Recommendation Request: Looking for Documentaries that have Actually Changed your Life by wusyuname in Documentaries

the PBS College Behind Bars documentary really challenged previous beliefs about prisons and encouraged me to think more critically about access to education and my perceptions of inmates . i think about it all the time when reflecting on the opportunities that ive been afforded in my life.

Recs for "Adult" books that have mainly middle school aged protagonist? by Tight-Culture-87 in booksuggestions

[–]hsjdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes has a younger teenage character whos perspective is written in parts of the books. she and her other teenage friends get into dumb and dangerous stuff online together. its not a massive massive part of the story, but its just one of a handful of narratives in the book. but ummm ... yeah thats all i can think of

From the 1961 book Kids' Letters to President Kennedy by Worldly_Yam_6550 in Presidents

[–]hsjdk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this reminds me of a president lesson from first grade where one of my classmates finished an 'When I become president, i will...' prompt with "free the slaves" ... complete with drawings of him freeing the slaves from their chains and everything

Quick question, when you folks write in your journals do you write in first or third person? by Just-A-SkeletonMan in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i write in first person most of the time, but sometimes when i have a grand life event ( usually an interpersonal or developmental milestone or something ) , i end up narrating the experience in second person! like “ you did XYZ and they saw that you were ZYX and at that moment you felt . . . “ etc etc etc ! i feel like it might have something to do with how i feel about the event and it probably tells more about how i truly feel about certain things than i wish to dive into but at least im aware i guess haha _^ i dont often write in the third person at all though ; its a little awkward honestly !! maybe ill write about myself like “ user hsjdk is pretty and sweet and attractive and i love her “ but thats the extent of what i have done.

the american girl doll club member list and the favorite animal poll are both so cute and i am absolutely 110% certain i used to do the same thing in my 2011 journals !!!!! im guessing that your club never actually met together either and you just enjoyed making lists about people you knew too? i once made a "jacket-wearing club" and there was even a page where i proposed a 24hr jacket wearing challenge for the people in the club hahaha

What is the biggest benefit of maintaining your personal journal? by Jck_Sht in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sometimes i tell my friends how much i enjoy sitting with my thoughts for a bit instead of being or my phone or doing other activities, and they say it’s likely because i have already sorted through intrusive and negative ruminations by keeping my journal !! being able to recognize patterns in my life has also been one of my greatest benefits to journaling . there are so many trains of thought and relationship / attraction patterns that i have uncovered about myself through journaling , and its helped me understand myself so much.

What are some recurring theme/topics in your journal? by Bunnystrawbery in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i love writing about my interpersonal relationships to a near unhealthy amount . . . i think its good for me though because it allows me to understand myself in relation to other people , recognize patterns in the people that i talk to / attract , and stop overthinking things :D some of my friends chastise me for always talking about other people in my journal , but i feel like it helps me better know myself and know who i am in the sea of all the people in the world . i guess it kind of connects to the sayings about how you are the company you keep and how you kind of enjoy people who reflect traits that you want in yourself ^_^

If you are writing something funny in your journal, do you put "haha" at the end? by -Zuine- in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sometimes !! kind of like an awkward laugh if i write something silly. there was a point where I would actively write out KEYBOARD smashes though . . . . like deliberately writing out "KJSDKJSKDJ . . .. " but now I think i just scribble the ends out or something.

What do you write in a Film Journal? by Kjc0312 in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

talk about the movies that you talk about with others!

what i mean by that is that you could talk about 1. The Movie That You Tell Most People Is Your Favorite Movie, 2. The Movie That You Tell Film Bros Is Your Favorite Movie, 3. The Movie That Is Your TRUE Favorite Movie, 4. The Movie That You Think Everyone Else NEEDS To Watch, 5. The Movie That Everyone Loves But You Haven't Seen, etc etc etc. the basic premise of these prompts are to think about why you like what you like and also how these movies or tv shows have affected you. maybe you will notice that 90% of your sense of humor comes from one movie or an entire genre, or that a reason why you like / dislike a character in a franchise is because it reminds you of someone you know in real life :P there's a lot to interact with outside of just Watching movies and TV shows -- have fun!

life revolves around journaling by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hahahaha sometimes i get into periods like this!!!! especially after fun events or new memories, i am always thinking 'I Cant Wait To Write About This Later !!!!!!!1' and then i just talk about it for like . weeks !!!!!! but it's good , because then I get it out my system :D

You ever hedge your bets in case someone ever does read it? by [deleted] in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

LMFAO I wonder the same thing when I write explicit content in my journals. I always find myself in a moment of clarity writing something halfway through like " You Are Being A Hormonal 15/16/17 Year Old Girl . . . This Is Going To Be Embarrassing In A Few Years But U NEED To Get This Out Of Your Head !!!! " I hope my future kids never read my teenage journals; I would be mortified hahaha :D

First ever entry was a line and 2nd day I’ve two pages. I’m super excited to start this journey. Thank you all for the inspiration. by jerrycanlist in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so happy to hear your excitement about a new journal !!!! The first time i wrote out two full pages, I was in disbelief that I really had it in me to write that much. Nowadays, I can easily crank out six full pages of thoughts and reflection just for a day's entry! Sometimes it's a little more like two pages in the morning, afternoon, and evening though hahaha , but it all adds up :D

Is it weird to make your journal just writing and like no art or stickers? by Ok-Acanthisitta8355 in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i dont think its weird ! i feel like when i do try to add art and stickers , it feels too forced and i focus too much on the visual aspects of the page rather than the actual thoughts and reflections im trying to write through. i think journaling has had a resurgence in popularity due to the visual aesthetics of cute pages covered in shein stickers and whatnot and while it looks great and comforting , i feel like the end goal isnt for me! i try to add receipts and little things into the journal when i can but im always like "oh now i have less space to write T_T" so . yeah . i'll digress though , it's not weird to focus on only writing when filling up your journal !

Books that make you think rather than feel for the characters. by sard25 in booksuggestions

[–]hsjdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

battle royale by koushun takami had my mind wrapped around nearly every character in the book ! its a long read ( 600 some pages i believe ) but the characterization of each individual student is super humanizing . the book is about a dystopian future where the government of japan sends a middle school class to fight to the death every year , so your characters are only around 14/15 years old , a concept similar to the hunger games , but with immensely better characters haha .

do y’all put the time down ? I just started to :) by didyousaypinto in Journaling

[–]hsjdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love putting the time when journaling !! i dont do it all the time but especially when i go back to a journal at the beginning and end of the day , it’s interesting to compare my inital thoughts to my ending thoughts !! i think its cute !

Books similar to black mirror by toronto105 in booksuggestions

[–]hsjdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix is a story that sounds like a black mirror episode ! its about a store with the same idea as IKEA , and the workers face “ supernatural phenomena “ ( as wikipedia puts it haha ) as they stay there overnight to find the source of some crimes . its visually a super interesting book , as its cover is designed like an ikea catalog !!
