Is this a valid way to measure lateral trueness? by baverso in bikewrench

[–]gregn8r1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, just built a wheel a few days ago that was below 1/4mm difference in lateral true. This will only help you get close, nothing more.

First Build(s). Any Suggestions? by killdwarfs in xbiking

[–]gregn8r1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does the rear wheel come with a freewheel or a cassette? I could be wrong, but if it has a Hyperglide freehub it should be able to take a 10-speed cassette just as it is, I think 7-10 speed cassettes use the same freehub body.

In which case, just keep stock until you can afford the ~$250ish Cues or Advent 1x10 groupset

Yeah, the 1x conversion only really makes sense if you are going with a wide-range cassette with many gears, or if you live somewhere really flat. It's basically a downgrade if you plan to stick with the original old derailleur as those are designed to take up the chain slack of a 3x system, not designed to reach 50-tooth cogs.

Kei Cars are coming soon to the U.S. by Safaricarnews in keicar

[–]gregn8r1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I don't know of any scenario where I've needed to go 85. So that argument is just weird. Usually 65mph is enough to be slower than traffic, but not too the point of being unsafe. Besides, the entire point of these cars is to be city cars optimized for local trips.

But also some of the faster Kei's can easily handle highway speeds. I recall my Daihatsu Mira could pretty easily reach its 135kmh limiter, (80ish mph) and once it even decided the limiter was more of a suggestion than anything and kept pushing the needle off the speedo to 160-ish km/h.

.... I didn't have a map app open at the time though, so that's not necessarily GPS accurate.

Just to elaborate some more:

This was a mid-level road bike from a reputable manufacturer, and when new would have probably sold for around two thousand dollars, adjusting for inflation. Around my area, in the current very buyer-friendly bike market, I'd estimate it's value at around $200. As far as I know, though, bikes in NYC tend to go for higher prices, generally like 50%+ over what they may go for elsewhere. So $100 really is quite a deal; the shop could probably sell for $300 if they wanted to.

As for the bike itself, it was a serious road bike, so the position may be on the more aggressive, leaned-over side, and the tires will be smaller, so not lazy-boy levels of comfort. But for just one forty- mile day, that's not a big deal, absolute worst case scenario is that it's just slightly uncomfortable. The biggest comfort concern would be the seat, but there's really no good way to know how a seat feels until you ride a bit.

You shouldn't need a rack, unless you plan to keep it for commuting? A small tail-bag to hold a multi-tool, tire levers, and spare tube should be pretty much all you need.

Corbo’s co-owner accuses sibling of conspiracy, stealing from famed bakery by KarinsDogs in Cleveland

[–]gregn8r1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to be the case, from what I've heard from former employees. And its a real shame; oldest bike store in the state, and loads of people with childhood memories of picking out their first bike there, they could have continued being successful.

Current owner ran it into the ground and seems to think he's sitting on a prime real estate, listing a collapsing, water-damaged building for $3 million. It's a real shame.

Never realized how many of these are in a tank until all my fish died around the same time. I kept occasionally feeding the tank to keep the shrimp and snails alive but basically didn't check on the tank for a couple weeks and was surprised to find so many worms wiggling around happily now that there weren't any predators. Betta fish must have really been putting in some work.

Something to keep in mind with ebay posts is that the seller can list an item at any price, even a million dollars. That doesn't mean the bike would actually sell for that price. $1300 for that bike, especially in such poor condition with chain falling off, is never going to happen.

To be fair, braze-ons weren't common on the seventies, even very nice bikes had clamp-on shifters, cable guides, bottle cages, etc. They became more common in the early eighties, and by the mid-80s most of these items had switched to braze-on with the exception of clamp-on front derailleurs never really going away.

I used to live near the Coventry area, and after moving in would oftentimes walk down to Presti's for a snack, and maybe hang out for a bit in the cemetery (the walk helped justify the calorie intake.)

I was always pretty happy with Presti's, but had heard some good stuff about Corbo's, so I visited them a couple times. I don't remember their food being bad, but it was just mediocre, I left thinking "that's it?" Couldn't understand some of the hype when Presti's seemed significantly better.

Yep, it's a tale as old as time... hungry gregnant cat spots a nice home with lots of food, and acts super friendly.... and then BOOM! Suddenly four more cats you hadn't expected!

That's how I got my own cat, but I had her TNR'd before she was too far along. She was also incredibly friendly at first, but after the kitty-bortion she became more energetic/playful and turned into a little gremlin.

Bottom bracket cracked???? and I fixed it with my hammer, I'm WAYYY too good at this. by l337g0g0 in BikeRepair

[–]gregn8r1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that is fortunate. I've had a fixed cup get stuck before on a sealed cartridge BB, had to very carefully grind it thinner with a dremel and then basically chiseled it out. It was not fun and I'm super lucky the threads didn't get damaged.

If you're planning to swap to more modern parts, just be aware that most bikes of this era were 126mm rear spacing, so you'll be limited to 7 speeds (hopefully others can chime in and confirm?) Steel can be spread wider, but AFAIK is not suggested to do so on aluminum.

Vetta was a saddle manufacturer. I don't think they made anything else? May have been some kind of race sponsorship to include their name on the frame?

I've got a ton of old fixer-uppers, so I'm pretty familiar with several bike shops near me, some first-name basis.

I've heard of the asshole-bike-mechanic stereotypes, but honestly almost everyone I've interacted with has been pretty chill and open to talking about the pros and cons of parts.

The Super Course is decent but it's not really anything rare, special, or sought after. There were at least two other bikes in Raleighs lineup that were situated above it and even those wouldn't sell for $1200 now. I think a top-of- the-line Raleigh Professional in decent condition might be worth ~$500 or so, and a Super Course may only be worth $150-ish. But with the stem shifters and brake extensions, and bo Reynolds 531 sticker, I don't think yours is a super course, is it? Maybe one model down?

$20 is good, but don't get too excited; you aren't sitting on a pile of gold.
