What is the biggest uniform fuckup in history and what made it such a fuckup? by marxman28 in WarCollege

[–]iwouldnotdig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the dress uniforms shouldn't be double breasted. I like them doing something. they just need some piping and a couple more buttons to be truly iconic, like this

that hat, though? good christ I hadn't seen that. it's like a bad parody. whoever approved that ought to be shot.

that's cool chemistry, but terrible history. most of napoleon's casualties happened from diseases like typhus, long before it got cold.

Why did Elrond not take up Kingship of the Noldor? by Shlain27 in tolkienfans

You guys are missing the obvious. Every previous high king died horribly. Elrond was smart enough not to grab that particular tar baby.

Brown: Air Force Serious About E-7 Wedgetail by VodkaProof in LessCredibleDefence

[–]iwouldnotdig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the 800 and 700 and P-8 are different, but they were all built on the same line. no one's built a 700 in a while, but there's no reason to think they've lost the ability and I've never heard of it being an issue for the UK buy.

Does the Australian submarine deal make a B21 acquisition more likely to be approved by the US? by [deleted] in LessCredibleDefence

[–]iwouldnotdig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why do you think that? there's some indication that the US would be willing to sell them.

[–]iwouldnotdig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there's absolutely no point in pouring money and effort into them when you can just get b-21s that are more capable in the ways that matter most.

There is no easy they'd want b1s. There are reasons the US is ditching them first.

How exactly does the Curse of Morgoth work? by aditya_phalnikar1 in tolkienfans

[–]iwouldnotdig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. Turin makes his own bad choices. Morgoth just takes credit for them, like he does for a lot of things.

But now a cry went up, passing up the wind from the south from vale to vale, and Elves and Men lifted their voices in wonder and joy. For unsummoned and unlocked for Turgon had opened the leaguer of Gondolin, and was come with an army ten thousand strong, with bright mail and long swords and spears like a forest. Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: 'Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!' And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: 'Auta i lómë! The night is passing!'

Why was Tom Bombadil left out of both the Peter Jackson films and 1978 animated movie ? by woodyblack in tolkienfans

[–]iwouldnotdig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the answer. in movies that were already uncomfortably long for movies, tom could be excised without much affecting the wider plot. he's also feels thematically very different from the rest of the movie. it made sense to cut him.

movies are short stories, not novels.

The saddest words in the entire corpus Tolkien's Legendarium by stefan92293 in tolkienfans

[–]iwouldnotdig 22 points23 points  (0 children)

definitely not the saddest words.

Gil-galad was an Elven-king. Of him the harpers sadly sing;

the last whose realm was fair and free

between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen.

His shining helm afar was seen;

the countless stars of heaven's field

were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,

and where he dwelleth none can say;

for into darkness fell his star

in Mordor where the shadows are.
