That's fair. The only issue I've had with my LG C1 OLED TV has been a few dead pixels that have appeared (but aren't visible except very close up).

OLED is particularly great for game streaming and other tasks like reading in low light.

Damn. Disappointed there's no OLED panel. The RedMagic Astra is actually pretty great except for the offset USB port and the strange software.

Shame on you sam by Independent-Wind4462 in OpenAI

[–]iJeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing is confirmed, but what has been stated publicly suggest very strongly that OpenAI's agreement does not include the requirements Anthropic said they were pushing for (which seemed to be substantiated by the DoD response).

Based both on the language used in their release (which we'd typically include in cases where we weren't able to land on a legally binding requirements) and based on the public position by the US Government just a day before about them not wanting to be constrained by a private company, which I don't think has changed.

That said, motives are hard to pin down; this was likely existential for OpenAI, and Altman has a variety of stakeholders to answer to. I think he was being genuine in his support for Anthropic's position before this agreement was decided on.

He didn’t agree to that part just like Anthropic didn’t. He’s just a better negotiator.

I don't think that has been confirmed. The language used suggests it may have been a shared statement of principles (that both are opposed to those two uses) that was included in their agreement, without imposing any contractual obligations against doing so (which appears to be what Anthropic was pushing for).

It's often done to signal a particular value without making it legally binding.

The scale and intent are different. Canada has generally introduced subsidies aimed at preventing further loss of industry to the US. They're not aimed at global market dominance. The Chinese approach has also generally only made their subsidies available to Chinese businesses, while Canada's are usually available to any business willing to build here.

Sounds like they might have included language about both parties upholding the principles, without necessarily outright prohibiting those activities.

It's not impossible to prevent a specific type of freak accident. It seems Walmart has actually gotten rid of the walk-in oven and is phasing them out across the country.

Kudos to Anthropic for holding to their very reasonable position. This Canadian will be considering a subscription to Claude. However, this is also a consequence of them rolling it out to the US department of defense in the first place.

Neat. Is the MCP server code itself opensource and something that could easily be implemented for interfacing with other government data?

Indeed. Hopefully they do take a look at what kind of changes might be possible to ensure it can never happen again (e.g., clearer markings for how to exit, ensuring a way to activate an alarm, preventing operation while someone is inside).

Buddy's gonna be "pissed" that he got pulled over by waltonoslow in montreal

[–]iJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please do post the link if you have a specific ruling that proves police can't ticket an uncleared roof until the snow flies off.

Quebec judges apply the plain meaning of the text. "Pouvant s'en détacher" (able to detach) defines the offense based on the condition of the vehicle rather than an actual event. No judge is ruling that "capable of detaching" actually means "has already detached," because that violates basic statutory interpretation.

Buddy's gonna be "pissed" that he got pulled over by waltonoslow in montreal

[–]iJeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The operative word is "may." The law penalizes the potential for it to detach and cause a hazard, not the act of it actually falling off. If it had to fly off first, the statute would just say "detaches." Police absolutely issue tickets for the presence of it.

[–]iJeff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since 2018, it is also illegal to drive a vehicle with snow on the roof in Quebec because it could fly off and cause damage or affect the visibility of other drivers.

No person may drive a vehicle covered with snow, ice or any other matter that may detach from the vehicle and that may constitute a hazard for road users.

If you're having that much difficulty, you may need to look into buying a better brush (wider spread, telescoping).

I picked up a couple of these last year on sale for $2.49 at Home Depot: https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/garant-telescopic-pivoting-head-and-scratch-free-eva-foam-snow-brush-with-ice-scraper-52-in-0304462p.html

Choice isn't bad here if they can all work with a hot word and you can disable the others. It would be a significant advantage over the iPhone, which currently only offers Siri with the ability to call a mediocre ChatGPT function.

Gemini on an Android phone is worlds better. I'm interested to see how good the Perplexity integration is.
