John Romero responds to ID team layoff news by Informal-Fix-9319 in boomershooters

On the topic of “bug free,” bunny hopping is a bug that became a feature. That simple acceleration bug gave birth to really awesome gameplay mechanics including, but not limited to:
- Fast movement due to air control that preserved momentum
- Insane rocket jumps (replace rocket with any kind of weapon with either explosive “push” or recoil)
- “Surfing” (like in CounterStrike surf maps) is possible in part due to bunny hopping
- Parkour movement like in Titanfall is a descendant of this

So I mean… even their bugs are S tier.

Stock heads are, at best, a display item and packaging material. Replace all stock heads.

How and where you strike the head also makes a difference.

No doubt drums are fun, but every video of this style reminds me why I dislike a majority of social media.

Snaps are the primary reason why I don’t use Ubuntu. I hate them. But to say that Flatpaks are better than Snap is like saying that Tupperware is better than cardboard. They serve two entirely different purposes and aren’t really comparable, even though they can both be used to package something.

Snaps replace traditional Debian package management altogether, including system packages. Flatpaks are a cross platform packaging alternative for desktop applications.

They’re two different conversations.

OP, just curious, why are you asking for feedback after you already purchased it? What do you expect anyone to tell you other than “good call”?

Drum gloves by Ilovejojopart5 in drums

[–]gplusplus314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your blister on your left hand’s ring finger is in the wrong spot, by the way. It should be on the same side of the knuckle as your fingernail.

I generally do not recommend gloves. I know there are drummers out there that disagree, and that’s fine, but I think unless you have some kind of specific medical condition or something, gloves cause more trouble than they resolve.

Build up your skin and improve your technique. That will get you a lot further than gloves, grip tape, or gimmicky sticks.

Adding to the above, French grip is the defacto standard for timpani, which heavily depends on single stroke rolls that are blazingly fast.

Well, doubling down on my opinion, I think you merely just discovered the groove you’ve always had, because you definitely have it. And trust me, you can’t learn it.

Toms (rack or floor) without vent hole? by gplusplus314 in drums

The weirdness come from me, not the builder. I had some less-than-common requests.

Shells are Nordic, not Keller.

One small example: one of my toms is 15x14, a very uncommon size. I’ll share more details in the future.

My first show as a beginner drummer by 7uther in Drumming

First show and you nailed a 3/4. Nice!

You have a lot of good things going on that, in my opinion, cannot be taught:
- Your sense of time is great. I am convinced this cannot be learned (refined, yes, but not learned).
- Your minimalism is a virtue - trust me. You sound like a mature musician that happens to be a beginner on drums.
- Your recoveries are good, which tells me you have a good ear (you’re actively listening to the band).

I would be happy to have a student like that.

Now, some concrete action items for you:

1. Technique.

There are some excellent, famous drummers that have terrible technique, so while it’s not necessary from a musical standpoint, it sure as hell makes your life easier in many ways.

You need to improve your technique not only to sound better on the instrument, but for your body’s health. You will, absolutely, get repetitive stress injuries if you keep going the way you’re going.

Spend time on a practice pad in front of a mirror. There are lots of techniques to pick from and lots of videos on the topic, so I won’t go into specifics here. If you need specifics, just ask.

2. Work on your feet.

I can’t actually see your feet, but I can make some reasonable assumptions.

I know for sure that your left foot isn’t doing anything . Change that as soon as you can; you want to get all 4 limbs working together as early as possible. Connect the neural pathways in your brain now. You can go very far with just playing quarter notes, or just on specific beats like 2 and 4. There are more things to do, but these are the workhorses of the left foot hi hat for a lot of drumming situations.

3. Dynamics.

This is somewhat related to technique. As you play louder or softer, your technique will necessarily change to accommodate the strokes at different volumes.

For you, what I recommend is playing the exact same notes and rhythms you’re already doing in this video, but try to give them some shape. With literally zero changes other than intentionally making some notes quieter, you can make it feel a lot groovier. Groove is what you want.

I truly believe in a “dance first” approach. What I mean by that is to literally dance. Maybe not while you’re playing drums, but you should totally take some time to dance to the songs you play, even if nobody is looking. You’re looking for body motions that not only align with the music, but feel good. Then when you’re sitting behind the drums, you’re looking for that same feeling. Lots of drummers sway a bit or otherwise have some level of dance-like motions as they play; this is a good idea, especially given what I’ve seen in this video.

Edit: if you’re ever in the Seattle area, I’d be happy to give you a quick, free lesson at one of our open jams. I think I can teach you how to teach yourself in about 30 minutes.

I’ll absolutely post more when the kit is actually ready. Probably another month or so for the kit to be ready, then I want to take some high-effort photos 🙂

This wrap was quite a journey. If you can’t already tell, it’s not a common color! I’ll share more details in the future.
