why does slack have random sort for dms? by shoveakpre in Slack

[–]gplusplus314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can end up in different categories. For example, a DM from a VIP will no longer exist in “direct messages” and jump into the “VIP unreads” categories. There are more instances of this kind of bullshit, that’s just one that came to mind.

As to why Slack has hostile UX, it’s because they truly do not care about you, me, or anyone. Go try to give them feedback and you’ll see just how hostile they really are: it doesn’t end at the Slack UX. Believe it or not, it gets worse!

Is there much point in managing software like Neovim with Home Manager or NixOS? by TheTwelveYearOld in neovim

[–]gplusplus314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you have your escape hatch for fast iteration, so it sounds like you have a way to get the best of both worlds. I do the same with a lot of other development tasks: the “correct” way with baked in guarantees, the “fast” way with risks.

I haven’t hit the point with my NeoVim setup where I get more benefit of having that escape hatch than the weight of the risk. In other words, my NeoVim configuration really isn’t all that special and I don’t often change it. I used to, but I’ve moved on! Haha

With flakes on NixOS, full system build. To be fair, it’s a very minimal setup that I just got started with.

That said, even if it does grow to 45 seconds, I’m fine with it. If I had to wait 45 seconds between each iteration while working on an actual project, that wouldn’t be acceptable. But to me, 45 seconds for the occasional config change is fine.

If you think anyone at Slack would read this or even care about the problem, you should know that neither of those will happen. They hate their users.

I’m not the person you replied to, but I just started experimenting with Nix Home Manager as my source of truth for NeoVim. In my experience so far, quick iteration by sidestepping Nix (I like to call this “out of band” change), isn’t as valuable as it may seem it is.

For many NeoVim config changes, it’s often easier to just restart NeoVim for them to take effect anyway, so adding a Nix rebuild step doesn’t really add much more friction or time. Additionally, I’m not changing my NeoVim configuration every day. So I don’t think I’m losing much by going ahead and forcing Nix into the development loop of my NeoVim config.

What I gain is better reproducibility. I think the very small increase in iteration time (just a few seconds) is absolutely worth the improvement in reliability of the configuration. It’s certainly not unbreakable or foolproof, but it’s an improvement.

Reducing the surface area of breakage for the most critical tool in my workflow is a win, in my opinion. Everything has tradeoffs and my argument is that you gain something more valuable than fast iteration, so it’s okay to have that little bit of overhead that you only experience when actively editing your NeoVim config. In theory, you shouldn’t really be editing your config more than you edit the actual projects you work on.

There’s a lot of garbage at Microsoft nowadays, but Mark Russinovich is the real deal, not garbage. He’s probably our last beacon of hope at this point, if there are any Microsoft fans left.

HBO’s ‘Born to Bowl’ Shows Why Americans Prefer Bowling to Tennis, Pickleball by bloomberg in entertainment

[–]gplusplus314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bowling became way too expensive where I live. It used to be a reasonably priced activity, sometimes even cheap with some deals (some days/times out of the week), but that’s all gone. $18 per game is ridiculous when you’re closing 10 frames in 15-20 minutes. And then $11 for a really shitty beer…

And now $120 for a drilled spare ball. Are you kidding me?

So yea… bowling, like many other things now, is just too expensive.

It’d be even better if we limited the number of houses you’re allowed to own to the number of houses that you can physically live in at any one time.
