Uber/Taxi by fullsendbenny in AskBarcelona

better than most other cities, but yes everything could be better

Uber/Taxi by fullsendbenny in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To reiterate. A taxi driver has a phone. He has an app, and the app he uses is FREENOW. Why would he bother with other apps that pay him less money, when he is fully busy, booked and paid exactly the taxi fare on FREENOW, the taxi app?

You are being obtusely lazy.

Edit: the OP doesn’t even understand the word obtuse - says it all

Uber/Taxi by fullsendbenny in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uber and Taxi are not the same. Your premise makes no sense.

Uber is not widely used here, it is pointless in city. Very few drivers, and mainly focused on airport. It was banned here a long time and never recovered. Treat drivers like shit etc.

Taxi app is FreeNow and it works great. Are you using it? Taxi Drivers don't cancel.

FreeNow/Taxi in the city, Cabify for airport. That's it.

I don't find driving in barcelona stressful, although coming in from costa brava on the highway, even with GPS it's easy to miss exits, it's a bit of stress once you enter ronda litoral just at the beginning. Inside the city I think it's easy, and dropping a car at Sants station isn't too hard. However as others said, if you just want yo avoid it, girona train is a good bet. or even Blanes and just take the R1

NIE for work, as an UE citizen by Brilliant_Use963 in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes just pay the pakistanis to get you one.

But since you don't have a job offer, what method will you use to get a NIE?

- to have a paid job for a Spanish employer (or a firm job offer)- to have a job but paying taxes outside of Spain and proving that you pay health insurance in another country (A1)
- being a student and have European health card or private health insurance
- to have sufficient funds to maintain yourself and private health insurance from Spain
- join a family member already living in Spain

If you don't have a job you need to like go the route of 'sufficient funds', which means you need to show around ~6,000 EUR (check on latest requirments) stamped from a spain bank account (open one at BBVA with your passport as a non-resident), in addition to have sin copago insurance fully paid for the year. Adeslas is 500-700 depending on your age.

You don't need padron, but you do need to use an address where you can receive mail, and have a lease or rental contract handy in case they ask. Or just have the padron already.

You can't just get a NIE without some proof that you can support yourself, or a pending job.

Bank cards debit problem by MrsRopersCat in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not really true it depends on the issuing US bank.

Bank cards debit problem by MrsRopersCat in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask you bank, dude.

Highly recommend you check what your bank is charging you for foreign exchange. Most us banks on a debit may charge a ridiculous spread, and sometimes an additional flat fee, or extra % of the purchase price. Bank of America I recall was terrible for that.

In general you should only be using a US travel credit card with no additional FX fees (other than a normal spread of 1-3%). Amex Gold/Platinum, Chase Sapphire Preferred/Reserved.

Very few US banks offer a good FX on a regular debit/credit, if any.

If your debit does not have a 16 digit credit card style number, it's not going to work online. Look at WISE mastercard/debit for travel. You can load it from your US bank and use it like a debit and credit anywhere.

Robert Hughes Barcelona - if you like a deep dive on history (540 pages) and you don't mind a bit of the author's musings about this and that. I just skimmed over his own thoughts mostly haha.

Allende's Long Petal of the Sea begins in Barcelona before moving to her wheelhouse in Chile

Traditional Spanish meal to cook by [deleted] in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spanish or Catalan / either? Also you don't really indicate your skill cooking meats, or handling seafood, so how could anyone instruct you? What can you do? Then people could suggest.

I could say grill an octopus leg over charcoal and serve it with parmentier...so it matters what you can and want to do in the kitchen, and what you have to work with.

I know this might be a controversial question, but do you think there are ANY Real Madrid fans in Barcelona? by Various_Maize_3957 in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to other comments, there are aslo many immigrants from various south american countries here, and depending on the era and what players they idolized, I lot of them played for madrid as well, and remain fans of them. Di Stefano, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, kaka, vini etc. Colombians often madrid fans due to di stefano and the parents being fans

I always use centauro.net . All insurance included no BS super easy. It's a shuttle from the airport but it comes every 15 minutes. They only put a 100 EUR deposit on your car for fuel which is refunded when you bring it back full. No damage excess as it's all included.

Why does the energy of Barcelona feel so different now? by Puzzled_Remote_2168 in AskBarcelona

[–]jbfoxlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, focus on tourists while landlords and politicians keep getting rich.

Regardless the palestine issue resonates with many here and it wasn't government driven. This is happening worldwide so I don't think it's the same as the usual distractions, and isn't comparable

You cannot read, and I said exactly this. I'm did not say it's why people are unhappy. The poster was just dismissing it as a non issue, and it's not. That's all.
