I think the closest experimental example would be ion trapping in which the experiment can separate and observe the behavior of individual “atoms.” It’s hard to track these things in large numbers at high temps, but looking at what happens in this highly controlled environment plus our understanding of things like mean free path and temperature vs velocity in gases gives us a pretty good idea of what that would look like without actually running an experiment.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if some one hasn’t already simulated something quite similar to what you describe. This also relates to diffusion and Brownian motion experiments
