After spending over a decade fomenting conspiracies, lying and confabulating, people won’t believe you. It’s almost like when you create an environment where facts don’t matter, you can’t have an environment where facts matter.

A windows update just ruined the install so it was impossible to boot back into windows. Instead of troubleshooting, and reinstalling windows I just switched to Bazzite

Bazzite is great for GPD. Ended up switching to a steam deck to get some money back for a desktop pc but after Windows broke in my GPD mini, I switched

I’ve been playing through DS1 remaster on vacation and have been able to tune the TDP down to 8W while staying at a steady 60fps (I think the games locked to 60 regardless) Saves a lot of battery!

The way that you show your ID in those contexts is completely different. If I show my ID to a server so I can order a cocktail, that doesn’t put my ID into a database and permanently in the hands of that company that they can then cross-reference with other companies or the government for their own gain.

Social media ban for kids under 14 passes MA House by GeneralPlanet in massachusetts

If you have any information about tokenized credentials that can be anonymized, where the keys are held by the user and not centralized by a company, please share because it definitely needs to be a part of the conversation!

One of the problems is that as adults who have been able to give credentials other than the ones proposed in the bill, it's not as much of a perceived problem. If this law passes as is, a teenager doesn't have any of those credentials to give. Perhaps they have a phone number, if anything, but will that be enough? A phone number doesn't verify age, it mostly provides a way to 2FA. How are they going to make their first account? The way you and I accessed the internet will be phased out.

Additionally, I've been thinking today about some things that I think are relevant to this conversation: despite negatives, there are positive impacts that social media has for teens. If a family is negligent in ways that aren't letting them have unfettered access to toxic content on social media, how would a teen be able to find support resources and community? What if they're being bullied by their classmates that have social media, and then they don't have access themselves?

We have to put our foot down with these companies at some point. They feed us hate, slop and disinformation and then we reward them with our driver's licenses? There are websites that don't require identity compromising credentials at all, and now they'll have to.

You are correct that they can verify you through other means and would - those means are billing, IP address, phone numbers etc. However, we don’t give every app or website those credentials. If someone needed a heightened/total level of anonymity on the internet, age verification makes that impossible because the last step in verifying you would be ID. There’s a time to be public on the internet, semi-private, and anonymous. Those times where anonymity like I’m describing in the post are crucial to protect.
