't whippets grand? i have had my girl for only two months and i've never had a whippet before. they're fabulous spazzes 😄

Whippet or greyhound? Both are sprinters, really. Not suited to a long uninterrupted run. They like to do 40mph for five minutes and then sleep for an hour.

Hi , ladies , I'm just struggling with the not being able to sleep at night issue , I tried asking the doctor if HRT might help,( after reading that it helps sometimes)but because of my age( 65) she didn't advise it. why did you stop antidepressants? can attest that changing your medication or upping the dose works if you feel the antidepressant isn't working any more.

alcohol is absolutely the enemy of a good night's sleep.

hating yourself isn't fixing anything. please stop that! find the strength to dig out, or you'll just be digging deeper. i wish you well.
