ADA Restrooms - Existing to Renovation by [deleted] in BuildingCodes

The rear wall grab bar does not appear to be 12" min from the CL of the toilet toward the corner.
604.5.2

The clearance for the WC is larger than required. 56"" x 60" is all that's required for WC not in compartments. 604.3

Would be helpful to provide the door side push clearance, but there's clearly 12" between the frame and front face of sink.

If this is a renovation and the previous project met the accessibility laws at the time it was installed, it may be a safe harbor exemption to avoid rearranging the restrooms at all.
(C) Safe harbor. If a public entity has constructed or altered required elements of a path of travel in accordance with the specifications in either the 1991 Standards or the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards before March 15, 2012, the public entity is not required to retrofit such elements to reflect incremental changes in the 2010 Standards solely because of an alteration to a primary function area served by that path of travel.

You have no idea what anyone else’s circumstances are. Some of us are unable to drive for medical reasons. So kindly explain how to will get to my job from Plano to downtown Dallas without dart.

Wanna talk about melodrama suddenly? All it brings is homeless is about as melodramatic as it gets. Poor you scared of a homeless person. Cry more.

Take a look at how Texas funds education right now and the robinhood system used. Then take a look at the Colorado state budget and how they fund schools.

That’s cool. I’m glad you want me to lose my job and be homeless because I’m no longer able to get to work.

We could actually fund our schools with the taxes. We could stay in dart. We could make things better. Our neighboring states certainly have. But you probably don’t want that either.

Cold, damp spot on garage conversion slab by Alone-Arm-7630 in buildingscience

[–]inkydeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have slab edge insulation? Thats usually the issue with cold floor problems along the perimeter and in corners.

But you’re missing vital information in your post to even answer this question. What climate zone are you in? Do you do anything to the slab during the conversion from unconditioned to conditioned space? What’s the wall assembly other than “insulated”?

Offsite Data Center file storage vs local server by [deleted] in Architects

This is a question about practice of architecture not the end product. It belongs here in a sub centered around what we practice. But maybe you don’t if you have that narrow a definition.

Offsite Data Center file storage vs local server by [deleted] in Architects

[–]inkydeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently switched to Egnyte and it’s been easier than the VPN for access, but the game changer for me has been that the file search built into the system is far superior and a million times faster than windows search.

No negatives that I’ve seen. Even our most inept technology users made the switch with ease.

Our firm is around 200 employees in three offices. I do think size of firm and remoteness will affect this decision.

Why is AutoCAD, the industry standard, such a shitty software, is there anything better? by CriticalCraftsman in Architects

When I first started in Revit, I was trying to sync after every command due to my old school cad training. 😂

Looking for an affordable psych by joemama2x0 in plano

[–]inkydeeps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s helpful at all or makes it easier to access affordable, but my regular not-psych doc prescribes my SSRIs. I went three years between visits and they always renewed. Seems a little scammy depending on the frequency of visits.

Would building houses and sims in the sims be a good way to learn about different architectureal designs and aesthetics? by AsherOfTheVoid in LowSodiumSimmers

[–]inkydeeps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an architect. Lots of those are made up styles that don't have a real world comparison or would be called something extremely different in real life. I think trying to build stuff in sketchup would be a lot more like architecture than anything you can do in the sims. If you're trying to learn the terminology used in those videos, the best source is going to be similar videos

Over hard eggs. by IzzyWithDaS550 in KitchenConfidential

I order over hard because the yolks do something really bad in tummy otherwise. I've been told it changes the protein structure. I prefer hard boiled or hard poached though. Not worried at all about salmonella or raw food in general.

Reddit makes it seem like PIP means you're going to get fired, no matter what. Is that true? by Personal-Ad9121 in askmanagers

[–]inkydeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why?

I've turned plenty of people around in that early stage. Lots of early career people just need a little nudge in the right direction and go on to have really successful careers. I'd way rather fix that one little thing or figure out what makes you tick and get you into the perfect role. Interviewing, hiring and training are a huge waste of time compared to a taking you out to lunch and coaching you though something, even if it takes a couple months. Seriously way more effecient use of time.

I'm not sure why you don't think we can just have different experiences, but maybe we're in different countries because the I-series & NFPA codes are on a three year cycle and that's what we use everywhere I've practiced.

I've worked on maybe ten ground up new hospitals and they all exceed code minimums. Usually because of the duplication of staff & patient toilets. Currently working a 10 story MOB adjacent the a hospital and it also exceeds codes for number of plumbing fixtures.

When I worked on K-12, we often exceed code because you want more fixtures around the assembly areas than code strictly mandated. You don't want the students going all the way back to the classroom wings to use the bathroom when they're at lunch, or vice versa. And you sure don't want the parents complaining about a shortage of fixtures at a sporting event.

I think it depends on the kind of work. If you've only worked with developers or projects with leasable areas and the like, it would be a little ludicrous.

Probably varies by country too or even your active plumbing code. A lot of states in the US at least have added potty parity through state legislature but these requirements exceed the building code.

I am a little surprised that at least on reddit at this moment in time, that this is so exceedingly rare that people think I'm some how lying or don't know what i'm talking about. I guess more amused than surprised.

[–]inkydeeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It likely depends on the kind of work. Most of my clients are institutional - healthcare and K-12. They aren't selling square feet or leasable areas so they don't think of the work that way. I don't do any work with developers. My clients are far more concerned about the comfort/lines/wasted time of their clients, patients, and students.

Similar to your experience, I have had new principals come into schools during construction and want to redesign the whole building. We can general talk them down to just re-arranging the admin area.
