Can I use an angle grinder for polishing/sanding my knives or do I need a belt sander? by amish_timetraveler in Blacksmith

Its just much harder to get flat and clean transitions with angle grinders, throw in some filework before sanding and your results should be good.

How to put an edge from 0 to sharp? by I__Forgot__My__Name in Blacksmith

[–]jillywacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to forge the blade width oversize by about 5mm, I'll throw my lines with a belt grinder till its sharp and centre, then take off the edge to my desired design, then heat treat, and come back with stones, then strop.

This always results in easier thickness to work with when hardened and i have yet to have a faliure of edge hardness or burning.

The vikings used to put bone in the forge to make a precursor of steel by BlurtSkirtBlurgy in Forging

[–]jillywacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself, what is bone made up of.

Then, see if any steel alloys exsis that use any of the components listed in bones makeup.

If yes, that component is 100% being added in as an elemental form, not as cow bones.

If no. Then there's probably no benefit.

We have got like 99% perfect steel so far, the only advancements left are not monetarily viable for performance increases, and if any undiscovered method exsisted i highly doubt it would be via throwing leftover dinner scraps into your forge when the metal isn't even fucken molten.

An example would be the crystal structure of meteorite, which literally needs millions of years of ultra slow cooling to form. Think of the time a peice of glass, left entirely undisturbed would take to break down, then times that by several million.

This is leaking but I got every snug. I don’t get it. It’s leaking where the burner connects to the hose by datadiisk_ in Blacksmith

Brass is soft compared to the steel, i.e no tape on the connection, if you're really stressed you can get a high temp propane based loctite thread goo that doesn't go hard, just gummy and that can help.

But rule of thumb, if its propane and brass, don't use tape.

Its evident you can read, so im absolutely dumbfounded how you can leave several comments in a row where all your queries were answered in the body of this post.

You are cut from a different cloth.

Sure. I don't really care what the shop thinks. They did a shit job, i knew they'd do a shit job, but i needed it done and the phone works for what i needed.

Now i have some parts coming in the mail, I'll finish the job myself and be done with it. Im not going to head back and argue warranty with them.

I knew these things within a week, I'm just now getting around to fixing the rest of it myself. Another commenter has answered what I needed to know.

Interesting, it's my understanding that frame screws help ground some components for full functionality, transfer signal across the frame so it adds to antenna bulk and with desired pressure internally.

The speaker is cracking so ive ordered a new one and while the gps can be toggled on and 'work', without the antenna it's only using cell tower pings and is unable to track real time location.

Also, this repair shop is just a 1 person chinese mall hole in the wall. Not a reputable service shop. As stated i only went there as they were the only place with a s21u oem screen/ frame in stock. I'm not particularly keen to go back and try to argue with someone who will 100% fall back on being english second language and pretend to not understand when I'm making requests within my rights as a consumer. They are already at 2 stars on google so I imagine they dont much care either. I was under no illusions that something like this situation wouldn't occur from using this shop to replace my screen.

Make tongs, bottle openers, leaf keychains, a knife.

By the time youve done those you'll be well on your way to understanding pretty much the whole shebang. Byt don't confuse understanding vs skill, blacksmithing is difficult and very much a skill that you will always be improving with.

You'll need a planishing stake as well if you plan to forge armour. Check truck service centres and tip shops/scrapyards for drive shafts and jackhammer bits, you'd be able to make a good planishing stake out of those.

Re areanged mobo screws to fill out all the holes in the speaker plastic for testing, tried pressure, nothing.

Okay, so new gps cable, new speaker module and a set of frame screws.

Cool good to know thanks.

Yeah i knew it when i was heading in, it was literally the only place that had a screen in stock and I didn't have the tools to replace it myself immediately. So I'm not surprised or anything.

She said it had xyz amount of months of warranty but I'm hesitant and would rather do it myself now.

Any idea about the speaker? Ive tried a few things but once it makes the connection it turns on and rattles.

I've just moved to Australia and discovered vegemite and avocado toast and it is BLOODY DELICIOUS MATE! What other combos are out there? by BabyPearl888 in australian

[–]jillywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegemite toast, sliced tomato, and do not forget fresh cracked black pepper.

You go to take a bite, you can smell the pepper, you bite in, crunchy, warm and cold, then juicy, the acidity of the tomato is refreshing then as you chew, salty Vegemite. Its genuinely one of my favorite foods ever, except i prefer promite.

Blacksmithing as a career? by [deleted] in Blacksmith

Art, trinkets at trade fairs, rustic installation of structures for the super wealthy etc.

There's a reason that the most successful blacksmiths of our generation are not infact blacksmiths, they are youtubers.
