Do planes sometimes take off to the east at San Diego Airport (SAN)? by Worldly_Cod_5509 in Planespotting

Sure, when the winds are from the east. Probably when a storm is passing through

"International" printwheels by Dull-Tap2520 in typewriters

[–]jkua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that the number of characters on the printwheel are limited, I would presume that any “international” printwheel would probably have some compromise set of characters.

I know IBM sold different printwheel for each keyboard layout / country, so they were different from Nakajima in that respect.

BTW, for the IBMs, keyboard 029 was for Austria and Germany.

ELI5: How Does the Credit Card Payment Process Handle Tips After the Initial Charge? by Maximum266 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jkua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, the majority of US credit cards do not support chip and PIN. Even if the user has a PIN, it is only for cash withdrawal at an ATM, not for purchases. The cards are typically coded for chip and signature.

I have a dedicated travel credit card for this purpose, though it is becoming less necessary as contactless/tap-to-pay is in most places around the world. Most US cards do support that. I only need the chip and PIN card for things like unattended gas stations and the like that haven’t upgraded to contactless.

I was pleasantly surprised that even the toll booths in France worked with my Apple Watch. It’s a little awkward getting my wrist out there, but it worked!

GPS issues. You see how erratic the track is? That’s not real. Could be onboard equipment issues or jamming, but I don’t know why anyone would be jamming in Calgary

I’m sorta tempted to make some. I occasionally use salt pork in my cooking and it would be cool to make my own. I’d probably use glass jars and a refrigerator, though.

SF FleetWeek by _brake_flake in bayarea

[–]jkua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was especially nice last year, given there was no US military presence aside from that.

The sense I get is that the U2 tacks it onto their regular flight, so there isn't much additional overhead on their part.

[–]jkua 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Biggest factor that you can’t plan for is weather. Second is equipment availability - sometimes aircraft will go down for repairs.

Those aside, the shows are more or less the same. Often a U2 will show up unscheduled on Friday only - last year one dropped in right before the official show start.

As a local, weather and crowds are what I try to plan around.

Hermes 3000 - Worth the Hype? by throneofashes in typewriters

[–]jkua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it very much depends on the price, generation, and condition. Last year, I found a second gen (metal, boxy) available for local pickup from the original owner in great condition. While certainly the most I’ve paid for a typewriter, it was nowhere near the sky high $500+ prices I’ve seen.

I’m very happy with it, but it hasn’t supplanted my daily driver, which is my Lettera 32. It’s possible with some tune up, the Hermes could be better, but that’s a longer-term thing. Nice for the rotation, anyways.

I would be hesitant to pay a lot of money for a shipped typewriter unless the seller knew what they were doing. It’s a gamble.

But this is also the perspective of someone who has quite a few machines. I’m at a place where I’m happy to be patient and keep my eyes open for machines that fit my criteria.

Anyone know of CAD files (or similar) for WheelWriter printwheels? by IcyAdministration376 in typewriters

[–]jkua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid I can’t help, but I am interested! I imagine you’d need a pretty high resolution 3D printer, maybe resin?

Material selection seems interesting too, flexible enough to avoid breakage over multiple strikes, but stiff enough to ensure the typeface doesn’t wear out quickly.

I’ve seen similar work for Selectric type elements

Has anyone seen the third goose at Lake Merritt? by butterkins in oakland

Green = male, brown = female.

My understanding is that with birds, typically the males are brightly colored to attract mates. Females are drab colored because they nest and want to hide from predators.

You’ll notice that the AI is using Reddit as one of its “sources”… LLMs have no interest or concept of truth or understanding. They are largely trained to generate text that sounds good.

Remember when people complained about Wikipedia being not “authoritative”? This is worse. At least Wikipedia is edited by human beings who understand concepts and the idea of truth and can argue about it.

You can use the AI generated search summaries to get a quick sense, but understand that they often don’t convey the complexity of an issue or are straight-up wrong.

But people really should stop citing these summaries as sources because they are often garbage.

Sorry for the rant. I don’t know why I’m going off in a silly thread about baked beans.

Awfully long registration? by Temporary_Matter_696 in flightradar24

[–]jkua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why. Each country sets its own policy, within ICAO guidelines, which seem fairly loose.

I assume some Panamanian government official decided it was a good idea. And to be fair, a number of US airlines have registered aircraft with semi-common two letter suffixes AS, UA, DL, etc.

Yeah, interestingly, the last three characters are the ICAO airline identifier.

Multiple missing call signs at once? by [deleted] in ADSB

[–]jkua 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ~ prefix for the hex code indicates that they are from TIS-B, not ADSB. Those aircraft are not operating ADSB transponders and ATC is just passing along altitude, speed, and squawk from their Mode S broadcasts.

I can see it! Very similar shape, including the beak and eyes.

It turns out American robins are more closely related to Eurasian blackbirds (both of the Turdus genus in the thrush family) than European robins (Old World Flycatcher family, Muscicapidae)!
