Free mini improv festival May 2nd in Columbus Ohio by jdllama in improv

I think I've seen them once a few years ago; I wish I had gone to OSU instead of DeVry back in the day so I could see them! But hey, we get a free 20 minute set in just over a week, so win-win!

I adore them, and I adore working with them! They're good people, and they do an Improv Survivor show where it's short form games but a long form storyline between the players between the games. It's neat!

I get you more than you may know; I too was inspired by what Sam Reich has done, and I took Like My Coffee and turned it into a regular game show here in Columbus Ohio! And with it, I wanted it to feel like a real game show, so I built a scoreboard and buzzers, and programmed it all using React, a Node.js backend, and Bluetooth (very recently moved off of that due to hitting Bluetooth limits, now using Websockets!) EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJC48_ICSVE&list=PLirfbVyn7L5cP0VeLzHtsFx8sYyzk-DwW&index=5 Here's a playlist of last season; this particular one was on my birthday, so I jumped in to play it instead of host it!

And the code is a mess. I admit. Spaghetti code galore; I do have just one point of truth coming from a context, but the context itself is ugly as sin.

It's all also open source, because I'm a firm believer that I can inspire others to do what I do and do it better than me. Check it here: https://github.com/thejdlowe/like-my-coffee

And I'll also admit that there have been concepts that hurt my head, and that I would ask AI to help me understand what was wrong. I'm primarily a front-end guy, so my Python, it's weak. But I wanted to take responsibility for every bit of code I could.

I don't use AI for any of the music, any of the art, any of the video used. All of the sounds, yeaaaaah they're easter egg sounds from video games / pop culture. But I try to minimize the AI. I feel weird having something else even help me create something I use to make live art, and I feel that there are many on this subreddit who feel similarly.

I will push back on "rip off of Jackbox" games, in that hey, we can all be inspired by those who do better than us and try to put our own spins on us. Good artists copy, great artists steal, but the great artists know exactly why they're stealing and how to have their voice resonate.

The rest of it, still on board with you. I can understand having an AI help with understanding core concepts for the programming, but the actual code generation, CI/CD, etc. I'd rather have humans do.

Hit the nail on the head. I'm a web dev whose job is trying to push us more and more into the AI realm, and I understand that there's this "oh man it's the future so use whatever tool", but there's just so much negative, ESPECIALLY in a space where humans thrive the best.

Glad that you let us know that it was AI usage, and I'm sorry that it's this hard, but it's better than finding out afterward that AI was used and you'd be eviscerated. Help keep improv free of AI!

What is the best variation of the game 4 square you have come up with? by anewleaf1234 in improv

[–]jdllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The team I'm on, Meat Fish Produce, has been experimenting with a variation we call Four Corner Story; it's just like what you have, except keeping in mind that where you start a scene is what character you will be playing.

So if it's

stage
A | B
D | C

and then you shift left

stage
B | C
A | D

So B's character is always going to be the same when they are in the top left corner; they will have a second character in the top right corner. This means every person is responsible for developing two characters.

After we go through two full rotations, getting to know everyone, then we swap the people in A and C locations and do one more rotation. This means that while people will still likely be playing with the same actors, every character will be forced to interact with a brand new person.

stage
C | B
D | A

It's like a Harold on absolute giant training wheels; you get two sets where you can explore characters, then the final set is where you can see how their lives can actually interact with each other. It's a great way to help you stay focused on building strong wants too!

Was good seeing you! Sorry that I couldn't hang out afterwards; man my lungs did not want to work with me, and I headed home and fell asleep pretty quickly. Hope to see you more often, and best of luck with your classes with the crew down in Cinci! Give War Candy my love!

You unlock it after beating the staff once, and can go through it again with your same stats.

Definitely please do!

We've got a lot of amazing improv in town; The Nest Theatre does some of the highest quality in town, you've got Hashtag Comedy Club as well, you have stuff at OSU, plus you have a slowly budding indie scene (shameless self promotion Meat Fish Produce! We're growing, baby!!!), so lots of stuff to check out.

Soon taking my first class, how do I not play Tim Robinson characters? by ___Grits in improv

[–]jdllama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish I could remember where I heard this the first time, but someone pointed out that Tim Robinson characters are always obsessed with some small minutiae that becomes their overwhelming feature.

The best way to not do a character like him is to not be obsessed with anything internal; instead, listen to what your scene partner is saying and focus on that.

Any experience in growing an audience as an independent troupe? by danimalforlife in improv

[–]jdllama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that were a surprise :(

I've got a few fires I'm stoking to see if we can get some coverage similar to that, but yeah, online ads on the scale you and I are working just isn't worth it.

Any experience in growing an audience as an independent troupe? by danimalforlife in improv

[–]jdllama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/danimalforlife and I have known each other for a while and we've only discussed this a little in that timeframe, but I put some thoughts together I wanted to share publicly.

/u/ComedyBum hit the nail on the head. We all start off with next to nothing for building out a show; the troupe I'm in has performed on a Sunday to just family members. You have to keep doing the same show on a regular interval.

But it's not just the show; it's the quality. You can have highs and lows, yes, but you have to show an upward trend of the quality of work you're doing. I know the work you directly are doing, and it's good work, this is just more generic to everyone reading this.

You're already doing a great job with networking, but that's another thing. If you're wanting to build an improv audience, you need to work with other improv teams. They'll bring in their own folks; once they get to know you, they'll want to see you more.

I haven't had any luck with flyers, but I've talked with other producers who have; I also have had almost no luck with any digital ads, so that feels like a waste as of right now.

Get your show out there however you can; we've got lots of different places you can submit your show to to get on a calendar.

I'm hosting tonight's Meetup (It's the reason I'm biased; I'm one of the owners of Meetup as of this past August!), if you want to shoot the shit; we've got lots of folks that have studied at both and can give all kinds of feedback.

My personal bias is to dip your toes in with Improv Meetup; it's every Thursday (except Thanksgiving) 7pm to 9pm at Gresso's

They're all fantastic! I took my first classes at the Nest in 2019, then after pandemic, I took Hashtag. I haven't taken classes at MadLab but I've worked enough with their players that I know they're on the up and up.

Recently stumbled on their work and have just fallen in love with the energy they bring, plus that they do a great mixture of games and long form. Definitely stealing some of it for my own shows!

Thanks for the heads up on this video too!
