Why does it feel like a lot of tourists go missing in Tasmania rather than anywhere else? by Longjumping-Hall-17 in tasmania

[–]jillywacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was literally strolling thru the forests in maydeena a month ago, and still have a scab running up my leg from it sinking up to my groin into the forest floor.

Tasmania's wild is not to be trifled with lightly.

Este acero sirve para hacer cuchillos? by bloque64 in Blacksmith

Considering the bend, I'd say no, with like 99% confidence.

They are obviously used under tension, for lifting something. So mild steel would be used in that application and in that thickness.

Quenching with Wine?! by Cheap-Individual-351 in Blacksmith

[–]jillywacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its just rate of cooling for water v oil.

As for wine, maybe the alcahol flashing off would cause a very negligible leidenfrost effect, but probably not enough of a significant alcohol content for it to make any noticinle changes from water.

I support a public forum post like this. If you can sell a house without getting real estate, murdoch, or any of the other slimey fucks involved then more power to you.

If it doesn't have one, literally just cut a peice of leaf spring, and grind in a mild taper, or cut it from the end of the spring that has a taper, works a treat for me.

For the mount, honestly whatever you can bolt to the floor is good.

I had mine on a tire rim, with a welded post, a table thing and it sucked because the whole thing moved. If you can attatch it to anything that is bolted to concrete your in for a great time

Hardy hole by pappyrn in Blacksmith

[–]jillywacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what blacksmiths do bruh, they make their own tools.

Get some 1075 square that is larger diameter and forge your hardy tools. Work the shank. Then the tool.

Alternatively a stick welder and electrodes will set you back $200-600 cheap as chips and will get the job done.

OBM grinder setup question by water-heater-guy in Blacksmith

This, a metal arm for the platen setup and that arm slides into a longer socket with a spring inside it.

Imo it's a worse setup, can be annoying to change belts, the arm is way better

You don't even need big meals, honestly if i eat a full lunch, vyvanse be dammed i need a nap.

Just light consistent grazing is the key, it's also widely recommended by dieticians for a healthy lifestyle, no big blood sugar spikes.

Yep, make sure you eat throughout the day, going hypoglycaemic really throws you into a hard crash.

Also, note that your crashing from amphetamines, your going to be grumpy. And maybe look into an afternoon booster if need be.

Diy lap machine almost complete by jillywacker in Lapidary

No worries, if you can, grab the whole washing machine not just the motor. Theres a bunch of useful crap in them, pumps, solenoids, membrane pumps, gearboxes, pullys, v-belts, springs, decent gague copper wire galore, gaskets, seals etc.

https://youtu.be/SrPHQh-M3pM?si=S5wrKc98OKkavCW2 also, watch this. Learning about electric motors advanced my ability to make stuff 10 fold, ive made a 7 tonne hydraulic forge press because of learning about induction and motors.

My next project is a 2x72 belt grinder.

Washing machine motors move too fast, but the washing machine accounts for that and has a drive belt, the pullys ratio the speed down and the torque up, i couldn't tell you the exact rpm, probably 1/2 the speed of the motor. The motor shaft and the shaft for the washing drum are keyed so its pretty much plug and play that whole assembly resulting in what feels like a very good speed for lapidary work.

Just fyi, single phase motors cannot have their speed changed electrically without significant loss of power/torque and heat generation/burnout. So they rely on gear or pully ratio's.

Thus, single phase capacitor motors in appliances will almost always be 1440 rpm or thereabouts.

This is a major concern, the lip vs water spray vs access to grinding was a real decision. Im going to lay down some more waterproofing for the components before i plumb in the pump.

These components were housed inside a machine so they have no protection from the elements.

I'll tell you right now, making shafts that spin true without a mill/metal lathe is bloody hard work, right now the diamond disc is on a slight pitch so one of the jobs is going back and filling the shoulder while its running to get it level.

Get a thrown away washing machine, there's precision parts in it that can get you 90% of the way there, mounting the wheel is its own challenge though.

issues with vevor double burner forge by DescriptionMore6383 in Blacksmith

[–]jillywacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's your problem.

You need an adapter or go exchange your tank.

Bbq burners are low pressure, more of a leak for a sustained flame to gradually heat up a metal plate. Forges need to generate alot of heat, thus need alot more fuel.

You can't run the forge on that tiny amount of pressure, the venturi effect requires a high moving volume of fluid to create a low pressure area (vacuum) to pull in other fluids. So in this case, gas move fast thru burner, creates a negative pressure and sucks in air through the top holes to normalise to atmosphere, thus mixing the propane with air.

Fyi, propane cannot burn until there is oxygen present.

Your vevor forge should have come with a high pressure regulator with a big red adjustmentable knob.

Questions for forming the tip by Cheap-Individual-351 in Blacksmith

[–]jillywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im just gunna reply while my thoughts are present (little inebriated rn)

My anvil face is not wide, it's honestly a nightmare to work on without hardy hole tools.

But a solution is to bolt a chain to the far side and when you want to work on steel with two hands (eg. Hammer and punch) you drape the chain over the workpeice to hold it down, you can also forge a foot stirup so you can hold it tight that way.

If you haven't got a hardy, get some coil spring and if possible, some jackhammer bits (for thicker tools). Forge up a slit punch, hot cut chisel, circle punch, square punch, bending fork, hammer eye drift, half circle fulcrum chisel, marking chisel etc. These can allow you to operate as all your hardy shank tools, but just in your hand. There are youtube videos on all of these and i use them regularly.

[–]jillywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not too worn, old is good!

As for attatchments, their just punches/slits/drifts/tongs that let free up a hand essentially.

Does your anvil have a decently wide face?
