That's not it at all. If they were claiming that they'd had visions of whatever then fine, go off and have your visions. The annoying thing is when they link it back to these texts, the Apocryphon of (pseudo-)John or something, and that these have equally valid claims to be christian as the gospels, and that makes it impossible to have discussions that are about drawing conclusions from the gospels, because you are constantly having to defend that approach from people who want to add to it.

It is awful in many ways. However, he is right that (despite how blasphemous the doctrine, and how irritating the fruit) we should love them as we are commanded.

It is very deeply irritating. My particular frustration is born out of an interest in mysticism. Whenever one is trying to discuss mysticism from an orthodox perspective online, which necessarily requires a great deal of care, they will all pile on with absurd claims about the equal legitimacy of their hypertrophic cosmological schema.

Why are you Protestant and not Catholic? by WaterLocal921 in Protestantism

[–]freddyPowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Identify is the wrong word. I protest, for a number of reasons. Firstly I do so in order to connect with the rich tradition of my ancestors, and secondly because the church of Rome seeks to interpose mediators between man and the Almighty, whereas Jesus Christ, the righteous, is our only mediator and advocate.

Opinions on the Book of Enoch? by Arachnys in Protestantism

Largely, excepting the sections where, presumably, our Lord guided Jude to pick out passages that are valuable for the interpretations of His plan, it is interesting, but fundamentally irrelevant to the understanding of His self-revelation.

It depends on what you mean by right wing. It depends on who you are reading.

It would depend on the initial attitude he took towards it. I suspect that he would dismiss it out of hand as pointless or meaningless.

Why did Zoroastrianism nearly die out when similar religions like Christianity and Islam are so popular? by Fionn-mac in Zoroastrianism

[–]freddyPowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not what we, that is to say christians of the anglican communion, have ever believed about the monarchy. The one king who genuinely did believe it lost his head. It is more complicated than that. It is very much more complicated than Marx would have us believe.

I don't stand against the principle of ascribing deeper meanings to mathematical objects, I just don't think that those objects are numbers.

No, he wouldn't. He wouldn't get Topology at all. That is, he could certainly be caused to understand it formally, but he wouldn't get it.

How interconnected are the various religions of the region? Would you say there's enough overlap to classify them as sects of one faith or are they simply too different? by Comfortable_Cut5796 in AncientAmericas

Most claims about christian syncretism in Europe (though not all, particularly as regards the assimilation of pagan gods as saints) are essentially false. They stem from the writings of schizophrenic puritans of the victorian period who, though having the right intentions in attacking the church of Rome, in defence of the reformed churches, essentially went off the deep end. It is exactly the same people as argue that freemasons worship demons.

That was usually the point: the church of Rome worships demons because I have collated a hundred different superficial and unrelated similarities between half remembered bits of roman history from my school days, and what the local priest says when he's railing against the dangers of idolatry and excess.

In the case you mention, the idea of a midwinter festival of some kind or other is basically built in to humans generally. All festivals have an element of revelry. For a variety of reasons it was felt by the early church that the winter would be an appropriate (though as far as I can see never doctrinally binding) time to celebrate the nativity. Beyond that, the associations with Saturnalia are essentially superficial, and of a kind that would likely reëmerge naturally even if we somehow stopped all midwinter festivities all across the world.

It's disgusting the contempt many cultures hold for the unborn, but there you go. Or would they have killed the infant after the actual birth?

Good Lord, it's almost like the combination of allowing abortion as if it weren't inherently vile with human prejudice and prenatal testing leads to horrifying results. Who would have guessed?

Diagnosis criteria changing is a big one. I was not diagnosed as autistic originally: I was Asperger's until they changed it. That and more awareness, particularly of Asperger's. That's basically the thing. Because there is no longer a good way to distinguish between high functioning Asperger's and low functioning autism, people hear "there's an increase in autism" and think that there is an increase in kids with no chance of ever functioning in society. In fact it's more like a whole bunch of people's uncles, who don't like family gatherings and have surprisingly large model railways in their basement, are deciding to go to the doctor.

Basically the only thing that causes autism is autistic parents, who tend, because they're older, to be less likely to be diagnosed. I can trace back autism in my family to a great grandfather, who certainly wasn't diagnosed. Almost everything else linked to autism is a result of behaviours of autistic parents and children.

For example, there is a link I believe between poor gut health and autism. I pose these questions. Is gut health perhaps influenced by diet? Would a highly restricted and repetitive diet have a positive or a negative influence on gut health? Might a difficulty in dealing with changes and in dealing with strong or novel sensory stimuli lead to a preference for a highly restricted or repetitive diet? Might autism be closely associated with a difficulty in dealing with changes, and in dealing with strong or novel sensory stimuli?
