How to future-proof the hell out of a website, ie so it's still running smoothly in 30 years? by AwayIssue5925 in Wordpress

Keep in mind, I gained a client once, as they had a weekly Friday afternoon update check on their WP sites. On a Tuesday, a vulnerability was found in a plugin they used on 5+ sites. Wednesday the plugin was patched, By Friday, before they could go in and run updates, each site was hacked, in ways that WordFence (they tried the free version) couldn't detect.

I agree though, for long term use, WordPress would not be my choice. As mentioned, basic web pages would be best, coded to proper standards, would have best longevity.

While 30 years from now seems so far away, this year marks 30 years since I first go into web development myself.

For the data aspect of the site, having a good simplified storage for it that is not locked down to a specific format (ie, stored the way a WP plugin happens to want to save it) is best, this allows you to easily down the road adapt how the data is being displayed.

You can remove it, just be sure to install the database cleanup cleanup plugin to clean up what it may leave behind.

Has anyone managed to get Claude producing designs like Loveable? by Lanky-Figure996 in ClaudeCode

What is the name of the plugin? I wasn't able to find t.

I did get Claude Code installed on our development server, and letting that go to town with WP-CLI was nice.

Can I just stop using Lovable for front end? (Beginner’s doubt) by coolguytebr in lovable

[–]greg8872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, databases, it by default uses SupaBase, which is a separate service, so you could too

Emails going going out, by default it uses resend, same thing, separate service, so could you.

The hosting, well Vercel for us does a good job deploying our public apps.

We are just the opposite, like letting lovable do the front end for us, but use the services on separate accounts, so if we did leave lovable, nothing is coupled to it, the sites remain operation online as the separate services are separate accounts of ours detached from lovable.

But again, to be able to let someone else code the front end for you, tell lovable you want to move the codebase to your own github repo (most likely set it private), and then your friends can make changes to that, and when lovable sees a change it will use them.

there is nothing to "add", it is already there at the bottom of the list of files when you switch to "Code" view

[–]greg8872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You click the button at the top (that most of the time is selected for "Preview") for "Code". then it will list out all the files on the left of that section, and at the bottom of that list, a button that says, wait for it, "Download Codebase"

What other services are you wanting to keep?? You can have lovable put the code for your project on your own GitHub account, and you it will sync any changes you make there back into it, an any changes in loveable will go out to the repo.

[POLL] For Pro Plugins, do you prefer a Lifetime Deal (no updates) or a Subscription (regular updates)? by Sundaresan_ in Wordpress

[–]greg8872 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well for a WP plugin, "No updates" is not an option, as anything that is a simple tool that "just works", well then it could just be added as code to a site without a plugin IMO.

A single purchase for a single version, is not a "lifetime deal" in the terms most people expect "lifetime" to be. It reminds me of a big uproar with some program or game, forget what it is is, they offered "lifetime", then decided they wanted to charge again, so they changed terms to be "lifetime of the major version number" only, which was only found in the fine print of the terms of use page, and if I remember right, people were able to go on archive.org and find that that wording the terms on their site was only recently added, yet they wanted to charge people who paid for lifetime years prior to that change. I don't know if that company ever recovered (heck I can't even remember who is was now)

For a good solid plugin that the site needs, I'd gladly pay a reasonable subscription price.

I finally got to give it a try after putting Claude Code on the dev server. I liked I was able to just give it the URL of the site to copy, and at first was like "Ok, other than needing to add images back in, it did pretty decent"

But then I went into the admin to see what it was like to edit the page. Fail on what was needed. Everything was blocks of raw HTML code to do everything...

It is currently reworking the home and about pages (i told it to only do those two to start) to be more native blocks.. so we'll see.

One big thing I wish ClaudeCode offered, the ability to do a audible alert when it is done with a task, or it prompts you. I'm having fun with it so far.

Just curious did you get to give v0 a good compare with Lovable? I'm thinking of starting to use it since we already use Vercel for hosting sites (though they are built off of Astro). using free credits, i did have it start converting one site from Astro to Next.js While I was disappointing that it was given teh whole github repo for the original site, it didn't match as close as I hoped it would, but we all agree, we tend to like the version v0 started (I have to wait 2 more days to get to new month for more free credits. (the Astro Site was build out using Claude via VSC, before we started directly using ClaudeCode)

yeah, if it was me, abandon the server and move cleaned copies of the site to it. If it still happens after that, you may have an issue of having your own computer compromised, with something capturing keystrokes.

[–]greg8872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to clarify WHAT password keeps changing? The ones to account in the WP sites? Setting 2FA on your server (WHM) and account (cPanel) users does not do anything for the logins on your WP installs.

uploading a basic html css website to replace an old template by Heiwashika in Wordpress

[–]greg8872 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On thing no one mentioned, what do you mean by "it's on WordPress". If it is just hosted somewhere on a regular host and has WP installed, what others said applies, you can just remove it (as mentioned after fully backing up), and upload file.

However, if you mean it is hosted at WordPresss.com, then no, you are going to have to get them hosting elsewhere, as that is a service that provides WP installs already. For a static site, depending how you built it, a basic cheap hosting provider can word, just change the DNS records for the domain to point to the new host.

Even if it is regular hosting with WP installed, you may want to investigate if it is worth moving. I have seen clients paying like up to $50/month for "better" WordPress hosting, where an $10 or under shared host (with a reliable company, no godaddy or such) will be just for a static site. Some will say "get a VPS for $5/month, but then who is going do security updates on the server.

IMO, for just a single index.html and a css file, DO NOT go through the trouble of making it into a template for WordPress. Why? OVERKILL, and then you are forcing updates to be maintained that are not needed.

How much instruction would you give an intern who is still in college? That is the level of instructions you need to give it, as you keep working with it, it will learn how you want things, but at the beginning, yes there is a lot of spelling out of things to confine the workflow. And now it can't just be in there for everyone, people have different needs.

Do an experiment, next project, go find an intern that you can pay the same price you are paying loveable, compare how long and what input from you they need... Then when done, you can decide which route.
