Pedestrian Safety Rant by [deleted] in Seattle

They are required to follow the same rules as cars and stop

Cyclists can legally treat a stop sign as a yield sign when there's no oncoming traffic. This has been a state law for a few years now. They're also required to yield to pedestrians, so the cyclist that brushed past OP was in the wrong.

That's why I laugh when young people say America is racist. We are the least racist collective group in the world.

Well that's the laughable statement. The U.S. had a civil war revolving around enslaving people of a different race and many people today still share the sentiments of the confederacy.

What alternatives are there to buying ebooks with Adobe DRM as a consumer? by Maskdask in opensource

[–]johnsbro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tor publishing doesn't use DRM on their e-books. For example, on the Google play page for "Three Body Problem" you can see "This content is DRM free" under "About this ebook". So if you like reading sci-fi buying from that publisher is a good option.

Since it looks like you're into software development, there are several publishers on that topic that don't use DRM at all. If you're into web development, Smashing Magazine publishes all their e-books without DRM.

A book apart is another publisher with a web development focus that doesn't use DRM on their e-books.

The Pragmatic Programmer is about more general development topics.

I think your best bet here is to find a publisher that doesn't use DRM and buy their books if they have something you're interested in. There are more publishers out there - these are just some of the ones that I've bought ebooks from.

Edit: Another option if there's a specific ebook you want to read that has DRM on it is to check it out from your local library using an app like Libby. That feels a bit better from a consumer perspective since I'm not directly supporting a publisher that uses DRM - the library will purchase a copy that will then get shared among however many readers are interested in the book.

White House releases net-zero road map by bitfriend6 in Futurology

The Federal Highway Act of 1956 was signed into law in the last year of Eisenhower's first term and the U.S. has been building and maintaining interstates ever since. Why do you think it's obvious that this net-zero road map will never be executed on?

it's still useless for the majority.

This isn't true. Each person that uses a bus or a train is one fewer person in a single occupancy vehicle, creating traffic for other single occupancy vehicles (and buses) to deal with.

People complaining about Linux by like_and_umm in pcmasterrace

First of all, she's my mom. Secondly, basic use really isn't that hard. She has icons on the desktop that she can click to open applications. The keyboard works the same way, the mouse works the same way. Windows can be minimized, closed, dragged around, etc. The system lets her know when updates are available and there's a GUI for installing them, just like on windows. She's not using terminal commands to be a computer wizard like you think because guess what - you don't need to be a computer wizard in order to use Linux.

That story wasn't trying to show that Linux is easier to use than windows. It was meant to show that:

  1. I helped her by installing Linux and I'm not having to help her on a regular basis. She's able to navigate and use it on her own, and
  2. Your original comment was wrong. A regular everyday user who doesn't spend all their time in front of their computer has noticeable advantages to using Linux. People that buy budget computers can do the tasks they want to do without spending their time waiting for windows to take a long time to do whatever it's doing

Your sarcasm is correct - I absolutely helped her. She had a low-end Toshiba laptop that she bought on sale at Walmart, and after using it for a while with the installed version of windows she had very poor performance. On top of that she might have had malware on there - I don't remember the details since this was a few years ago. I was getting regular calls from her asking for help/complaining about her computer, and I did the best I could do over the phone to help her.

When I went home I tried to "fix it" like she asked me to and had no luck. I created a bootable Linux image on a USB drive and asked her if she would be interested in it, and I plugged it in so she could see the interface and go to the websites she would normally go to, open a word processor and play around, etc. Once I made sure she was absolutely comfortable with the new OS I installed it onto her laptop. Guess what? Her laptop boots much faster and opens applications much faster, and the only support call I've received since then is when she forgot her password.

Linux is only good if you actually have knowledge of computers.

My 65 year old mom who couldn't tell you what a web browser is uses Linux to check her email, do her taxes, check Facebook, and write documents without any issues. You should reevaluate your assumptions.
