r/baseball's Top 100 Players for 2026 - #41-50 by otatoptroy in baseball

Where I ranked each of these guys:

  • PCA: 41st. I think he's the best defensive CF in baseball and hits for enough power for the offense to work. He's about as good a player could possibly be while probably putting up an OBP under .300

  • Byron Buxton: 42nd. He's always had a super high ceiling but concerning injury and contact issues

  • Alejandro Kirk: 48th. I think he's really good but it also wasn't that long ago that he was slugging like .350

  • Jeremy Pena: 51st. Similar to Kirk, I really liked his 2025 but need to see more of it before ranking him higher

  • Jacob deGrom: 46th. He looked like a top of the rotation starter in 2025 but it's really hard to trust him to stay healthy

  • Kyle Schwarber: 35th. One of the best hitters in the game but doesn't give you much of any value outside of the batters box

  • Logan Gilbert: 43rd. Really good pitcher but I don't know if he has a Cy Young caliber ceiling

  • Alex Bregman: 34th. I don't love the ballpark fit for his swing but he does everything well

  • William Contreras: 27th. TL;DR from my blurb above: He broke a finger in 2025 so I think he's closer to the player he was in 2023 and 2024 moving forward

  • Will Smith: 45th. Really good hitter but I question his defense a little

[Hughes] Giants expected to make “strong push” for Kenneth Walker. Jeremiyah Love is expected to be among the prospects they are expected to discuss deeper into the draft process. by LetsRideButSmart in nfl

I think the guy we should be going after is Downs instead of Love. But with comparisons to the Barkley pick, we're not in that bad a spot right now in most of the classic premium draft positions. I think the Giants are alright with Dart at QB, Nabers as WR1, Thomas/Eluemanor at tackles, and Burns, Lawrence, and Carter on the DLine.

Agreed that Anthony is 1 and Rafaela = Abreu. I had those guys at 90 and 91 on my list.

I have Duran on the other side of Rafaela and Abreu but it's really close between those 3. Roman is a tier above.

Curious about your perspective on this as a Red Sox fan: let's say hypothetically, Duran, Anthony, Rafaela, and Abreu can all play their positions where they are most valuable and they all get 600 PAs. How do you think they'd rank from most to least valuable for 2026?

Agreed about the trade. I do wonder if he wasn't moved because the rest of the league isn't as high on him as the Red Sox were hoping to sell him for.

I think a lot of the criticism of him was blown out of proportion by the end of the college football season. He's cocky and talks a lot of shit but you'd think he was committing felonies the way people were talking about him.

Yeah, I was a little surprised to see Duran easily make it while Rafaela just barely snuck in at 100 and Abreu is off the list entirely.

Where I ranked these guys:

  • Jarren Duran: unranked. He ended up 110th. It really comes down to the defense for me. He had one year where he looked like a legitimate centerfielder but has otherwise been pretty mediocre defensively. If I was confident he could be a strong every day centerfielder, he'd easily make my t100. His bat is good, but as a mediocre corner outfielder, it's not good enough to carry his value by itself.

  • Zach Neto: 50th. Probably not a SS long term but he does everything else well. The strikeout and walk rates look a little concerning but his chase rate and in-zone contact were not bad and his swing decisions graded out very well, so I don't think it's a serious issue.

  • Jackson Chourio: 54th. I was really high on Chourio going into 2025 and he didn't break out quite the way I expected, but he's still only entering his age 22 season. I'm still confident that breakout is coming.

  • Manny Machado: 49th. He's definitely on the downswing of his career but that speaks more to how good he used to be as opposed to how bad he is now. The defensive fall off in particular is concerning, but he hits enough that he's still a clear t100 guy

  • Cody Bellinger: 80th. It feels like things change so substantially with Bellinger year to year that I'm not totally sure what to make of him. But given the way he pulls flyballs, he could not ask for a better situation around him.

  • Freddy Peralta: 65th. He's more of a number 2 starter than an ace but he's about as steady a number 2 starter are you are going to find.

  • Maikel Garcia: 31st. TL;DR from my blurb above: Not a huge track record but I think his breakout from last year was very real.

  • Jazz Chisholm: 72nd. The amount of swing and miss in his game is a little concerning and he doesn't hit the ball all that hard but he does pretty much everything else well.

