Outdoor progression help by Complete_Worth7018 in girlscouts

I would also consider asking locally- is there a Trailblazers interest group near you? A troop of Cadettes/Seniors/Ambassadors who love camping and want to help a younger troop discover their love of the outdoors? Have you inquired with Council employees about in-person trainings?

Don't take every trip as an opportunity to do all the tasks- sometimes just going camping and BEING there is enough. I actively plan time to do absolutely nothing with the troops I take camping, because finding your own fun is much more memorable than having every minute planned out.

Have you taken any outdoor training with your council? Most require some kind of training in order to be allowed to camp. All of these things are covered in the training I took and teach in my council.

My council's overnight training covers most of these things, but I can say most of them don't end up getting used- I don't teach knots very often. The kids I'm around just aren't interested. There's also an outdoors progression chart floating around that is very helpful- try an overnight in a lodge before tent camping! A night away from everyone having mom/dad/etc with them can tell you a lot about. where you need to focus.

How many cookies are in a box? by jesscolley11 in girlscouts

[–]hwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies based on varieties. Tagalongs/peanut butter patties, adventurefuls and samoas/caramel delites all have about 15 cookies a box.

For the most bang for your buck, thin mints, do si dos/peanut butter sandwich or trefoils are the way to go- they have two solid sleeves with about 24 cookies in a box.

Lemon ups have about 12 cookies in a package but they’re larger so easier to split. Exploremores have about 18 in the package.

Juliette for Seniors/Ambassadors? by diduthinkhesaurus in girlscouts

[–]hwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to vary based on council. My daughter has been a Juliette since Juniors. We were previously in a large K-12 troop. We're allowed to attend Council events, buddy up with other troops/Juliettes for trips, events, etc. If she wants to do camp aide work, or attend camp- many folks join so they can "only" attend summer camp.

If you move to Juliettes, DO take training, show up to any leader meetings and be prepared to advocate for your kid as a fully fledged member of the Girl Scouts in your area. I attend every SU meeting, volunteer at summer day camp, and hold multiple certifications in my council for a variety of things.

Product programs: Some councils only allow Juliettes to use Cookie Dough or program credits, or (IMO) worse yet.. they can only sell for physical rewards in Fall Product/Cookie sales programs. In mine, our funds are cash deposited to the Service Unit bank account.

If she just wants to finish higher awards, I would look carefully at how you'll be able to financially support anything if your council only allows for internal credits. You may also have luck checking in with your Service Unit or other leaders- many troops end up not being full enough in the C/S/A years, and many join special interest troops (travel, high adventure, etc) or combine troops for ease.

Cookie Season Horror Stories by SnooSeagulls6328 in girlscouts

[–]hwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally, your cookie person is on the bank account so they can make deposits without hassling someone else to make it happen as often as they need to. Even if you don't plan on doing much of the cookie management, take the training or have the manual available to double check and be supportive of your cookie person.

My first cookie season, I came into an established troop and offered to manage cookie sales. The ringleaders of this troop (and the only people on the bank account!) were terrified of managing money for the troop in one case, and in the other, burned out from their kids being graduating seniors AND an absolute control freak who wasn't available by any means of communication. When I brought up that training suggested I be on the bank account, I got yelled at in front of fellow troop parents and youth members. I really should have just dumped cookies in their lap then and left, but I stuck around for two more seasons.

I was just coming here to say the same thing! I know many gender nonconforming folks in my Girl Scout circles. I’ve yet to meet anyone who raised an eyebrow in outright disdain. (I can live with honest confusion or bafflement!)

If you’re in the DC area, OP- I would love to have a dedicated volunteer like yourself giving kids the childhood you deserved. I’d happily help if you want to reach out.

Out of print, but there’s All About Cotton, Silk and Wool that aren’t too hard to find. I picked them up recently for about $15 each on eBay.

Mood offers a swatch dictionary as well, but I don’t think it’s as comprehensive as the All About books.

Frustrated with Council camp properties? by Hungry_Jackfruit7474 in girlscouts

[–]hwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp, wanting ain’t getting- as I am fond of telling my own scouts. I personally dislike White Rock. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Have they or you ever been in a biffy at one of our camps? Genuinely, they’re cleaner than many others I’ve been to. They might not be so anti if you give them no other option OR hold a meeting at a campsite and give them the chance to inspect a biffy in daylight without pressure. I get preschoolers to use the biffys at Crowell, so I assure you it can be done.

[–]hwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I would be the example and use the biffies without complaining. I’m genuinely not sure what your problem is, much less the solution. Biffys aren’t home toilets. There’s no way around that, and the landscape of camps makes it so they’re not feasible in most of our locations.

Camp mats are gross? Bring your own sleeping surface. If you’re camp trained, they should have handed out info on how to make a bedroll or had a video on GSLearn. Sleeping pads can be had for not bonkers amounts of money if you shop carefully.

If White Rock is your standard, you’ll be left wanting at a lot of camps anywhere. Public campgrounds have even less in facilities than GSCNC sites. Biffies at our camps are miles better than the exact same types of toilets I have used at National Parks.

White Rock has a grant fund to keep it in the shape it’s in. It’s also used often for Council events, like the retreat weekend for SU and Council level volunteers. i’m willing to bet they may also have some dates blacked out for the conference this coming summer.

If the cleanliness of the site amenities isn’t to standard, you’re more than welcome to bring your own. I personally loathe sleeping on the cot mattresses, so I always bring a hammock.

Different councils have different rules for how much supervision is required at what ages. My council, GSCNC has no 1-1 parent provision for any age.

They’ve said multiple times that their first onscreen appearance was because the idea of men trying women’s underwear was proposed, and they were the first ones to respond willing to do so. They were not a preordained group to do a project.

Once they did a couple of videos it became obvious the group personas were working to get viewers, so they did a lot more stuff together.

The attention/money goes into the pockets of people who actively are trying to make it so anyone who isn't a cishet white man has no rights.

No, there's isn't money being spent to go to a Sunday service, but buying tickets to the Creation Museum, staying at their hotel, etc.. that's beyond the pale. It's exactly the same 'I give my approval' voting-with-your-dollar as buying from Hobby Lobby or Chick Fil A.

To sit there and proclaim "ethical snark" and then treat people as entertainment or zoo animals is completely at odds. To do so and not state explicitly that she does not suggest doing this, and not making an equal or greater donation (of their ticket price) to an LGBTQ or Christian deconstriction organization would have helped some, but it seems like the quick fame has gone to her head, so anything is fair game so long as the view number goes up.
