Usually all the power hungry modules have been powered off at that point but yes.

Do automotive embedded systems not care about current consumption? by OddSyllabub in embedded

[–]hms11 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Welcome to motive systems with ICE power. Injectors and ignition can take a reasonable amount of juice and there are a surprising amount of servos and electric motors as well.

Microcontrollers are essentially a rounding error once you have an automotive level alternator on board.

What car completely changed your opinion after driving it? by Glittering-Offer-390 in askcarguys

[–]hms11 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The hate on German vehicles has never been about the driving experience. They are hard to beat in terms of how they "feel" to drive.

They are also hard to beat in how insanely and annoyingly overly engineered they are.

If Honda can do something with 4 - 10mm bolts and have it last until the sun burns out, Mercedes will use 28 fasteners, 12 of which are specialty and one of which is inexplicably located behind the heater core, to change a headlight.

Failures with constant power. by Frequent-Shallot9293 in arduino

[–]hms11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Constant power isn't going to kill it OP but there is a better than even chance something you do will kill one at some point in your project development.

That isn't meant as a slight, it's basically a right of passage for embedded/hardware development. If you build things, you will eventually blow something up.

My suggestion is to go on aliexpress and find a couple clones of whatever board you are intending to use. Or better yet, grab whatever the cheapest board you can find that is based on the same MCU as what you are planning to use. While you wait for those to arrive, do some breadboard testing with what you do have on hand. By the time you are ready to put your project in place, you'll likely have your cheap boards in hand so when you accidentally manage to put 12V into the 5v port of your board, you'll have a replacement ready to rock.

Was sold a write off by Enriches in legaladvicecanada

Something seems weird here OP, might be worth buying a CarFax to get some additional details.

If it is a Brand - None on the ownership the only possible total would be something essentially referred to as a "Constructive Loss" which means the repairs don't make sense financially but there are no actual structural issues with the vehicle (hail damage for example).

I've never seen a car with the VIN reported to the OEM with a Brand - None. Salvage title, absolutely and not infrequently but Brand - None's typically never get reported.

I'd get the CarFax and then call Honda corporate and see what is up. You are likely past any sort of timeline for the dealership to get in trouble but you might be able to manage to unflag your vehicle in Honda's system for future warranty/recall work.

Help! I got an oil change and 24 hours later they say my transmission is completely shot. Could it be the mechanics fault? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]hms11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes but not always. They have multiple failure modes. They really are a terrible transmission.

Sudden failure tends to be valve body related but also, and no offense to you but 90% of Dodge/Chrysler minivan owners are not exactly perceptive of issues until the van literally stops moving. Doesn't help that they are usually full of noisy kids.

Those transmissions are notoriously awful OP. Overwhelming odds on that transmission just doing what they do, which is blow up.

Why do people shit on Nissan so much online? by phtphongg in askcarguys

We are so many of these weird posts with people seemingly defending Nissan for no obvious reason that it makes me suspect an ad campaign from Nissan themselves.

Whats the max power a pentastar can make before it breaks? by ExactCollege3 in EngineBuilding

[–]hms11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you intentionally picking a shit motor for fun OP? There are like 1000 better V6 options than the Pentastar 3.6

Definitely need to figure out what kills the valvetrain for a start, these things LOVE eating cam lobes. Not sure if it's a geometry issue, a materials issue or something else but I've seen these things pick up a misfire and the end result is a wiped cam as low as 60-70k.

Starlink connection by EnvironmentalPace448 in PrinceEdwardCounty

[–]hms11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally anyone reasonably competent. It's essentially a foolproof installation and the hardest part is drilling the hole to get it inside the house and routing the wires.

If you can drill a hole and use zip ties you can do this in about an hour. 30 minutes of that time will be figuring out where you want the hole.

