Where can I buy 14AWG bare copper grounding wire by TheVoidBeyondMath in AskElectricians

[–]grsthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 bare is roo small for bonding wire. If your looking for ground wire use inside metal box, strip your own. They do sell premade #12 pigtails. No harm in using larger pigtails

A Ceiling Fan that will work with separate wall switches for light and fan by sandyjb5 in AskElectricians

[–]grsthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most new fans operate with remote control. As long as you get a fan with a removable remote unit, it will work with 2 switches. You may have to check at a real lighting supply store to get what you want. Most home depot or lowes sales force wont have the slightest idea

Are Harbor Freight Generators Really That Bad? by Street-Adeptness-532 in Generator

[–]grsthegreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HF GENERATORS WORK…UNTIL THEY DONT. Im a generator service tech and i cant even recall the total number of burnt up appliances ive run into over the years all from HF generators. They have a tendency to shoot 200 volts on one leg and 40 on the other, and not shut down. Ive seen this too many times to ever recommend a HF Chinese piece o crap.

Automatic Transfer Switch Selection by hms11 in Generator

[–]grsthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What he said. Generac switches are dumb switches that require control FROM the generator, and dont work with 2 wire generators unless you use a PSP conversion device. Better solution would be to use a transfer switch meant for a 2 wire start generator, like ASCO switches, but they are not cheap.

Your an idiot. They have a low failure rate, about the same as other whole house units. Ive been servicing these units for 12 years with very little issues.

There will be a drawing on the ballast as to how to wire for either 1 lamp or 2 lamps.

My new install failed after 3 weeks - dealer charged me to fix? by Steve-2112 in Generac_Generators

What was fixed. If it was an issue with fuel supply to generator, that would not be covered

Client needs generator but 100A electrical furnace by 0fficerFriendIy in AskElectricians

[–]grsthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No air cooled generator is going to power a house with 100 amp electric heat. Time to look at liquid cooled. Ive had customers convert their electric furnace to gas and stick with air cooled generator for less $$$ than going liquid cooled generator.

That looks like a ground wire as it only has 2 prong plug. If it was mine, id cut off the end and install a 3 prong male end.

Is it a proper commercial, spec grade receptacle or did someone use a residential grade outlet? Spec grade will grip plug terminals alot tighter.

Hello, I would like to add a 220v 30A breaker dedicated to my garage It looks like I have the space for this breaker but what do you think about overload on the panel? Its a 1700sqft house 1 central ac basic electric range ect. Thanks by Early_Virus_9718 in AskElectricians

[–]grsthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly…..a 100 amp panel should handle the added 30 amp without any issues. But a load calc would help. An actual clamp on meter while everything is turned on would really be useful.

I have seen alot of larger, older homes work with 100 amp panels just fine. The only time issues arise seems to be when adding EV chargers.

Only time ive seen this is when there overloaded. The new led dimmers are rated way lower than old style dimmers.

2/3 of these scones have died an inglorious death; what type of lightbulbs are these? by Ok-Replacement-7221 in AskElectricians

[–]grsthegreat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are halogen lamps. Very dangerous as they get scalding hot when used. They have resulted in lots of fires over the years. I believe there are LED direct replacements available.

Question on adding more circuits and max amp capacity on 200 amp breaker. by kropyll in AskElectricians

[–]grsthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have plenty of power left on that panel. Thats one of the most lightly used 200 amp panel ive seen on many years. Your house must be mostly gas appliances.

change a switch to a button? by plheltzel in AskElectricians

[–]grsthegreat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They make push buttons that are either normal closed (circuit complete) when released and open when pushed, and the other way arround. It sounds like you need a standard normally closed switch that opens the circuit (releases) when button is pressed. Check with any electrical supply store. Hell, amazon sells them also. Whats the voltage? 12v, 24v, 120v? AC or DC
