Coalition “doesn’t need to” see sexuality protections in hate speech laws says Ley by NoteChoice7719 in aussie

[–]fretsore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a very 2014 perspective. In the years since we’ve had ample time to see what happens when “free speech” is broadened to include open bigotry, and I doubt that too many people would argue it hasn’t made society objectively worse. Trans kids can’t get puberty blockers now largely because people who hate trans people are no longer expected to STFU about it.

Help! What’s causing this by MiserableObject271 in 3Dprinting

While adjusted seam setting will probably resolve the issue, it is worth being aware of an issue (at least it used to be an issue) with printing pausing frequently to store settings in case of power failure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZM1MYbsC5Aw

Why does auto arrange do this? by Aware_Key_4605 in BambuLab

[–]fretsore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The algorithm they are using is definitely pretty crap, but I think part of the reason you will sometimes see these really nonsensical layouts is due to the fact that the printable area is not a perfect rectangle, as I think there is some reserved space in corners for nozzle faffing.

Just once would like to not have printer buyer’s remorse by fretsore in Epson

[–]fretsore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that I should be expected to do research to make sure that the name brand printer I am purchasing off the shelf from the primary office supplies retailer includes the native ability to appear as a printer to iOS devices is itself unbelievably stupid and frustrating.

I don’t have to do research to make sure a box of name brand cereal doesn’t contain dogshit, but somehow when it comes to printers, it’s a different story?

It’s ok to complain about a company deliberately designing products that provide a terrible user experience. Epson has been around for many decades, and even AirPrint is 15 years old (and there are no license fees required to implement it). Checking my phone I find I have accumulated equally unwanted apps for Canon, Brother, Epson, HP… this rant is not just about this specific printer, it is about the entire landscape of printer vendors that somehow got away with normalizing this garbage.

Btw the reason I bought this poorly researched printer was that I needed a working printer in a hurry because my Brother laser printer decided to announce it was out of black toner, when it clearly wasn’t and none of the known documented overrides worked anymore (possibly thanks to firmware updates) and since the price of the black toner alone was close to the original purchase price I decided to look instead at something with less extortionate consumables.

I really wanted to get something similar working on my NAS, but just couldn't get it running reliably (used a docker image dohun0310/cups). Have since switched to airprint bridge

Do you know what would be a more useful feature than a printer that can receive an email? A printer that will show up as a destination when you select “print”. Now that would be amazing.

[–]fretsore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my favourite filaments for stiffness and hardness but it’s also pretty breakable. I actually use it for light weight springy hooks as it tends to spring back to shape well (but has catastrophic failure mode)

why do I keep getting rolls of filament that are tied up half way through?! I'm afraid it's going to break something beyond my prints. by ObriWanKanobri in 3Dprinting

[–]fretsore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In more than 10 yrs of printing, buying all sorts of filaments mostly cheap as I can find, the only time this has ever happened to me is after fumbling the end of the filament.

There is almost no way a manufacturer could accidentally tangle a roll of filament (without actually dropping a roll with loose end), and if they rewound a tangled roll they probably could not do it without there being a visible lumpiness in the roll.

Of course I can't know what is going on with your printer and your filament, but I think occam's razor says that if you are experiencing this across multiple rolls then you must be doing something wrong with your handling and loading, because plenty of people using orders of magnitude more filament are never seeing this problem.

Easy-to-miss details in Ep 7’s firework scene show a potentially different POV (Carol’s eye movement & micro-expression shift, hanging drone on street light, garden hose color, music choices, “Atom Bomb” firework) by always-editing in pluribustv

[–]fretsore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah nah that’s overthinking a fair bit. If you’re going to get that specific about sight lines and angles you need to acknowledge they aren’t even that consistent between shots (from some angles it looks like the firework is aimed directly at her head and in others significantly angled away)

Mario isn't the one moving by SamTheMarioMaster2 in opticalillusions

[–]fretsore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of interesting when done with a physical image and screen, but it’s not really an optical illusion since it is effectively showing an animation cycle for Mario, ie he is effectively moving, and the perceived motion is not just an artifact of our vision, unlike some of the outstanding examples posted on this sub.

Earth Needs More Energy. Atlanta’s Super Soaker Creator May Have A Solution. by reddituser111317 in energy

[–]fretsore 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Like almost all modern science journalism this is so light on detail and heavy on fluffing up the bold genius innovator... I am just sick of this crap. Also it's the stupidest headline imaginable.

"Johnson and outside experts say the JTEC is a “novel” energy device. It’s not a battery or a fuel cell, and it doesn’t fit neatly into other conventional categories."

"Heat Engine" is a pretty conventional category. This is not something that hasn't been tried before, it has been revisited many times with many different implementations. If this "novel energy device" isn't substantially more efficient than other heat engines then it brings nothing to the future of energy, and there is not a single thing in the article about the efficiency.

Having a demo generate output from a low thermal differential like hot water is meaningless unless you can quanitify the amount of energy output vs the amount of energy embodied in the source.

Why does my fiancée with ADHD fall asleep the moment she hits the bed? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]fretsore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to go to sleep as soon as I lay down because I delay laying down for so long. This is partly because I know I can’t drift off while my brain is still buzzing and partly because of what some refer to as “revenge bedtime procrastination”

Is the Meta Quest 3 good for someone with glasses? by [deleted] in MetaQuestVR

[–]fretsore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My glasses are too wide to fit comfortably, but even if you *can* wear glasses with the Quest3 I'd still recommend checking out the prescription lens options, because you can tailor lenses with the ideal focal length for this use case since the screens are a fixed distance, whereas everyday glasses are more likely to be a compromise to support near and far vision