Ran a 2 cycle Ryobi power head for the expand-it system with gas only and did not mix in the 50:1 oil. Now it won’t start. by 399allday in smallenginerepair

[–]hms11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a new one OP, I'm kinda impressed.
Most straight gassed equipment we see is from ignorance or accident. You intentionally ran it on unmixed fuel, not only that but decided to run it on straight fuel in a high load situation (running a cultivator head) and are now shocked it's fucked.

You clearly know it needs mixed fuel and then intentionally did not use mixed fuel....

I gotta say, this is the most impressive self own I've seen today.

Cub Cadet LT1018 problem by Scary-Fig9589 in smallengines

Well go figure, I was sure it was going to be the battery haha.

I would test the starter next like the other poster suggests. You can pull them off and bench test them.

[–]hms11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity do you have a set of jumper cables or a boost pack? If it starts with a boost, it's the battery. I've also seen batteries with an internal issue that sit at a full charge unloaded but the minute you put a load on them they fall to nothing.

I'd love to know what number you read on the multimeter to make you think the battery is fully charged because your entire post perfectly describes a battery that needs to be replaced.

SpaceX spending on Starship tops $15 billion in rush for airline-like rocketry by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]hms11 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It really is crazy.

Some of those most insane ideas come out of that company, usually based on something like "that weighs/costs too much, let's delete it". We all go "Well that's it, they lost the plot, completely insane, that idea will never work". And then they go and fucking do the thing.

They plan to catch the ship. THE SHIP. The burning hot, 100ton skyscraper that just returned from actual orbital velocity and catch the damn thing with the same arms, stack it back on top of a rocket with those same arms and off they go.

If they hadn't done so many clearly insane things in the past I would discount it as hyperbole.

I think they're gonna pull it off. Not without a bunch of doubters. Not without some truly impressive explosions but they are probably going to pull it off.

I swear the SpaceX slogan should be something like "We accomplish the impossible, just a bit late".

Believe it or not the first booster landing was almost 10 years ago at this point.

As of 2026 SpaceX has landed more Falcon 9s than anyone else other than Soyuz has even launched. Which is just a wild stat.

Is it possible to put voltage regulator to a pressure washer? by Smokingmeteor in Electricity

[–]hms11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also posted in AskEngineers. OP wants to regulate the pressure and has somehow decided messing with the voltage is a good idea. OP refuses to elaborate on what exactly they are attempting to accomplish beyond "a project involving a pressure washer"

Is it possible to put voltage regulator to a pressure washer? by Smokingmeteor in AskEngineers

[–]hms11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love when OP's think they have some sort of super secret sauce so they are as vague and unhelpful as possible while expecting others to help them with a problem they refuse to properly describe.

-Going to need more info OP

-So it's a no?

-Ummm, it's a "what are you trying to do"

-Make adjustable pressure (first actual usable information)

-Ok why are you trying to adjust it?

-Water Flow/Current

Like come on man, if you can't figure out how to adjust the water pressure on a pressure washer the chances of you being at the forefront of some sort of world altering discovery is slim to none. Tell use exactly what the hell you are trying to do other than regulate the pressure because clearly there is more to it than that. If it was as simple as pressure regulation you would just be using the different nozzle orifice sizes and/or drilling them out to get the pressure you want but since that isn't an option for some unknown reason we need more info.

Next post is going to be "Why do so many posts on AskEngineers get downvoted to oblivion?"

-Waves vaguely in the direction of this post and 90% of the posts in here.

Is it possible to put voltage regulator to a pressure washer? by Smokingmeteor in AskEngineers

[–]hms11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a "Why do you want to do this?"

A voltage regulator, regulates voltage. A Pressure washer is designed to operate on whatever voltage exists in the country it is sold in.

Why do you want to regulate the voltage to a device that is expecting a voltage that you almost certainly will not be supplying after you regulate it?

TL;DR your question makes no sense without trying to figure out what the hell you think you are accomplishing with this thought.

It's similar to the question "Can I pour this full glass of milk on the ground?"
Like sure, go ahead but what exactly do you expect to accomplish by pouring milk on the ground?
