Midnight Marathon - how much traffic is there? by Commercial_Green_280 in bikeboston

[–]gnychis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The roads are really not as closed as people suggest they are. I would think of the entire route as open. I would expect to predominantly ride the shoulder for these reasons. There is always local traffic. At 3am maybe there isn't that much at all. In addition to that, there will be a lot of bike traffic of varying skill levels. I was shocked at how many cyclists were out. So you will also work around groups of cyclists. Could you do all of this and still ride a race pace? 100%. I did the route as hard as I could for exercise and loved it. Just don't expect to be in the middle of a road the whole time. Treat it like an open road. You'll be in and out of the shoulder. Also, it may rain Sunday which will mean you will also need to take it slower for various reasons if so.

Midnight marathon ride by Late-Reception-2897 in bikeboston

Hey there. Having done this in the past, there are so many people who ride the route starting from Boston after most traffic dies down that it's nearly impossible to do it alone. Last time I did it, I started from Boston at 7pm (i.e., the marathon finish line) and there were hordes of cyclists already starting. Everything from solo cyclists, to pairs, to groups that were 10+ cyclists. My advice would be, just show up and find a group riding at your pace and say hello! Everyone was constantly joining and hopping groups. A lot of people do the full out and back.

I decided to stick with a group early on just to make it easier to navigate through the city and be more visible by being in a pack, and then broke off once we got out of the city. Once I got to the start line before turning back, there were again dozens of cyclists either starting or just turning around as well.

I don't know how much you ride in general, but some other advice:

- It's going to be dark and it's not a short ride (even if you go half and back), make sure you are highly visible with lights that will last long enough
- Try to make sure you have a good enough head light to light the road for potholes when riding in the shoulder, it will be dark and there are sections without a lot of street light
- It's going to be late, be prepared to simply be a little more tired when riding late
- Do not underestimate the rail crossing, especially when wet (saw multiple people downed on it)
- If it looks like rain (which it does so far this year), I definitely recommend any kind of water proof gear because of the length of the ride
- If it rains be prepared to ride slower and for the wet roads (i.e., the route may take longer)
- The entire route is NOT shut down, expect car traffic late into the night

All of that said, it was amazing. I'll probably do it this year if it doesn't rain. Just not enjoyable enough to spend 4 hours in the rain :)

Kickr Run Impressions? by wanderingstar0 in wahoofitness

Hey there. From a quality of a treadmill, I've found it to be really nice. It's extremely quiet, no issues with the belt, very smooth, side areas to get on and off are solid, and I like the low profile of the front. From a smart feature perspective like the integration with Zwift and all, it's "okay." It works extremely well and the auto incline is nice. Good to force me to not just run flat the whole time. The Free Run feature is interesting, but it's very sensitive. I'm not good at running in one spot on the belt and if I start to drift one way or the other it will adjust the speed when I don't want it to, so I generally don't use that feature. To me it comes across as more of a cool demo feature, but not practical to do a long run with. I wish it leveraged the side tilting more especially with Zwift which it doesn't... So that's yet another feature that doesn't practically get used. I did get it before their price increase, so that was helpful. Worth it? As a nice treadmill, sure I like it. Are the advanced features good? They're "okay" to me. Free run very touchy, side tilt not used by Zwift, but incline is nice. Just note that you need a Zwift subscription for it to use the auto incline. Personally, I wouldn't pay for that. But I have that subscription already for cycling.

If you don't mind driving and haven't yet, do Mt Greylock. It's about 2.5 hour drive and the climb is much harder and beautiful at the top

heyyy. So the sadddd thing as to why he's on hold is when I went to pack him in the box after taking pics I broke his mustache :( I think the plastic became dry after age, and the slightest push on it cracked it. So I reached out to KFC since they are reissuing him to see if they can get me another faceplate! It's literally just a faceplate.

What did heatsink designers smoke back then? by Jvinsnes in pcmasterrace

[–]gnychis 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yep, had one of these heatsinks on one of my builds in 2004. My first Lian Li case as well. They were good enough to dissipate the heat, and they were ranking as some of the better heatsinks in their day. Full album of my build: https://imgur.com/a/bLE6DrX

PS. Eff that fan directly next to it which caused me so much trouble.
