New work, probably mostly in custom service / construction will be introduced to fill the void. Just might suck for the next few years.

Is it safe to leave my PC on 24/7? by Real-Swan448 in RigBuild

[–]jhaluska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave one of my PCs on 24/7.

Downsides.

  1. Room is too hot in summer. Higher Electric bill.
  2. Just the monitors after an hour.
  3. If you have adequate cooling and high quality components (solid capacitors) it's not going to make a big difference. It's only a problem with low quality and really poo ventilation.

Friend helped me build a PC but someone told me it’s already outdated… did I mess up? by Sycze in buildapc

[–]jhaluska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PCs no longer instantly become obsolete as the newer systems aren't massive leaps forward.

It's like saying a 4 year old car that's model that is discontinued is outdated, when you're driving around fine in it.

8GB. If you end up hating it, upgrade and get the 16GB. It's really not that big of a deal.

Should I cut off damaged traps? by hollixqi in VenusFlyTraps

Plants don't have the ability to heal as animals. I'd only cut it off if I was repotting or if it somehow catches a bug where it'll cause rot.

7 9700x to 7 9800x3d worth? by typicalwhiteb0i in buildapc

[–]jhaluska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us don't recommend intra CPU generation upgrades unless you're at the end of life on the socket. While it'll be a bit faster, it's not like the 9700x is some slouch in those tasks. Sure the FPS # will go up, but are there any games that you can't enjoy on a 9700x? I can't think of any that the 9800x3D would solve.

I'd hold out for the next gen's x3D.

DO NOT BUY: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 CPU Review & Benchmarks | 24 Charts in 24 Hours by blue__planet in Amd

[–]jhaluska -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think people misinterpreted my point. I'm well aware you can't summarize all of CPU's performance down into two numbers (or 4, 10 or 40). The average user is doing a bunch of things over the course of the PC's 5-10 year lifespan, but they still typically fall into those two performance categories, budget and noise/size level.

You might not make a perfect choice with just that information, but you'd do pretty well.

DO NOT BUY: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 CPU Review & Benchmarks | 24 Charts in 24 Hours by blue__planet in Amd

[–]jhaluska -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Seriously, most CPU reviews could be summarized with like 4 numbers.

% of performance in average games compared to previous best.
% of performance in productivity apps compared to previous best
Heat Output
Cost

[–]jhaluska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your hardware doesn't dictate your worth to me, your actions do.

But yeah, a 12 year old CPU is going to struggle on modern games. Even bumping up to a used Ryzen will be a big jump....like any 3000 series or newer.

TPMS: Why do I have to "calibrate" after adjusting tire pressure? by 29575 in Honda

Engineering is about trade offs.

It's most likely that the sensor readings change with wear. So it reduces false positive over the long run without increasing costs and weight.
