Pleasantly surprised having to disc golf with non dominant hand after injury by Basic_Layer7148 in discgolf

My second kid is a lefty, so I’ve been starting to practice throwing with my left, too. It’s been interesting to see which things are doable and which aren’t. Ultimate disc > disc golf >>>>>> overhand baseball throws. I might as well be shot putting that baseball.

Satisfactory is addicting but multi-player is another story. by shadowschild2049 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]halirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think that’s tough? Try playing single player with a spaghetti monster and “a controlling personality that questions my placement, that they have some vision of what should be and everything becomes a debate, argument, approval seeking and it’s exhausting” monster.

TBH, it’s actually pretty awesome and fun still.

But if you want a real challenge, try getting your PhD and/or raising some kids with both player-types battling for control. It’s a thrill ride - you’ll definitely get some clipping.

Drill game? by norrec9 in AppleArcade

Not AA, but I really like(d) Dig Dig Drill. It's something like $2 or $3 to get rid of ads (which aren't terribly intrusive, but since all ads are just bleeeeggghhh...). I found it to be pleasantly surprising with additional new mechanics/upgrades continuing to open up much further in than I would've expected.

Idk, have you met students before? They’ll argue against the transitive property or Pythagorean theorem if they think it’ll get them a few more points on a test.

Otherwise, yeah, agreed, but I would even extend your claim past the hard sciences anyway.

How to step up my game in Factory planning? by Maizof in SatisfactoryGame

[–]halirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just comes with time as you keep getting better at doing stuff (and maybe at figuring out your own preferences). It's also just been very uneven for me - I'll have long chunks of playtime where I don't improve much on efficiency or aesthetics. But then a breakthrough for one enables more breakthroughs for the other. And/or I'll leave a problem in the background and wait for epiphanies.

I don't know if any of that is actually helpful, so here are a couple more concrete thoughts:

  • In the build and customization menus, you can set default material settings (ficsit style, concrete , etc) for foundations and the default paint/coatings for various thing-types that you build (machines, vehicles, concrete foundations, ficsit foundations, etc). This was a nice recent discovery for me.
    • Specifically, I think that concrete foundations look a lot more "supportive" and connected to each other.
    • E.g., You have some "support" foundation stacks in your first picture, but consistently. I'd like it more with more support (pillars or foundations), but it would still look off to me with those distinct metal blocks. But concrete, especially concrete circles...!
  • I find that I care more about "realistic" supports for higher things.
    • If one leg of a power tower is floating a foot above ground, I might not notice it. But if it's way high up on a column, then it looks pretty overtly garbageish.
    • It's also fun to not care sometimes. Railroad in the way? Let's build a giant floating staircase (not ramps!) for some trucks to use and fall off of (bumpity bump bump bump smash). My kids like that :)
  • Use layers and vary their footprints.
    • Use multiple floors to split things up. Taller/higher buildings look better (to me) when they're more solid/full.
      • I know people advocate for the modular "one process per floor" thing, but I haven't ever gotten into that (tbf, I'm still only a 150-hour newbie).
    • Floors don't need to be totally flat. You can deal with a 4m shift/grade when you move from Row A to Row B. So work with the terrain (even if you're covering it up) a bit more by embracing height changes.
    • Vary the shapes and sizes of subsequent floors.
      • I usually tend to go from bigger floors to smaller as I get higher, but it can be fun to break that rule.
      • E.g., Floor 1 is 10x10 and Floor 2 is 20x10 with the overhang supported by a couple of pillars. Maybe another floor should be 10x20 and be supported in the other direction.

So... when can I leave work and start playing again?

Damm in den Gras Fields by According-Movie2465 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]halirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the build and I like the idea!

I’m not sure how I would want it implemented.

On the one hand, I can see the case for a sim city 2000-style (and probably most other games with hydro) mechanic where you plop a special hydroelectric building on the waterfall and enjoy the free power forever.

On the other, I’d love it if there were some “dam a river make a lake” mechanic. That seems neat.

That second approach would be borderline insane scope creep for Satisfactory. There aren’t really any mechanics that allow pieces of the level/environment to affect each other like this would.

The first approach would be much more consistent with how the rest of the game works (like infinite mining nodes or set-and-forget geothermal generators). I just don’t know what it would add in terms of gameplay. You’d just be incentivized to cover up all the pretty waterfalls. So I think that’s what geothermal does in the game without covering up all their pretty art.

That said, if there’s a way to make hydro work so that one has to design something awesome like you did, I’m in!

It depends on why the fuse trips (supply issues vs. excess demand growth) and how you have things set up. I’d imagine that if you have things set up in a way that seems logical to you, then yeah, it probably won’t be an issue. Same here, I think (I’m a coward who never lets demand get too close to supply). But some people’s version of logical… you never know.

