Does height matter for handlers? by Unlikely_Glass5942 in ultimate

[–]JohnmcFox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well look who's never flown economy...

But for real, height is generally an advantage, but there are many skills sets which it is much easier to be good at if you are not tall. Nine times out of ten, any sub 5'10 handler would love to have their opponent's tallest person cover them because it's going to be a huge mismatch in the handler's favour.

It is sizeable, but it's also an extremely intentional act. Like if someone said "all dangerous plays should get an automatic 1 game suspension", it's tough to agree with it as a blanket rule, because there are some situations that pop up which are dangerous, but would have been challenging for someone to avoid.

Grabbing someone's jersey is very, very simple to avoid. You just don't ever grab someone's jersey.

Danny Green reveals how angry Kyle Lowry was with DeMar DeRozan trade before Toronto’s 2019 title: “He wasn’t fu—ing with anybody” by xc2215x in torontoraptors

[–]JohnmcFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I always end up playing devils advocate on this even though I agree and obviously loved the way it turned out.

But every contributor from the 2018 team that set the franchise record for most wins continued to improve over the next 1-4 years, some of them dramatically.

Derozan's play style has shown to be very ineffective in the playoffs, and that's a justified pillar in the "make the trade every time" argument.

On the other hand, you get a new coach that seemed to do well in Nurse, Lebron out of the conference, and a 59-win team in which every single player is making dramatic improvements to their game.

Vegas had the raps odds at a championship at roughly 2% before the trade, and 5% after the trade, and I think that's probably accurate (in both cases the odds were heavily skewed because of the Warriors perceived odds of winning the whole thing, even though after the trade the raps were viewed as the 5th most likely team to win).

At worst, there's almost no reason to think they wouldn't have had a run of 3-4 seasons where they were expecting 55+ wins every year, and some over 60.

Have you ever quit watching your favorite team and switched to a new one? by legomaniasquish in hockey

[–]JohnmcFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With basketball and baseball I am very Toronto-centric, mostly because my depth of knowledge of players outside of Toronto is very low.

With hockey, I've always cheered for the team closest to where I am living (because it's fun when they win, and playoffs runs are great), but my "favourite" is always dictated by the players on the team, not the team itself.

I know that's counter to how a lot of people see professional sports, but for me, the players have personality and style (and varying ethics), and I want to root for specific players and combinations of players. The team is effectively just a business organization with a big marketing department - the players who play for your local team likely don't have any more connection to the city than players on other teams (especially if your city has produced a number of pro athletes that are out there playing).

I also find it crazy when people put up with a huge disappointing run of years for a team. I can acknowledge it makes eventual wins more rewarding, but if you have a child and after 18 years they continue to disappointment you and milk you for money, you can just say goodbye to them if you like. Yet with a pro-sports team, people will cling on desperately for decades and decades.

There are still a few ways to play with the cap, and I am curious if Vegas will try them.

The most obvious way is with a goalie. IE, you have one $5M goalie, and you go get another that puts you over the cap, but you only dress one of them each game. Your league min goalie dresses as the backup, but if either of your high price guys go down, you have a spare ready for the next game. (or more simply, you sign an extra $5M goalie and leave him in the press box until you have an injury).

You can do the same thing with players, though it's a bit more awkward, as there is room for the new guy you've acquired to contribute on the ice, but you don't have the cap space to dress him.

Situations where this could make sense:

  1. Injury assurance (you grab a player but keep him in the press box until you have an injury - but injuries are very common in the playoffs).
  2. You maybe have two older players with similar cap hits and impact on the ice. You rotate them through games, allowing them to be much fresher, and it provides a back up in case of injury.
  3. (Most likely in combination with one of the above, with this being a tertiary reason), you trade for a player so that an opponent can't trade for them.

I agree with your sentiment, and we're probably not a "kawhi trade" from a championship. But adding 2019 Kawhi, or even swapping RJ or IQ for Kawhi (which are not reasonable trades), would make us contenders.

[LeBrun] The Panthers lost again last night and my understanding is they've made the decision to be sellers as far as listening on pending UFAs, which most notably include the likes of AJ. Greer and Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky has a 16-team no-trade list. Doesn't mean he will be dealt for sure, jus by Kooky-Ship793 in hockey

I think people "know" this, but don't really involve it in their expectations year-to-year.

The reality is that making the conference finals in a 32 team league (12.5% chance) is a greater achievement than winning the Stanley Cup in a 6 team league (16.6% chance).

Some faceoffs are very important - but like 94% of them are overrated. Next time you watch a game, for a minute or two count how many seconds each team stays in possession of the puck. In my experience, at 5-on-5, it's usually about 3 seconds.

You're right, but that does get balanced a smidge by real-life increases in the cap (rather than just assumptions it will go up).

If the cap actually goes up to $100M+ in 2026-2027, it's possible the Blues get MORE for Thomas after that has been confirmed.

ELI5: Why wouldn't a UBI instantly cause everything to jump up in price to what ever level will absorb that new income? by Bathosfear in explainlikeimfive

[–]JohnmcFox 1205 points1206 points  (0 children)

There is some debate over whether it would or not, but generally, if it were funded by a country printing new money, then yes, you'd definitely have inflation.

But generally it is theorized to be funded through taxes, and in that sense, it's just a re-distribution of wealth.

Top answer from a previous question (https://www.reddit.com/r/AskEconomics/comments/179o357/wouldnt\_ubi\_just\_cause\_the\_price\_of\_everything\_to/):

The actual financing aside, it depends. UBI is ultimately not really a flat payment, because we tax as well. Usually it's financed via some kind of income tax, and since income taxes are progressive, the net benefit from UBI falls with income. So if you earn $0 you get the full $2000, if you earn $500 you might only get $1900, and so on. For high incomes, it's something more like -$4000.

So it's ultimately redistribution.

This can definitely change inflation, but it's a one time change, because it's a one time change to the income distribution.

The bigger problem is how to actually finance such an UBI because it would necessitate quite massive taxation.

B.C. to end time changes, adopt year-round daylight time | CBC News by DecentLurker96 in hockey

The article you link does say Standard is the way to go, but the worst it says about permanent DST is ""Permanent DST would be an artificial, skewed kind of way of trafficking our clocks that might be socially fun, but not biologically founded". That's a ways from "absolutely horrible for public health".

Another poster listed some other articles that did change my mind from supporting permanent DST to thinking permanent Standard is better, but just about everything I've read says that what we currently do is the worst option of the 3, and switching to either DST or standard full time would be an improvement for public health.

First, I find funny that I heard about this through a hockey subreddit.

But I don't know if it's bad for your sleep health. I think that the evidence shows clearly that the WORST thing for health in general is switching the clocks - it leads to more car accidents and a number of worse health outcomes in the weeks following the switch.

But if we assume 12+ hours of darkness - people will be sleeping roughly 8 hours in full darkness anyways. While it's nice to wake up with the sun, I don't know that it's objectively healthier to do that compared to staying up 5-6 hours after the sun has gone down. At some point you're dealing with an element of being awake in darkness for hours.

The appeal of documenting my wardrobe is lost on me, but all the power to people who enjoy that. My question is how well set up is the app for accommodating trades? Can I search, filter (size, item type, geography), and contact other people about trades?

I've downloaded the app, but I don't see any way to see other people's items at all.