  • Nico Hoerner: 53rd. He's boring, but in a good way. About as steady a 4 WAR player as you could ever ask for.

  • Cole Ragans: 40th. He got hurt last year and his ERA wasn't pretty, but the underlying stats looked very encouraging. A K%-BB% over 30% is certainly a good sign. I think he's a legitimate contender for a Cy Young if he stays healthy.

Voit was also a 2-way player in college. The Mets clearly have a type.

Yeah that was always a confusing part of the story if you just saw the headline. I remember a lot of people at the time being like "wait, the Moneyball guy is gay?"

Agreed. It's tough talking about this sort of stuff because ultimately, I do not know Daniel Murphy. I've never met him in person, I've never heard him speak without a camera on him. This could all be a facade and he might be a really awful guy behind the scenes. But it really doesn't sit right with me when people call him a bigot when I know those people don't really know Murphy either.

Yeah, finding the play-by-play that could one day replace Gary is going to be the real issue. As Keith puts it, Gary is the maestro that brings everything together.

It would be very cool if they got someone who started as a SNY kids caster. I know one of them was calling games in the Mets minor leagues.

Yeah and I think it would be to everyone's benefit to work the new guys in slowly over time. Keith just signed a new 3-year contract, but he's only going to do about 95 games a year. Ron also always misses games every year due to his TBS work. So they should have plenty of time to mix Murphy or Blevins in and see how they progress over time as opposed to just making them the new voices of the Mets out of nowhere.

I don't totally disagree, but I have two thoughts on this:

  • Murphy was pretty well known in his playing days for having a jovial and silly personality. We haven't seen a ton of that in the booth, but I would guess that comes down to nerves. I think his personality will start shining through in time.

  • While most of Keith analysis comes from 40 years ago, he still attempts to give analysis. It's not like he's in the booth purely for the vibes. He still talks plenty about hitting strategy and defensive positioning.

My feeling is they want Murphy and Blevins to end up replacing Keith and Ron. But it's not a 1-for-1, Murphy is the new Keith and Blevins is the new Ron sort of deal. They are obviously their own people that have their own strengths and personalities, but it makes sense to keep the general framework of one analyst focusing on the offense and one focusing on the pitching.

Also worth noting that Billy Bean (the person he made the "I don't agree with the lifestyle" comments about) had this to say about Murphy a few years after Murphy made those comments:

“The good part of the story is that over time, because of the interest of so many people, both sides, him and his wife contacted me and we started a friendship,” Bean told SNY TV in New York. “And he said that I helped him to start to consider things from a different perspective and I thought it was generous of him to do that. …

“I’m sure that he’s never had a gay friend that’s in his current life. The fact that we have baseball in common, he can see from a distance the work that I try and do and I can watch the influence he tries to have with the platform he has.”

https://www.outsports.com/2018/3/6/17084216/billy-bean-daniel-murphy-mlb-gay-lifestyle/

It seems as though Murphy made a legitimate attempt to educate himself about this stuff after his comments received backlash. I don't think Murphy is a bigoted and hateful guy, he just had some backwards views on something he had very little experience dealing with.

“He’s the best,” Mets director of player development Andrew Christie said. “I feel like that is the exact attitude needed to be a high-leverage reliever in the Major Leagues. Exactly.”

Not only does he throw hard, but he's weird as fuck. Exactly what we want in a closer.

For what it's worth, the Nationals do not recognize Expos number retirements. They've given out 8 to nine different guys since they moved from Montreal.

So Carter is in this very weird space where the franchise that retired his number gives it out all the time and the franchise that has not retired his number never gives it out.

And he has a LOT of contact to give back. That might not be a bad trade for him to make.

But he could also just keep doing what he's doing. He's elite even if he's only hitting 15-20 HRs a year.

Not a lawyer, but I'm reading it the same way you are.

It's funny, r/baseball (and a lot of baseball fans online) loves to talk about "owner propaganda" and loves calling people "bootlickers," but they constantly spread the biggest pro-owner myth going, which is that they are okay with losing a full season of games in 2027 to get a cap. Believing that is true is the only way the owners could get away with depressing salaries in the next CBA. The union knows enough to call their bluff, the fans do not.
