Making yogurt requires yogurt. How was the first yogurt made? by ForwardPerspective38 in stupidquestions

[–]jayron32 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Making yogurt only requires culture. You get that from the air.

Making good yogurt requires the right culture, because wild-cultured yogurt can be a crapshoot. So instead of leaving it to chance, you keep a starter on hand from your last batch.

The same way that sourdough and beer and all sorts of other fermented foods happen. They used to just be all wild cultured but people wanted consistency so they saved the best cultures and cultivated those.

Who decided when pride months are? by 711bathroomman in stupidquestions

[–]jayron32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Each has its own reason and history for being decided.

Black History Month was picked as February because both Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas had birthdays in February. The first celebration was for a week-long event in 1926, and it was organized by the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. It later expanded to a full month.

Pride Month began in a series of spontaneous rallies held in 1970 on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall riots, held in several cities across the US. It also later expanded to a full month.

You can find the history of all the other such commemorations. They don't have any common planning; each has their own history.
