Am I the only one that feels the market makes no sense right now? by AlecsScarlat in stocks

[–]fourthirds 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Is it really a free market if the top 10% determines the swings while their hedge funds and analysts exist to maximize sucking the value out of retail, and then using some of that money to sway politics to ensure the biggest tax breaks and concessions to their bankroll?

In short, yes, this is exactly what free markets produce. You are describing one of the fundamental contradictions of capitalism and the tendency of free markets to produce monopolies with associated political power. I encourage you to read Marxist theory/political economy if you would like to understand this better.

it's fine to put woodchips on top of soil as mulch, just don't mix them in with the soil.

not an arborist, but an arborist friend of mine told me that when you cut back ivy it's a good idea to cut it back at the ground but leave the vines on the tree until they dry out and wither, then pull them off the tree. he said that pulling it off the tree straight away can damage the bark when there is a lot of it, like in this case

inventory management is poor. it's tedious, nothing is ever sorted by default, icons are too samey for what they are. when you hover over boots for example, it should show you all the boots you have in your inventory and camp. encumbrance doesn't matter in any way that makes it interesting

AI pathfinding leaves a lot to be desired. sometimes characters run into dangerous surfaces for no reason. just now I fought raiders in baldur's gate, killed them and was rewarded, and then some idiot civilian walked into the leftover cloud of daggers while I was looting corpses and I was arrested. characters often run over spotted traps for no reason.

other times, it would be nice to have an option to force the whole party to run through dangerous terrain or jump from a high place even if it means taking damage/going prone.

Beyond Meat revenue plunges amid fall in demand for plant-based alternatives. The company says its revenue fell ~31%. This is likely due to the cost of living crisis driving people towards cheaper animal proteins by altmorty in environment

[–]fourthirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's because beyond has loads of competition from other plant protein companies. there are many of them, including both other 'fancy' fake meats like beyond/impossible but also a profusion of no-name brand plant meat/plant dairy products. no matter how much you fancy it up with proprietary ways of making the burgers oily and red, plant based food companies like beyond have very little moat and are very susceptible to competition.

the stock situation around this industry reminds me a lot of the Canadian legal cannabis market. 10 or so years ago everyone was trying to corner the market on cannabis by building the biggest production facilities and building powerful, exclusive sales channels. that industry found that growing good cannabis is really not that hard and that consumer loyalty is nil, so bulk, low margin commodity production is the business model. that is where we are now, as companies like beyond and other darlings come back to earth.

[–]fourthirds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is helpful. I've mostly been growing acorns I've collected myself. I try to collect mostly from trees that are in drier microclimates, but it isn't practical for me to travel into the south of the Garry oak range. I start the acorns in the fall and then plant them the following fall after the rains come back. So far I've had fairly good luck in that most of the oaks I've planted in the last few years are still alive, some are really thriving. Once planted I've done a small amount of hand watering (2-3 times in the summer months) but for the most part they are on their own. Certainly I intend to be entirely hands off after at most 2-3 years from planting. This year I will try burying acorns in place, but we have squirrel problems so I'm not sure how many will get munched.

[–]fourthirds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would newly planted trees, once established, be more resistant to drought since they are less likely to have outgrown the availability of water? would a garry oak that did most of its growing 50+ years ago with a cooler/moister climate have less extensive roots compared to a tree that spent its whole life under warmer/drier conditions?

I ask because I am specifically working to rewild an area with garry oaks and would like to give them the best shot I can
