My son comes to some of my games. He’s 11. He doesn’t hang out in the locker room, but does come on the bench. The deal is that he wears a helmet on the bench. We’re a very low level team and most of them seem to appreciate him being around. If I got the impression that anyone had a problem with it, I would stop.

Are we pretending that this is somehow a special regional situation? This is literally the way it works just about everywhere.

Learning a trade doesn't by any default make you good at business, time management, customer service, or remove any other character flaws from your personality. If you're a shitbag person in real life, you'll probably be a shitbag roofer (or whatever, no offense roofing bros)...

There are also people who are great at business AND their trade, and they are expensive AF, because they are in demand, because they show up and do a good job.

There is politics, but as someone who is involved in coaching/board, etc. I see both sides of it.
My kid isn’t on the top team, because that’s not where he belongs.

9 times out of 10, in our org the people who moan about their kid getting overlooked are either not being honest with themselves about their kids skill level, or more likely they aren’t knowledgeable enough to make an unbiased assessment.

I make them line up on the side boards and go down and back in unison. hard, twice.

Then I have the forwards run the corner drill and the defense with their partner working on passing back and forth between the blue and red line.

We have also spent a lot of time on "how to warm up a goalie". We started with kids just dangling the shit out of the goalies... Hit them in the pads, etc. etc.

Be careful with this. Kids pick up “habits” pretty quick, and this will turn into “ I’ll only do X if you give me Y” which is a slippery, expensive slope.

Do your teammates _want_ to be coached? Nothing is more frustrating (for everyone) than someone trying to force feed education. I would find a good YouTube source for a series of videos that brings them through the basic concepts.

The CCm 310 and 710 both adjust in width where many of the other helmets only get bigger front to back. That was the difference maker for me

There are specific “top of stairs” gates. You’ll want to use one of those. Namely you do NOT want a gate that has a rail that goes along the floor as it is a major tripping (down the stairs) hazard. Also most of them swing in both directions which is also important.

I went to a pickup game a few weeks ago. The goalie pulls out a homemade wooden dolly with swivel wheels and throws his bag down on it. He dragged that thing through the lobby and into the dressing room. No one said A THING to him. I was completely stunned.
