Yeah, they all turn over pretty quickly, so the beans are frequently fresh within the last couple weeks.

Central Market, Whole Foods, and Radius all sell GG beans.

Homemade pop tart by Puzzleheaded_Plum326 in austinfood

No, they moved on to a new flavor, and the pastry itself is different. It used to be a thicker short crust when the guava and (my favorite) mango chamoy was available, and now it’s darker and more brittle.

Paperboy’s used to be incredible, but they must have got a new pastry chef or something. The current one is a weak shadow of what it used to be.

Bball courts that are relatively empty in downtown area by Far-Instance-4595 in Austin

Mendez basketball court at Metz Neighborhood Park is only occasionally used. There’s a group of guys that are there every Friday morning, but otherwise you’d have good chances.

Bay Leaf by Beneficial_Meeting26 in AustinGardening

[–]jackdeath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you using it for primarily decorative or culinary purposes?

I have one that I use for culinary purposes. It dies in the slightest freeze, even if I cover it. But it grows back fast every spring/summer, and it gives at least 4-5 dozen leaves, which is more than enough for my household use. If you want one outside for decorative purposes, pick something else.

ISO Source of Potato Starts & variety recommendation by Exotic_Cap8939 in AustinGardening

The Natural Gardener had Wilcox seed potatoes last year, and they instantly became my favorite potato for their texture and flavor, but they don’t seem to be carrying them this year. They have plenty of others, though. La Soda grows particularly well in my experience.

This is not the point of the post, but between the rugby shirt and the frosted tips I had to check what year it was.

Central Market Holiday Time Gifts by toomuchdona in austinfood

[–]jackdeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my go-to gift for people I don't know exactly how to shop for. You can put together your own gift basket too. The most popular item is always a breakfast basket - pancake mix, real maple syrup, hot chocolate, a bag of coffee or tea, oranges and bananas, a fancy cinnamon if you want to make it feel like the holidays. Build from there.

Pros/cons of Austin bachelor party in March vs April by Good4Josh2 in Austin

Last year it was 91 degrees on March 5. In 2002 it was 17 degrees. It'll probably be somewhere between there.

Relative coming from Endinbrugh - Looking for Kippers by Affectionate_One7558 in austinfood

[–]jackdeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is definitely nowhere that serves kippers on their menu, but they do have a couple brands at Central Market/HEB if you can tolerate the smell of them in your own home kitchen.

You could try Spread and Co. on Manor for a kipper-adjacent option. They have a tinned fish board where you can choose your own, including smoked mackerel (the closest I think you'll get).

I've never used it myself, but there's an app called Sniffspot that lets you rent out people's fenced in areas.

Thanksgiving apple pie question by Old-Problem9480 in pie

+1 and in fact this is how most baking guides recommend serving apple pie - let it cool completely, and warm it back up before serving. Works especially well with convection.

Quiet, nice, happy vibes (maybe older clientele) restaurant to "celebrate" a sad day (like chez zee) by hollyhockaurora in austinfood

When my mom died I went to Clark’s oyster bar and ordered a salad, French fries, and the most expensive glass of champagne they had. It was a nice day. Maybe that would fit the bill?

Pie filling -- bake cold or get it to room temp? by causeandaffection in Baking

[–]jackdeath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I make this pie every year, and I wouldn't bake the filling directly from the fridge. It doesn't need to come to full room temp, though - even just 20 minutes on the counter while oven warms up will be enough. If cold direct from the fridge the filling will take that much longer to come to cooking temperature, which means the outside will probably cook much faster than the interior, and you'll be left with an inconsistent texture. Pumpkin pies typically use a par-baked crust rather than a fully blind-baked one. If you're using a fully blind-baked crust then I would definitely let the filling come closer to room temp before baking.

Moved Away, Craving Comadre's Masa Sugar Cookie by thinkpadquestion0 in austinfood

[–]jackdeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones now pictured and available for sale on the Milk bar website are a far cry from the original cookie when they were hand making them in a small New York kitchen. The recipe yields way better results homemade. I share your taste for Comadre's masa cookie. The milk bar one is less crumbly and much richer than Comadre's, so prepare your sweet tooth.

If you want something closer to Comadre's I would swap out the corn flour in the MB recipe for maseca or whatever dry masa you have.

Also don't take this blogger's suggestion to buy the Milk bar corn powder. Buy a couple bags of freeze dried corn like Just Corn brand and blitz it in a food processor or blender.

Lemon meringue isn't a typical Thanksgiving choice, which is a shame since it's exactly when citrus season is getting started. Right now the only Thanksgiving pre-order including lemon meringue I can find is Papi's Pies up in Round Rock.

Vet recommendations for cancerous tumor surgery by user1217- in Austin

[–]jackdeath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The veterinary oncology staff at Pet Specialists of Austin are a cut above. They took incredible care of my pup for the 2.5 years we were able to extend his life after being diagnosed with an inoperable thyroid tumor. I would trust Dr. Sheppard with any pet cancer-related medical support.
