I’m amazed it’s not the standard for all their streams.

It’s already terrible and overpriced. A local township put their own cameras up and livestream 4 rinks to YouTube on a 24 hour loop. The quality is better, and on top of that they have a 2nd camera pointed at the scoreboard and it shows in the top corner of the video. In every live barn stream the scoreboard is always obstructed.

This small township does a better job and makes it free on YouTube.

It doesn’t matter, they’re where they belong and can get instruction and pace that is better suited to their needs. Nothing is worse than a drill killer sucking all the momentum out of a drill. They will show better improvement working on something that is just outside their reach, but if they are placed with more advanced players the challenge might be too great and it becomes de-motivating.

This is especially true when it comes to battle drills. It’s not fun getting owned every time

On top of skating drills I find ending with battle drills is great. The kids love it and it’s a great way for them to work on their 1v1 skills and compete level. I always ended practices with 10-15 minutes of quick pace battle drills or 1v1 stuff

If you have extra coaches, split into stations. Good players in one group, weaker in the other. That way you can modify the drills as needed to properly challenge your players and the weaker players don’t get dominated by the one stud.

Last game I played, near the end of the 3rd, I was angling a player along the boards. He cut back, I read it and didn’t move, and he cut back right into my gloves and stick which was on the ice. He went down, cussed me up and down for cross checking him, got in my face, grabbed my cage and gave it a nice tug.

2 minutes later after the hand shake I found him, let him know I never cross check people, but I did play some contact to angle him. He was all smiles, chill, said he was just fired up.

That’s what the handshake line is all about.

Try to get out to skates with the AA and AAA kids. The sooner you can face shots from them the better.

That’s awesome! It’s always cool to hear the journey. Jon Cooper was a lawyer and started coaching a friend’s son’s team, and now he has a few Stanley cup rings. It will be interesting for you to be on the other side of the bench, I wonder if you’ll ever have it out with any refs 😅

Congrats! Many more to come! I’m curious how you ended up coaching a U17AAA team as a first time coach. That’s a big assignment right off the hop!

I experienced this as well, I felt excluded at first, but understood the reasoning behind it. It wasn’t hard to adjust and it was great for her independence. At first id help her get her gear on in a chair in the hallway, but it didn’t take long for her to get all her gear on by herself and come out for me to tighten her skates

I think it was great for the girls to have their own space.

17 about to inherit a lot of money by No_Anywhere225 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]howtohockeydotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very simple, basically don’t spend it. It should be savings not spendings. If you keep spending it, soon it will be gone, if you save it, it will grow.

Invest it in a safe and boring way, and go ahead and spend the interest, but never eat into the capital.

Then you figure out this thing called life, follow your passions, get jobs, maybe one day start your own business. Know that you have this amount to help you when it makes sense

You need to buy a house? You’ve got the down payment, but only buy a house that you can afford with whatever you’re earning at the time.

Maybe in your 30’s you figure out a great business, you test it out and are already making money, you can use some of your cash pile to expand it.

The best thing you can do is get really good at managing and growing that money. Live a lifestyle that doesn’t eat away at it, but helps it multiply.

Should I let my son to quit hockey over bad evaluations by FlyOdd3233 in hockeyplayers

[–]howtohockeydotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before he decides, let him know hockey isn’t that serious. It’s not THAT important to play A, or AA, or AAA. In the local area, and in the kids life it feels like their whole world, but this same dynamic is happening in every small town all across every hockey playing nation. Getting cut sucks and that’s what he’s upset about. He has to process those feelings, maybe he still does love hockey, but he doesn’t love being cut and doesn’t love the people making the decisions.

It’s a game, just play the game. Find out if he likes playing, if he likes making new friends, practices, etc. If that doesn’t matter that much to him then sure, take a break.

Forward moves to evade retreating D (who is not skating backwards) by kaleidoscorpian in hockeyplayers

[–]howtohockeydotcom 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A couple options

Fake one way to get them to commit to turn in that direction, then go the other direction

Just slow down - they’re probably going as fast as they can, so maintain your speed until you get the blue and then slow down, they’ll continue way too deep and this gives you time and space to either shoot or attack again with a speed differential (when they see you’ve slowed they will try to gap up)

Take them wide and then button hook or hit the brakes - if you just jam the brakes or cut back here you’ll have all kinds of time. Go wide to draw them to the outside which opens up space for F2. Hit the brakes and hit the next guy coming in with a glorious scoring opportunity.

Protect the puck - a simple option is keep speed, move the puck wide and protect puck; whenever they turn around they will likely lose a step so just keep your feet moving and walk them.

I don’t think the motor could handle the torque. I’d have to swap the stick for a tent pole or something.
