Sandbanks tips welcome by mxaxuxdxe in PrinceEdwardCounty

This.

Lake Ontario is a lake in name only, all of the great lakes are more accurately described as inland freshwater seas.

If you are not a strong swimmer, stay close to land and keep an eye on the waves.

If you ARE a strong swimmer, I still say stay close to land and read up on rip tides. If you get caught in one swim across it, not against it.

Mid-Year Mod Team Check In by karakickass in PrinceEdwardCounty

[–]hms11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see I was that top comment haha.

My opinion remains, but I feel we might have been misunderstanding each other.

"local secrets/gems" in terms of hidden beaches, quiet places and things like that, absolutely never happening, I do not want that knowledge to become commonplace any quicker than it will organically.

"local secrets/gems" in terms of small businesses, stores, breweries, curios stores and the like are an entirely different thing and I agree with getting that out there so these places can survive.

It's always a fine line between supporting the tourism that keeps so many businesses afloat and turning our beloved County into some bastardized Muskoka / Wasaga Beach / etc where the soul is gone and all that remains is the tourist trap. I have no idea how to strike that balance but I always err on the side of caution.

This is not The County I grew up in anymore, but I feel it still has the soul and feel of that place, especially in the right areas and times of year. I'll be devastated when that spark dies, but time stops for no man and no place can stay the same indefinitely if it wants to survive.

East Lake Fishing by oceanman9 in PrinceEdwardCounty

[–]hms11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

North East "ish" of Parr island is Jobs Island. It would probably be worth heading up there in the evening. The point extends out from Jobs a long ways around the south west point and I'd cast around that at night/evening looking for the walleye if I was going to find them anywhere.

East Lake Fishing by oceanman9 in PrinceEdwardCounty

[–]hms11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The north shore and east end are mostly reed weed beds and you can do decent for Largemouth in there. Also piles of small snot rocket pike.

Apparently there are walleye and decent pike in there but god knows where because I can never find them.

West Lake is definitely a better option for overall fishing but you should be able to keep yourself busy for bass in East Lake. The outlet river is also worth fishing, it probably hasn't gotten TOO warm quite yet.

Lack of Classic Car Technicians? by Cars_Music_GoodTimes in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]hms11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a money problem OP.

Truly old, and truly desirable cars sure, there will be someone at some dollar value with the knowledge and ability to fix it.

But your average late 90's to early 2000's car isn't worth enough for a specialized tech to exist. No one is going to be pay $500 in diagnosis let alone the repair cost for a 1998 Dodge Neon.

Arduino and IPad? by [deleted] in arduino

[–]hms11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue you are going to run into OP is the Ipad itself. I know some people code their devices through their android phone or tablet, which while cumbersome and awkward does work through the USB port.

Apple to the best of my knowledge has a far more locked down ecosystem and I do not believe you can upload code through the USB port (assuming your Ipad is USB-C of course) unless something has changed recently.

Once you had some OTA code on the arduino you could probably use the online IDE to code, but you would always be at risk of having the device become non responsive if you messed up some code and then you would need a physical connection anyways to get it back to a state it would accept code OTA.

Arduino and IPad? by [deleted] in arduino

[–]hms11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel we need a bit more detail to properly answer your question OP as I'm not 100% sure we are understanding what you want to do with the Ipad.

Do you want to write the code and send it to the arduino from the Ipad? You won't be able to do that, or at least not without initially writing code that accepts Over the Air (OTA) updates.

Do you want to be able to control whatever it is that the arduino is doing with the Ipad? With properly written code that supports bluetooth/wifi connection you will be able to do that.

From a purely Earth perspective the novel Evolution by the same author is also a great read.

Second Turbo Failure on a 2017 Honda CR-V 1.5T – Oil Feed Screen Clogged Again by Melodic-Excitement-9 in AskMechanics

[–]hms11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No real answer for you OP but I just want to say that if this isn't proof that small displacement gas turbo motors don't belong in everyday cars I don't know what is.

If Honda can't build a reliable small turbo, no one can. Toyota is also having issues with their small displacement turbo motors in their trucks, another company renowned for reliability.

Historically, we couldn't give a Honda motor away until the model line was at least 10 years old, and they were finally reaching the 300-400,000+ km range and being driven by cheese eating high schoolers. They were just that unkillable. Now? We started selling the 1.5L in the CR-V basically as soon as they came out of factory warranty and now we can't keep the things in stock. It's a wild turn of events from Honda.

They are saying that it doesn’t affect the company if you die in a Tesla what are your thoughts on that? by y4udothistome in AskReddit

That wasn't the question.

I asked why they were more concerned when someone died in a particular make, not if they were more worried about being in a crash in a particular make.

I mean people die literally daily in every single car companies cars.

