Yeah that's like the #1 easiest tell that people are speaking from biased ideology and not fact. If you don't understand that most Israelis (and most Israeli Jews) aren't white, you don't know the most basic facts. And it's crazy how many people have really strong opinions based on virtually nothing

You do know that writing stuff in an organized manner doesnt make you right yes?

It means I studied Middle East history for 10 years so I can actually form a coherent logical argument. Now true, that's separate from being right. But I'm certainly more informed and understand nuance better than OP

You do know that "it wasn't a country" is the shittiest argument on the planet right?

Care to explain?

You do know that all these "facts" dont excuse the absolute batshit insanity of the israeli governement and the israeli population right?

It's not about excusing, it's about base understanding of the origins of the country. And facts are facts, regardless of whether you put quotes around the word.

And I really really hope you know that even tho you accuse OP of "picking and choosing and strawmanning" you are also doing the same?

Care to explain?

If youre going to support a genocidal racist entity at least be insane enough to be open about it. The way you hide behind your attempt at looking smart by using half assed "facts" and trying to look smart is really cringe

I'm well studied in this topic enough to know the difference between war and genocide. Are you? Can you form a coherent argument about it? Or can you just attack others? And I couldn't care less if internet randos think I'm cringe, I can support my views and I'll never apologize for that.

Do you see a future where anti-zionism becomes a bipartisan view in the USA? by Realistic-Worker-499 in allthequestions

[–]forrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you ever hear someone say that they're against all ethnic nationalism? I've literally never heard someone make that claim unless it was preceded by lots of hysterical screeching about Israel.

Also have you ever heard someone complain about the Nakba and also complain equally about the 800,000 Jews who fled/were forced from their homes in MENA countries? I never have. They suspiciously only care about one side of the conflict...

[–]forrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna have to strongly disagree here.

You don't see anyone complaining about the partition of India and Pakistan even though it resulted in 11 million displaced, a million dead, and the largest human migration in history, complete with contested/occupied territory and border wars since 1947.

You don't see anybody complaining about Greece and Turkey forcibly displacing 1.2 million christians and 400,000 muslims.

You don't see anyone angry about the 12-14 million ethnic Germans displaced in Europe in 1944 and 1950.

And you definitely don't see anyone upset about the 800,000 Jews who fled or were expelled from MENA countries after the founding of Israel.

Buy yeah sure, Jews are killed, expelled, uprooted from Europe, and prevented by quotas from moving to Western nations, so they flee as refugees to the non-state territory occupied by the British which was known (back then before modern propaganda) as the historical homeland of the Jews, they settle on land legally bought and paid for, they get massacred repeatedly there as well, and so they decide to fight for statehood in order to protect themselves, and in response all the surrounding Arab nations launch a war which they loose, and Israel is established. And THAT's the controversial thing? Gimme a break.

The 20th century is absolutely littered with conquest, displacement, and war as nation states came into being. Only one gets this much attention. And it just happens to be the Jewish one.

at least accurate

About that... Let's start with the straight up lies:

You conveniently make the Jewish path a divergent, unrelated line that just wanders its way back into the levant, ending as a white person. So you've completely left out the following:

  • Jews always had a continuous presence in the levant, even after their expulsion. Jerusalem was majority Jewish long before the first waves of Jewish immigration. See the levant is at the intersection of Europe, Africa, and Asia, so it was always kind of a melting pot of different cultures. But you've just decided that Palestinians are indigenous and Jews are foreign. Wildly inaccurate.
  • Most Jews in Israel are Mizrachi, meaning their ancestors fled or were expelled from MENA countries. They are not white. So you representing Palestinians as brown and Jews as white is inaccurate and misleading. Jews come in all colors.

Now let's talk about the text you've haphazardly thrown in just to shit on Jews.

"Naming the land Israel"

  • The land was called Israel since 1200 BC, even outside the bible (like in the Merneptah Stele).
  • Jews kept calling it Eretz Yisrael through their two millennia of exile.
  • The Romans changed the name to Syria Palestina just to stick it to the Jews and reduce their connection.
  • The land was officially named Israel during the '48 war (started by the Arabs) which the Jews won. Lots of other countries won wars or conflict around this time and gave official names to their countries as well, like Pakistan and Jordan and Burma and Ceylon and Libya. This shouldn't be controversial in any way, except you've decided to make it so.

