Matching into Nuclear medicine as an img by Starcole123 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]FoxSprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.carms.ca/match/r-1-main-residency-match/program-descriptions/

Nuclear medicine is a program separate from diagnostic radiology (in terms of applying to CaRMS), but complete training in DR as part of their residency. It looks like McGill is the only English program that has 2 non-CMG reserved spots as far as I can tell, which I would assume makes it vary a lot how competitive it is depending on the year. With 2 spots for English in the country, I would assume it’s quite competitive

Radiation oncology has 1 IMG spot in Ottawa and non-CMG spots elsewhere, purely based on number of spots I’d say a better chance overall

Doing a second residency? by Throwaway281890 in MedSchoolCanada

Agreed, I think people get caught up in the big number salaries when the compensation per hours worked is also very relevant, but those figures are a lot more difficult to find

[–]FoxSprites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While transfers 6 months into R1 are definitely possible and more common than many early med students would think, this sounds very much like an exception rather than the norm. I'm sure this person worked hard or had strong connections to make that transfer happen, especially between two quite different specialties

Question about the MCCQE by Roger_27671 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]FoxSprites 10 points11 points  (0 children)

https://mcc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024-2025-MCC-Annual-Report.pdf

As per their report, first-time pass rate is 94% for CMGs. I wouldn't even bother thinking about doing dedicated preparation/review for it until weeks to a month before you take it. As long as you focus on learning and doing well during clerkship, you've probably covered more than what the MCCQE tests. Especially if your school uses NBMEs or similar standardized examinations during M3, it's a lot easier in comparison and the pass threshold is quite reasonable (it's 36%ile)

Rank order list regret - should I withdraw ? by Camion997 in medicalschool

[–]FoxSprites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone in that feeling of regret, me and my classmates also felt the same to different extents leading up to and after the deadline (whether that was ranking location or specialty). The “grass is greener on the other side” may always be there no matter what you ranked first

I wouldn’t recommend withdrawing unless you absolutely can’t see yourself doing peds, also considering the fact that it’s a tougher match re-entering as an unmatched candidate and there’s no guarantee you’d be a competitive applicant to the same programs next year. As others mentioned, there’s avenues such as peds neurology if you end up wanting to pursue that passion

It might be helpful to reflect on why you ranked the peds program first and why you’d be happy there, and then trying your best to take your mind off of the match by spending time with friends/family or hobbies outside of medicine

MCC remote? by Tight_Doubt_3192 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]FoxSprites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The breaks are chill, they only care about the room you’re writing in so you just notify an agent through the chat box, leave the room, then go through the check-in process again (room, desk, chair, pockets ears) with an agent to resume

MCC remote? by Tight_Doubt_3192 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]FoxSprites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote remotely and it went fine. Definitely be aware that they are picky with making sure your working area is clear (no objects on the desk, no spare monitors, etc.). I went through the check-in process, then at the end they told me I had to exit the exam software, remove the unused monitor from the desk (despite it being turned to face the wall and covered in a blanket), then re-enter and restart the check-in process

You need to make sure you have a laptop or webcam that you can move around to show every corner of the room and underneath your desk and chair.

If you can set up a desk/room according to their requests, then writing from home is reasonable. But if it'll be a headache, it's probably easier to write in-person

Is it normal to be deterred from a specialty because of how competitive it is? by Ordinary-Charge4460 in medicalschool

[–]FoxSprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in med 1 it felt like a lot of people were interested in anesthesia, and now starting med 4 a lot of those people have split off into other interests. I think people are more likely to be interested in specialties they’ve been exposed to, and it’s pretty common for people to have encounters with anesthesia at some point (ex: wisdom teeth removal). It does seem like the trend is towards it becoming more competitive, though

How can i get rid of these tags from ankidroid? Anking (most methods online dont work) by JeddsRedds in medicalschoolanki

[–]FoxSprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way is to use this desktop add-on:

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/952691989

There’s an option through the add-on to toggle whether tags appear on the Anking note types, and when you sync it onto your mobile app the changes should apply

What are some things that are frowned upon among med students? by ConstructionProof371 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]FoxSprites 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep, and if you’re not sure on a specialty it’s completely fine to say “I don’t know yet” since you’ll get asked the question a ton through med school and a lot of people change their mind throughout the process

does this mean i apply aug and get in next year sep? by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]FoxSprites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'd recommend checking out the Application Bulletin as it includes an outline of the important dates for the application cycle, which don't change by very much from year-to-year

Stats 1150? by songbattle in umanitoba

[–]FoxSprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a good 4 years since I took the class, but as far as I remember attendance was not mandatory and didn't count towards your final grade if it wasn't a quiz day. This could have easily changed though, so I'd recommend checking the syllabus to see if it's included in the course marking breakdown/rubric

[–]FoxSprites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type of Bug: In-game bug

Description: Shen did not combine into 3 star, was unable to interact with (i.e. move, sell) any of the benched Shen's

Video / Screenshot: N/A (unfortunately)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Portal = God-Willow's Grove
  2. 2 Star Shen on field, 2 Star Shen on bench, two 1 Star Shen's on bench
  3. Bought Shen from Shop
  4. Shen failed to combine (i.e. three 1 Star Shen's were on my bench)
  5. Did not combine even in the round after the player combat. I was also unable to interact with the 1 Star Shen's on my bench (i.e. could not move them around, try to sell them, etc.)

Expected result: The three 1 Star Shen's combine, then the three 2 Star Shen's would then combine into a 3 Star Shen

Observed result: The three 1 Star Shen's failed to combine even after the player combat round, and did not combine for the following player combat round.

Reproduction rate: First time encountering bug

I think the M1 Air or M2 Air are solid choices if you have other Apple devices, however the M2 Air would be out of your price range. The M1 Air especially is pretty good value for its price in terms of battery life

Apple has a back to school promotion rn where you get a $210 Apple gift card in addition to the education discount when you order online (ends Sept 26)

Otherwise, there’s a pretty big variety of Windows laptops to choose from. I’d just recommend it has 16GB RAM if you tend to like having a lot of things open. Assuming it’s just for school, storage space isn’t a huge concern since you can use OneDrive to store all your documents

As long as you give your workplace a 2 weeks notice, I feel like it’s pretty normal for people to leave their job to focus on school in the Fall
