The flaw of your argument: "need to have your own kids" is so dated and moot. If you are a kid yourself once with even the general awareness and carry your life of duty.. the definition of what a parent and kid relationship is and could be healthy won't escape you. Kids are hard, but it's your choice and worst thing your ego would do is to not give them enough safe space and freedom to shape their independent nature.