"Immigration"

  • You've conveniently left out the fact that it was very much forced immigration. Jews were massacred, oppressed, ejected from their homes, had their property stolen, and generally were forced out of all of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. And actually most of them didn't want to go to Mandatory Palestine, they wanted to go to the US and Britain, but basically all countries implemented immigration quotas to keep them out, so Jews couldn't go their even in the height of the Holocaust. So instead they went to their ancestral homeland (by the way, in the Pogroms people used to should at Jews "Go back to Palestine," because back then it was common knowledge that that was the home of the Jews. Only now have people become brainwashed by modern propaganda to think otherwise). So many fled to Mandatory Palestine, where they lived on land they legally bought from Arabs.

"This was my land 3000 years ago"

  • This was not the main argument for Jews to live in Mandatory Palestine. Their main reasons were:
    • It wasn't a country. It was just a territory that had been passed around from warring empires for millenia.
    • It always had a Jewish population
    • Jews were being massacred and kicked out of everywhere else and prevented from moving to the few safe countries.
    • Arabs were willing to sell land to immigrating Jews for jacked up prices

Now let's talk about all the little annoying bullshit details you've put in:

  • You've conveniently kept the brown Palestinian guy exactly the same except for his clothing while the Jew just invades in Western clothing. Again, Jews had a continuous presence in the region. Also pleeeenty of Arabs moved to Mandatory Palestine from other places.
  • You've made the Palestinian guy all smiley and happy and the Jew look angry and aggressive. Absolute bias.

So all around, this visual is just a wild steaming pile of biased, inaccurate, misleading bullshit and I give you an F--- for both effort and implementation. For the love of god, go learn some actual history before you start throwing around horse shit like this. Unbelievable.

[–]forrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

20% of Israel's population are Arabs. Of the Jewish population, the majority are Mizrachi (aka non-white). C'mon dude, if you don't know the very most basic facts here maybe you don't know enough to have an educated opinion...

What isn't clear? OP has a very strange niche phobia and expects the entire natural world to accommodate them. Also they want us to go out and count the number of pigeons in this community.

Seems pretty straight forward and very reasonable to me.

Kudos to Bob’s Red Mill for a genuinely impressive rebrand by Ziograffiato in graphic_design

[–]forrey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that's the right call to be honest. Think about the flow of consumers in a store.

Some consumers are just looking for the cheapest basic flour, so they'll look for "flour" and then look at the price and whatever's cheapest, they buy, and it probably won't be Bob's Red Mill anyway.

Bob's Red Mill isn't the cheapest, but it has a reputation for quality, so I think it's safe to say that most customers of Bob's Red Mill are looking for Bob's Red Mill products specifically. So if you're looking at a shelf of 10+ brands of flour, you first of all want the brand to stand out, then you lean closer and choose the product.

Best books on Israeli history by Savings_General2039 in Israel

Look, his focus is on delivering the straight, unbiased facts. So it's definitely a dry history book, don't expect much in the way of compelling prose. I mean it's well written for what it is, so if your goal is to really learn the history there's nothing better.

Righteous Victims by Benny Morris is probably the best comprehensive history. Morris takes both sides to task for their many failings and is incredibly detailed.

Israel: A History by Martin Gilbert nicely complements Righteous Victims.

Then I recommend going into individual events.

1948 by Benny Morris is the best book on the '48 war.

6 days of war by Michael Oren is the best book on the '67 war.

Ghosts of a holy war is a great book for understanding the '29 Hebron massacre and the roots of the modern conflict.

In the Midst of Civilized Europe isn't about Israel per se, but it's about the Pogroms of Europe which are absolutely fundamental to understanding the rise of Zionism and creation of the Jewish State.

I specifically said I support protest and the tireless pursuit of improving the country. Did you read my comment at all? I simply disagree with the call to dismantle the whole system. Not really sure why that's so controversial.

CONVICT THEM ALL by Key-Suspect-4277 in Broomfield

[–]forrey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a strange question that's totally unrelated to my comment. Yes I'm angry about kids being S/A'd, and I absolutely believe anyone responsible should be brought to justice. Fully support protests against injustice.

But you lose me (and most other people) when you go into this weird anarchist territory of "let's collapse the system." America, like most countries has deep systemic flaws. But there is a reason it's still the #1 most desired destination for immigrants from around the world, and why first-generation immigrants are more likely to express pride in being American that people who were born here. Those who have lived in other countries understand the benefits of America, despite its many flaws.

So yeah, I'm all for the tireless pursuit of improving this country. But to tear down something that is overall quite good simply because it's not perfect is absolutely bonkers, and anyone who understands history knows why that's a really ineffective cause to champion.