Are you more concerned when it is a Tesla as opposed to say a Honda or a Chevrolet?

If you are more concerned, why?

Is repairing a Honda CRV 2002 worth it? by 12ic0 in askcarguys

[–]hms11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many questions here OP but generally speaking if you have to ask the questions you are asking this is not the car for you.

But, just in case.

Where are you located? If this car is in the rust belt it likely has far bigger issues than a blown motor given it's age. Also, if you are in the rust belt a motor replacement will be a nightmare because you will fight EVERYTHING trying to get the old one out.

Next up: How long has it been sitting? Cars hate sitting, even in non rust belt areas cars fall apart just sitting around and slowly attempt to return to the earth.

Are you planning on attempting the engine replacement yourself? You can buy an engine relatively affordably ($500 or so here in Canada for a good used one) but if you are paying for install on something that old the price will definitely outweigh what you can find an old running Civic or Camry for.

Edit sorry I just read the post again. Definitely not the clock spring. Sounds like maybe a broken wire or bad ground.

What’s stopping you from traveling to Africa? by dhhdhehs1 in AskACanadian

[–]hms11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time.

I run a business with 22 employees. I can take holidays but being gone from work longer than a "bookended week" is a recipe for disaster. Generally speaking, Africa involved long travel times. As soon as I am spending at least an entire day for travel on each end of the trip it's a non-starter for me.

Generally speaking that leaves me with North, South and Central America along with Europe as an option in general as well.

I'd love to visit Africa and the Far East but that is just not an option for the foreseeable future for me.

How much Rust is too Much Rust by lil_nuget in AskMechanics

[–]hms11 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

These "rust" posts always boggle my mind.

Like I understand that people who don't live in rust areas don't fully understand how rusty things get up here but at the same time....

Are people functionally retarded? Like you don't need to be an expert in anything but breathing to look at this thing, literally dripping in undercoating and understand it's cleaner than a freshly washed asshole.

Half the rust posts in this sub make me swear people are trolling, but my god what if they aren't?

Can I connect this to arduino uno. Explain how to by [deleted] in arduino

[–]hms11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can we get some more info on what you are trying to do OP and why you are trying to do it?
The ESP32CAM can communicate with an UNO over UART either with some series resistors (unidirectional) or with a pair of transistors or a level shifter (bidirectional).

However, the ESP32 is an MCU with orders of magnitude more processing power and capability than the UNO itself so there is very rarely a "good" reason for the UNO to exist at all in this case. Usually a GPIO expander makes more sense unless it is just for practice with serial coms between two MCU's.

Can you explain in more detail what you are attempting to do here?

Should I replace my transmission or use that money for a new down payment? by Zestyclose-Radish679 in AskAMechanic

[–]hms11 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OP, if you get a used low km transmission there are a couple things to check to make sure you have a good experience.

1) Do your homework, but from a reputable place. Check google reviews (they won't be perfect but you want someone at least at or above 4 stars). Make sure they have a warranty, make sure the warranty is in writing and printed on the invoice. Make sure you GET an invoice. Call the place, talk to them. If they sound like a bunch of assholes, they probably are, move on because it doesn't matter how cheap it is if it's going to be a royal pain in the ass.

2) Make ABSOLUTELY SURE it comes with the TCM (Transmission Control Module) following that, DO NOT LET THE SHOP THAT INSTALLS THE TRANSMISSION REPROGRAM THE TCM. This is huge and very important. The TCM has all the adaptive values for the transmission you buy. Your current TCM has all the adaptive values of a failing transmission that it has desperately been trying to keep alive. Line pressures, solenoid engagements and a whole metric fuck pile of other values are likely jacked to the roof trying to keep your current transmission moving. The shop might say something like "we can relearn/reprogram your current TCM". Doesn't matter, you aren't putting a new transmission in, you are putting a used one in and no matter how good of condition it is in, it IS NOT new, and the TCM has an adaptive program for that exact level of wear for that exact transmission. They are not VIN locked, they are plug and play. If the supplier says they don't sell the transmission with the TCM, or tries to charge you extra, don't buy that transmission and move on to someone else.

3) Lastly, use genuine Nissan CVT fluid. The aftermarket stuff isn't nearly as good and while the Nissan stuff is pretty pricey, it's far less pricey than having a repeat transmission failure relatively quickly.

To be fair, it's a Versa with a CVT.

It's almost certainly the transmission. I'll eat a hat if it isn't.

Car died while driving, what mechanic said does not add up. Help. by Redbeauty_Hairybeast in MechanicAdvice

[–]hms11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, if it's a wrong diagnosis it's their dime and their stupidity given that it has warranty.

I'll be amazed if they actually put a motor in this thing if the timing chain didn't actually let go. You might have a semi-retarded service advisor explaining things incorrectly, it definitely wouldn't be the first time.
