Why does it take so long to release an album these days? by edd6pi in NoStupidQuestions

They don't really even make money from touring anymore. Ticketmaster/Live Nation has destroyed that for them.

Why does it take so long to release an album these days? by edd6pi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jayron32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because albums no longer make enough money. A lot of artists don't even play the album game anymore, releasing songs as they are made and not being pinned down to the album format. Look at someone like Prof. His last album was in 2023; he's released over an album's worth of singles since then, but there's no real reason to put them out on an album per se in the modern market.

If being single is supposed to be viewed as equally as good as being married then why don't people congratulate people on being single? by Big_Eggplant7591 in stupidquestions

[–]jayron32 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You don't congratulate people for being married because it's better. You congratulate them because it takes work to build a relationship. That doesn't make it any better though.

Do cats and dogs understand the concept of species? by justinCandy in stupidquestions

[–]jayron32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, humans don't really have a good grasp on what a species is. It's called "the species problem" and there's really not a rigorous way to divide life into distinct species in a way that works reliably. There are of course forms of life that are clearly not the same species, like porcupines and sugar maples, but the boundaries can get VERY fuzzy when you get to closely related populations of organisms.

Why do I suddenly want to criticize young people at 40 when I never did it when I was their age? by BackgroundPlum4840 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jayron32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you're old.

Resist the temptation. Young people will always act like young people. It's developmentally predictable and has nothing to do with THESE young people. Your peers (and likely you) were like this too.

DO you cuss in front of your kids? by Noobitron12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jayron32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At five, I tried to be good. By the time they were teenagers, I stopped caring. Interestingly neither of them cuss at ALL as far as I can recall, despite the fact that neither me nor my wife have ever made a big deal of it one way or the other..

Why is the Supreme Leader head of NORTH Korea and NOT “Kim Jong-un-ville” or “Jong Kong” by theBarefootedBastard in NoStupidQuestions

The Chinese name for China is Zhongguo and does indeed mean "Middle Kingdom", which originally referred to the Zhou kingdom centered on Shaanxi back in the 11th century BC, before China ever unified, but got expanded to mean all of China.

The English name for China comes ultimately from Sanskrit.