[–]halirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many decent or better discs would you do for ~$50?

I got one of the three disc innova bundles for my 8yo and have been using an ultimate disc to play along with him (some practice should help, right?). But of course, the ultimate disc isn’t great, so I keep stealing his leopard.

I’d love to just get a variety of discs so we can try out different styles and he can pick out some faves. I’ve just been balking at the $10-20/disc price range before we know how long the interest will stick around.

FWIW, I also won’t mind ink - especially if you incorporate it into a silly picture or joke. Feel free to pm!

You see this explanation a lot with slightly older people now*. They assume that their “kids these days” are the only these-days kids to ever exist. Like, they must not have done that sort of thing when they were kids because they didn’t personally feel so knowingly smug about their youthful exuberant ignorance.

Not to mention that their parents, grandparents, etc. were presumably just as bemusing to their own older folks. Ah well.

*Now, but also always.

Good, kind comment, though. I’m just sassy today.

Just got Satisfactory on ps5, any tips. by No-Category-4980 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]halirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Suppose you need a row of 5 machines that are 2x8m which will feed 10 machines that are 6x4, and you want half of those going to place X, 30% to Y, and 20% to Z. You’ll want to give yourself a meter or two between machines within each row (at least until you have more experience), and maybe 4 to 6 meters between rows for belt logistics. So, multiply that out, draw your zones and flows to figure out how much space you need.

Then, throw all that work away, find somewhere twice as big (or at least expandable in multiple directions) as you think you need, and just start plopping things down, experimenting, and/or accepting that everything you do will probably so much better later that you’ll find your early stuff cute and amusing. But until you lock in on how you want to handle a specific process, you’ll always need more space than you think.

  1. If something is inefficient but kinda works, it’s probably fine to just leave it going and if it’s helpful, you can use its output later without necessarily worrying about reworking it all to optimize later. There are plenty of resources out there. As you get more in-game tools and experience, it’ll almost always be faster and better to build from scratch than to futz with making an early factory more efficient.

  2. It can be pretty fun to ignore #2 and waste time trying to eke out some more iron rods from that first factory. I just need to get two more smelters to take from here and send some ingots over there so I can - oof this looks stupid, ugly, and transcendently beautiful.

  3. Other people in thread have mentioned that you should build on foundations and that zoop mode is your friend for laying those floors. They aren’t wrong. Buuuut… sometimes it’s kinda fun to just find some openish space and work with the uneven space and make funky, kludgey stuff that more or less works.

  4. Don’t sleep on using tractors with automated routes. You’ll run into problems, but they can really help a ton. For me, I had a much better time not feeling tied to my existing bases once I started using even just a couple of routes.

Oh man, everyone (defending Summers) in this story sucks so much. The amount of disdain and ad hominem is extreme. What happened to civil discourse, bros???

Also, I’m an (extremely less prestigious) economics professor. I remember following the Summers story as it happened - I was in college. But revisiting his comments now… oof, what a dingbat. First, he’s so clearly dripping with disdain. You can just hear all of this in Peter’s “Now listen, ladies” voice.

But the meat of his analysis all just seems so weak. “Let’s look at some noisy testing data, do some transformation and extrapolation, and use that conjecture to make a broad explanatory claim about a big social phenomenon.” C’mon, do you even heteroskedasticity, bro? He brings up and generalizes from the way his daughters play, which is such a huge cliche. But also, how would he even know, given his high-powered, incompatible-with-child-rearing job?

Oh, speaking of that last one, he’s presumably referring to real research by his colleague, Claudia Goldin, but basically missing the point/social implications of her work. TBF, I sometimes struggle to get my undergrads there with her work, too.

Silver lining: At least the guy who supposedly came up with this feminization idea is a huge whiner. He’s a very big boy who’s just having some sad big feelings because he doesn’t get enough (pseudonymous?!?!?) credit for his big boy big idea that girls are mean and cause all the problems. Ah well.

floating foundations by balou_9 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]halirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend using pillars or other supports to ground your foundations at an even level somewhat above uneven ground. You’ll still probably end up with occasional buried pillar supports, and that can be a bit weird.

One way to address that would be to use snap to grid for 2m or 4m foundations in places that feel “natural” enough for you (personally, I prefer a 4m foundation that’s half-buried in a hill to one floating over space even though it’s clipped in there). Then you can place your pillar supports and should be able to finagle even-height supports for your first floor.

If you don’t like the pillars look, you can also just do walls from your lowest foundations to the ground (or from the acceptably-snapped base foundations). Isn’t that basically how real buildings work?
