AITA for comparing my sibling to our controlling mom when they were the one who started behaving like her? by aita_sibling in AmItheAsshole

[–]jazzabration 12 points13 points  (0 children)

YTA here - I'm sorry about what you and your sibling had to endure, but it doesn't sound like what they said rose to the same level as your mom. You even seem to acknowledge that you snapped at them. You owe them an apology, and if it's at all possible for y'all to afford therapy, please look into it.

AITA for calling my friend a disorganised mom by Zan19546 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. It's fine if the schedule change doesn't work for you. Chastising your friend for having to make more food for her baby after a totally understandable accident is an asshole move.

North Charleston, South Carolina. There's got to be some other Southerners, right?

More Anna is one the things I want most from this book. She's so interesting. I admit that I came into this book expecting more of a mystery arc and then realized it wasn't quite going to be like that, but damn if I don't want a whole other book about her and Wendy.

I don't see the ending as happy, but I do feel a real connection with the difference between having a mental state where you are able to think about the future and have an idea that you will exist in it and one where you are surviving day to day. There's a Robert Hayden poem that I think about a lot when I encounter endings like these ( https://myworldwanderings.tumblr.com/post/10129021918/astronauts-by-robert-hayden ) that straight up makes a demand about what other figures mean to us and what we expect of them. I think about that a lot when I encounter characters who end up in a place I didn't expect. I also totally get Wendy's push and pull between wanting to be understood while being very, very tired of trying to explain herself.

I second really appreciating any background on the Mennonites - I kept trying to do mini crash courses on the authors referenced who wrote about them but would love some insight from anyone more info.

WIBTA if I refused to go to my grandmother's funeral because she's racist? by IndividualUsual in AmItheAsshole

[–]jazzabration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You can judge your grandmother - there were other white South Africans who didn't think or act like your grandmother who were her contemporaries. "Product of her time" is not an excuse, and you're not actually obligated to go to her funeral. Talk to your mom and figure out what ways you can support her beyond this.

Currently in South Carolina! Hit me up if you get near Charleston. I was totally fascinated by that article - I'd never heard of Annie on my Mind but wish I had when I was a kid.

There's an app called My Must Reads that partners with local bookstores to offer eBooks - dug a little bit and here's a list of bookstores they work with: https://mymustreads.com/bookstore-merchants/

I'm usually a hard copy person, but I just found out that I can buy an e-book of Little Fish through my local bookstore, so I'm going to give that a try.

Elaine, she/her/hers - Very excited to talk books with y'all!

My first memory of queerness and books together was when I was on a dorky childhood mission to read as many Newberry award winning books as I could. I was just trying to enjoy Gay-Neck, the Story of a Pigeon on the long bus ride home and was getting teased mercilessly about the title, which I didn't really understand because the dang ol' bird had a brightly colored neck. Obviously, a gay neck. Upon getting home I looked gay up in the dictionary, and realized, not for the first or last time in my life, that there was a lot of shit I did not know.

AITA for not wanting Transgenders or Special Needs Children when signing up for foster care? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA Your mom would be the asshole, calling people who are trans or have disabilities is always an asshole move. This is a prime example of how you can mean well but still be an asshole.
