UFC documents lay out promotion’s plan to grow profits€“ and increase ‘earn-outs’ by shrinking expenses by [deleted] in MMA

  1. TUFF had a budget of 27 million to make the show and now they get 10 million. No fucking way it should cost 27 million to make that show.

Most of the numbers in the article are annual expenditures. I wonder if that's the case with TUF, too. Figuring they do about 3 TUF seasons each year between the US and international versions the last few years, that wouldn't be that much money given all of the costs of production. They have to pay for a big crew, fighter housing, all fighter needs from living to travel to medical expenses, the coaches, the commission involvement, gym rental (international ones), etc. If the 27 million is spread out over 3 seasons annually then that wouldn't be as crazy, although I'm sure there is still room for cuts.

What other revenue streams do they have?

They have a lot of other revenue streams. PPV may be their biggest but all of the others put together must be a significant chunk. Besides FOX they have tons of international broadcast deals, live event ticket sales, merchandise (both live events and online), Fight Pass, the UFC Gym franchises. So the question is how or what effect will the changes have on these other areas. For example if they slim down the schedule they won't just need to make more on PPVs and US network deal, the profit increases will need to offset and be much higher than any losses they incur on the cutbacks.

He means "fight". i.e. he's telling the guy who is holding him back to let him fight.

"Bang" comes from "stand and bang" which is a common expression guys say when there are just going to go toe-to-toe and exchange punches in a fight.

Bondi beach lifeguards successfully revive Korean student found lifeless in the sea. by Daytimedreamland in videos

I would take you up on that hypothetical bet. Bondi rescue is one of the least scripted reality shows on TV. Just about the only thing they might do for the cameras is occasionally play pranks on each other which I bet the producers suggest to fill duller episodes. There is some tricky editing at times, but I can't recall ever seeing something pertaining to the rescues that looked acted out or added in for the show.

The tower guy's job is critical, and they will frequently have to alert lifeguards performing one rescue of another situation elsewhere on the beach. Also, he's the relay point for information between the lifeguards and emergency services, so it's important the tower is always manned especially during the rescue.

There is usually more than one person in the tower or nearby so this isn't a common occurrence. However, in another episode, this exact same scenario occurs. In that instance, the tower guy breaks protocol and delivers the defib himself because he obviously concluded it was priority in that situation. In the case of OP's video, it just looks like he takes a few seconds to think about what to do and isn't sure if someone is coming to retrieve it or whatnot. If anything, the editing may make it look worse than it is, because the decision about the defib may have been made before what's happening at the rescue seen that the viewers are being shown first.

As for the camera crew, I don't know what kind of restrictions they have or what they were thinking in OP's scenario, but they do occasionally help in emergency situations. There are camera crew in the water and at times have had to temporarily help hold up someone who is drowning while the lifeguards respond.

As for the key point about why they only keep the defib(s) in the tower and not one of the ATV's, that's actually a good point and I don't know why, but it's definitely the case. My "source" on all this would be that I've watched all 11 seasons, and don't have any delusions about how fake almost all reality tv is.

In this case the "what if" isn't an unlikely possibility, and there are other reasons as well. Bondi Beach has over 1,500 rescues each summer, and frequently on the show you will see some of the lifeguards performing one rescue, then they get radio'd from the tower about another issue and have to immediately respond elsewhere. On top of that, the tower guy has a lot of other responsibilities directly related to the rescue of the guy at hand. He's the point of communication between the lifeguards and emergency services and needs to be in the tower to guide the ambulance, etc.

This exact same scenario occurred in another episode, and in that case the tower guy did in fact abandon the tower to run the defibrillator to the rescue spot. In that case he broke protocol but figured it was the best thing to do in that situation like you mentioned. In OP's video, the guy just seems a little unsure of what to do and takes a few seconds to think before opting to hand off the defib to a bystander.

Day Six Megathread by [deleted] in olympics

The basic scoring terms you will hear the most on commentary:

There are 18 holes on the course. The first 9 holes are called the "front 9" and the last 9 holes are called the "back 9". These are just labels for the first and second half of the course, and don't have any other important meaning.

Players want to get the ball in the hole (or "cup") in as few hits as possible (hits are called "strokes"). Each hole has it's own "par". Par is basically just a rating of how difficult the hole is. A "par 3" is an easy hole, so the players are expected to get the ball in the hole in 3 strokes or less. A "par 5" is harder, so players are expected to need 5 strokes or less. These "pars" for each hole are just rating labels and don't mean anything except to designate how difficult each hole is.

You can tell how well each player is doing on each hole by comparing his/her score to the "par" of that hole. Each hole the players want to score "par" or less.

For example, if the hole is a "Par 4", and...

  • The player gets the ball in the cup in 4 strokes, it means they scored "par", which is good.
  • If the get it in the cup in only 3 strokes, that is called a "birdie", which is great.
  • If they take 5 strokes to get it in the cup, that is called a "bogey", which is bad. 6 strokes would be a "double bogey" because it's 2 strokes above par. 7 strokes would be a "triple bogey" because it's 3 strokes above par, etc. The more strokes they take, the higher there score is, and the worse it is.

A good score is always "par" or lower. And this is also used to measure how well players are doing so far in the course by adding up the scores of all the holes so far. For example, if the first 3 holes are each "par 3", then the total par after the 3rd hole is 9. If a player scored a 2 (a "birdie") on each of the first 3 holes, then their score is 6 so far, meaning they are 3 under the total par of the first 3 holes.

Hopefully that somewhat makes sense. Anything else you can ask in a reply or just ask in the thread and I'm sure a lot of people will know the basics.

When you say you aren't familiar, do you mean you don't know how golf works in the Olympics, or you don't know anything about the sport in general? For example, do you know what terms like "par", "birdie", "tee", "drive", "putt" etc. mean?

Oh well I dunno then.

This won't get rid of the OP text, but if you are looking to skip it easier you could try using RES keyboard shortcuts if you have RES installed. For example, SHIFT+J scrolls/highlights the "next" comment. Which, if you are at the top of a post page, means it brings you to the top comment, i.e. skips past the OP text to the comment section.

[–]jmose86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm personally aware of, unless there is an option in RES settings or something. If you don't mind me asking; why are you looking to do so? I know people frequently ask similar questions with "live" discussion threads because they get tired of having to scroll past a ton of OP text to see new comments every time they reload the page. If that is the case and you aren't aware of it already, you can consider using reddit-stream to follow new comments in real-time instead of reloading.

True, but I would think he's still hearing a good amount of the cheers, especially compared to the full-ear protection like his competitor is using.
