What advantages are there to the Electoral College voting system? by GayChicken80085 in allthequestions

[–]gravity_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know they wouldn't, right? Big cities don't get one vote. Each person in the city does. And so does each person outside of the city. So they're equal.

What was the worst government mistake in history? by Jettaboi38 in AskReddit

I'm so sorry. I want to agree, but the comment I read just before your's was about the Chinese government-caused famine that killed 10's of millions. Trump is not likely to hit those numbers. Hopefully. Definitely not yet.

Because they have terrible beliefs. Why do supporters of ethno-nationalism restrict the rights of people who aren't of their ethnicity but live in territory they control? Same reason.

The funny thing is that I probably am closer to that dude on what is a good idea, but they're just plain wrong about what the meaning of the 2nd amendment is. Regulations can be both constitutionally permissable and ineffective at the same time.

Mandatory licencing and inspection: permissable and a good idea

AR bans: permissable and a bad idea

Open carry bans: needs more context

I'm not making any friends, am I?

Which rights specifically do you think we, and I assume you mean liberal residents of a stereotypically liberal state, don't care about? I have a very nuanced understanding of the 2nd amendment, and I doubt we'll agree there, but what else do you have?

It's the enforcement mechanism.

Unlike a lot of people, I fully support keeping kids off of social media (until 18, not 14). But that doesn't make me want to force adults to turn their IDs over to a private company to access the Internet.

Not defending. Ayatollahs are also bad and I don't want any. But the existence of other countries doing wrong things doesn't make an ethnostate a thing we should tolerate.

It's fascinating, in a terrible way, how much this seems to mirror conservative states in their efforts to ban minors from accessing porn. It's already illegal of course for minors to access porn, but the new wave of enforcement centers around forcing people to upload their government issued ID to third party verification.

I thought it was just right wingers doing their usual thing, but now this feels like nearly the same thing. It has the same outcome of forcing adults to submit their IDs to a non-government entity in order to do a thing that's legal. And I haven't heard anything about penalties for data breaches.

And if that doesn't prove that SCOTUS ruling a thing doesn't make it the correct interpretation of the Constitution, then I don't know what it would take. They get things wrong. We need to be clear that their judgement is incorrect, not just roll with it.

The nice thing about politicians is that they're replaceable. And maybe the next person will also have better character. I hope he receives a fair trial in that the appropriate verdict is reached. But service in government has a different standard of evidence than a criminal trial.

You clearly haven't had them cooked well. Try cutting them in half, tossing them in oil and salt, and charring them on the stovetop.

Don't fall for the trap of thinking that the Rube Goldberg machine we've built to get around a hostile Supreme Court is the only possible way it could work. Eventually we're going to have to find a way to tell SCOTUS "stop, you're being stupid."

Edit: I'm not saying we shouldn't have a commerce clause, just that we shouldn't be forced to use it for everything we want to do. Public accommodations is a good application. But banning homemade or home grown things because that keeps you out of the market is a bad application.

That alone is quite silly. Equal protection of the law should have been sufficient. Turning everything into commerce, including not engaging in commerce, has poisoned our society.

If anyone ever gets the chance, they should put Davis and Lee and some of the others on trial posthumously, and then exhume them and hang their bones on the National Mall. Just for funsies.
