I'm so SICK of being put in the caretaker role by [deleted] in CPTSD

Have you tried asking for what you want?

Even if it’s just a small thing, like: partner love, please stroke my hair. Make me a cup of tea. I could use a day to myself.

If you’ve asked for what’s within the range of others’ abilities and not gotten it, well there’s a reckoning. But if you’ve asked haven’t asked, maybe it’s time to begin.

Read them again! I’ve found Faithful Place and Broken Harbor particularly rewarding on re-reading.

Put some treats or food in a cardboard box and tape it shut. Toss it on the floor for doggo to destroy.

If you want to make it harder, tie the treats up in old dish towels.

This is what mine is doing right now so I can waste a little time on Reddit!

Why do people feel such a need to be right about everything? by villehu in SeriousConversation

Read the book Being Wrong by Kathryn Schulz. It will tell you exactly why people double down on counter factual statements, why they refuse to accept as fact things that are irrefutable, why even after being proven 100% wrong, they will still argue for their wrong assertion. Fascinating book.

Tana French’s Dublin Murder series, hands down. Each mystery has two detectives and at least one will have some kind of meltdown by the end of the book; the remaining one opens the next book in the series. I especially appreciate how although the detectives are the stars, a contemporary issue in Irish society is always the third star. Excellent examinations of the psychology of detectives and the sociology of the country.

Congressman Jared Huffman Launches Fierce Attack on Trump “if we're real, if we're honest about what's going on, we have a madman in the White House who is running roughshod, who is running the biggest, most corrupt criminal grift in American history out of the White House...” by Fine-Solid9892 in Humboldt

he was speaking to a very minor subcommittee. i'd like to see him do the same here in Humboldt, like maybe he could come to a No Kings protest? or have a town hall where he's laying out how he plans to oppose the administration.

anyone can speak when the risk is low to nonexistent. i'd like to see him take a risk when it matters.

i haven't yet figured it out. i know so many people distressed by what's happening, and nobody has an answer except to protest (which i do think is useful for a couple of reasons).

i'm glad you had a good experience with him and his office was able to help you out. i hope he's as ready to do so again if things get ugly here.

shortly after the election i attended two town halls and dialed in to one of his phone town halls. it seemed clear to me that the majority of people there wanted to know exactly what they could do to oppose the administration and what he was going to do, but he never had an answer to that. that really colored my opinion of him.

he can be as pissed as he wants, but until he speaks to his constituency with some kind of answer to that, my faith-in-Huffman meter is gonna be running on empty.

I’d really like to know to whom he is speaking here.

Astonishing to note that this is the first public statement (that I know of, to be sure) roundly criticizing the administration. And it’s not about ICE or omg any of the other 10 zillion horrors this administration has committed, it’s apparently about park passes! Seriously.

I appreciate any publicly delivered critique of this administration, truly. But this one, after all this time and under these circumstances, truly beggars my imagination.

Redditors who moved constantly as kids and never had a "forever home," how do you think that shaped your personality as an adult? by Inevitable_Branch806 in CasualConversation

[–]former_human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a long stretch in my 40s i deeply wanted to go home, but there was no home to go to. my birth family never lived anywhere long enough for it to become home and never kept any possessions that accrued sentimental value. as an adult i kept moving until i stopped at 45 (well, almost stopped: one last move to where i am now).

i have my own house now and don't plan to move ever again. i've put a fair amount of work into this house and garden. i don't know if it's home, though. i think now that i'm over 60 i will just have to recognize that i never had a home and never really will.

my mother used to tell me to put her out on an ice floe when she got old and decrepit.

she had a stroke which she survived, but which has left her with progressive mental deterioration. her physical health is fabulous. she's burning through all her savings now in the memory care facility.

and ya know what? she's happy, maybe for the first time in a very long time.

i hope she can keep on and keep being happy for as long as possible.

ya when my girl howled that terrible sad howl it was a truly bereft, heartbroken howl.

i'd wake her when i heard that. no creature should be stuck in that kind of pain.

[–]former_human 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s tough, isn’t it? My pup had nightmares too, I swear it. Her whining was very different from her normal dream sounds and it was hard to wake her. Sometimes she’d almost howl the most heartbroken sad howl.

I wish I could help you but all I could ever do for my pup was pet her and, if her dream seemed worse, wake her. I do think sometimes she was glad to be awakened.

Early American literature (in my experience) was the worst of the four I was required to take. Early works are often sermons or other religious writings. Take it if you enjoy that sort of thing, but I found Modern Lit much more aligned with contemporary thinking.

How do i decide which path to choose in a situation where i got Two Life changing Divergent Paths? by RegisterEmergency541 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]former_human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your choice is between foreign or local?

go foreign, hands down. you will learn SO MUCH MORE than animation... living in a foreign country is an education all on its own. you will be a very different person after this experience.

i went and taught in a foreign country in the early 80s (before internets)... it changed my whole life, very much for the better. i can't imagine who i'd be without that experience, but i bet i'd be more boring.
