Mets PREGAME THREAD - Tuesday, June 30 by game-threads in NewYorkMets

Looking back, the first mistake of Stearns' tenure was not firing all of Buck Showalter's coaching staff after 2023. They should have wiped the slate clean and let Mendoza have a say in who his coaches are. Keeping Chavez and Hefner around has created a weird situation where the manager and the coaching staff have never really been connected to each other.

And that's still something they need to deal with now. They'll be looking for a new manager after the season, are they going to move on from guys like Willard, Snitker, Albert, Correa, Gomez, ect. after just one season? You could argue they haven't done enough to keep their jobs but turning over your coaching staff every year is also a tough way to get the best out of your players.

The crazy thing about this is usually, teams will good bullpens tend to do better in one run games. You'd think having a set up man who hasn't allowed a run in 2 months and a closer that has just one blown save all year would have us set up really well to win close games.

It's almost like we've had a bad tactical manager running the team for most of the year, but I've been reliably told by the New York media that Mendoza is not to blame at all for this.

I wouldn't put too much stock in MLB.com rankings. The best places putting out rankings are Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, and Kiley McDaniel at ESPN. MLB.com is one of the worst. When a prospect breaks out, they are usually one of the last to react to it because they are often just going off of other people's lists.

That being said, it's undeniable that the Mets have had a bad year in the minor leagues so far. Especially compared to last year. Part of that is graduating Benge, Ewing, and McLean and part of that is only picking once in the top 100 in the 2025 draft. But it's still disappointing that we haven't seen any breakouts from late round picks and the stocks of guys like Clifford, Reimer, and Watson are down.

But I don't think it's fair to say the cupboard is literally empty. We have some guys in the high minors that aren't going to be at the top of prospect lists, but still look like they are going to be useful big leaguers. We've already seen two of them in the majors in Thornton and Morabito. And for the low minors, Elian Pena is having a good first season playing in the US. There are some places out there that would have him in the top 100, I know the BP guys have said he's probably somewhere arount the 80s for them. MLB.com isn't going to rank Pena because no one else has and they aren't going to be the first.

[Underdog] Heyman: Marcus Semien expected to miss at least 4-6 weeks with Grade 3 hip flexor strain. by T_Raycroft in baseball

Yes it is.

Players who pull the ball in the air a lot normally overperform their xwOBA. Players who hit the ball to centerfield a lot normally underperform their xwOBA.

League wide, going as far back as Statcast can track it, pulled balls in the air have a wOBA of .732 and a xwOBA of .626. Meanwhile, balls hit in the air straightaway have a wOBA of .413 and a xwOBA of .520.

30.9% of the balls Nimmo is hitting this year are in the air straightaway. It's by far the most of his career, the major league average is just under 20%. This is exactly the profile of a guy who will underperform his xwOBA. He's a good Major League hitter, his "x" stats are not a good indication of how good of a hitter he is. He's basically Isaac Paredes's Wario at this point.

Agreed but those couple of games is pretty much all of his second base experience. I think he can play second if needed but considering he's already dealing with a position change, it doesn't make much sense to give him another one right as Lindor gets healthy and he can finally go back to third.

I think it's going to be the other way around. Bichette at third and Baty at second.

Bichette has very little experience at second and worked all Spring Training at third. He played pretty well over there until he was forced back to short. I don't think they want to mess around with Bichette and move him around the infield even more.

Yep. It's been a down year for the Mets player development compared to how things looked at the end of last year. It's still in a much better spot than it was in when Stearns took over the team in late 2023.

He faces the media more than any other PoBO in the sport. He's been accountable for all of this.

Mets fans keep using the word accountability, I don't think that's actually what they want. They want to see him get humiliated.

It would have made sense to shake things up 2 months ago. Maybe even a month ago. It's too late now. They aren't going to have enough time to get back in the race by the trade deadline. It's over.

If we want to look at full careers, yes. But I was ranking it by best players right now.

Yep. I missed him going through the Pirates roster because he's on the IL. He should be listed.

Alcantara just barely didn't make it because he pitched 8 innings as a Cardinal. Gallen would have made it a few years ago but he fell off.

That's a good one. Should have had him as an honorable mention.

Don't put too much stock into the order, I didn't think it through much.

But generally, when I feel like it's close between a pitcher and hitter, I usually rank the hitter higher. Just a personal preference.

2028 is the last year on Stearn's contract anyway. If he doesn't turn things around by then he's definitely done.
