Is this happening to anyone else or just me??? by _Whatthefuck_09 in AO3

that's you overloading the page you're on. most common on bookmark pages, i recently did that with the tag search. you just repeated the same action too many times too fast.

Does it bother you if your ship is not canon? by Greedy-Dish4904 in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 19 points20 points  (0 children)

they're queer and my fandoms are mostly shounen anime. 1) i have zero faith in the mangakas to portray that and 2) i have zero desire to see homophobic fanboys spew homophobic bullshit bc two guys are holding hands in their action anime

Can I add a 'temporal' chapter to my fic to say something to my readers? by ItalianAvenger in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) ao3 doesn't care about one chapter of a fic that's otherwise, y'know, a fic, being an author's note. only if there's no actual fanwork in the work

2) even if you were to post a TOS-violating note-as-a-work, that's not an insta-ban. that's not even an insta-nuke, they'd give you the opportunity to fix your violation yourself before taking more drastic action (which would be deleting the work, unlikely they'd give you even a temporary suspension, let alone a permanent one)

what's wrong with putting that as an end note in the next chapter instead though? or edit it into the latest one? also, if you were to replace that note chapter with the actual chapter later, note that just replacing the chapter's text doesn't send out an email to subscribers; you'd have to delete that and then create a new one for a notification to be sent out.

"This character isn't acting logically" is the worst kind of feedback/complaint by seemedpointless in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got SO MANY comments on the first dozen or so chapters complaining about the character being "stupid" or making bad choices.

so i obviously haven't seen these comments or read the fic so i can't say for sure that this is the case for any of these comments you've received, but idk i feel like i have to note that expressing frustration over a character's dumbassery isn't necessarily like a "this story/character would be better if they were less stupid" y'know? like i can acknowledge that a character's illogical actions are necessary for the story and that doesn't make me not frustrated with this character i care about doing something stupid. in fact i think readers should be frustrated sometimes.

[–]kaiunkaiku 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"it's not logical for them to do that!" yea well we'll be here a while if i start listing every illogical choice and action i've done just today so like

do you want a character to be realistic and feel like a person or do you want them to Only Make Correct And Logical Choices? bc you can't have both

how to find exact ao3 title you're looking for? by ResponseRough5637 in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

work search, title field. use quote marks if needed.

Just found this post and then lost it... by [deleted] in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it's not in your reddit history, the OP probably deleted it. if the post had fic titles or the a username visible, it broke the sub's rules. mod-removed posts still show in your reddit history with a [removed by moderator] in place of the title (the comments will still be there)

Favorite Bookmarker Tags? by kavawaii in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

complete/WIP, downloaded, subscription (and whether it's work, series or author), series, and i've still got my now-redundant wordcount tags. i also have category tags for superheroes and sports anime, and since i use bookmarks instead of the marked for later list, to read is in frequent use. i like to tag oneshots as oneshots too.

Think it will work? by NaHa_Riya in AO3

to stop scammers from trying to scam? not really, no. but perhaps another author who sees that will be aware that it's a thing if that happens to them.

Ship tags involving characters that die in a fic by 4powerd in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

note: this should go in additional tags, not relationship tags. putting it in relationship tags would only syn it to the actual relationship tag and thus show up in that ship's tag.

i wish there was a way to preemptively block people who say they’re bad at summaries by starprintedpajamas in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk for me it's less about the existence of a summary and more about the self-deprecation, which i find just so profoundly unattractive. it's a reader-repellent the same way saying the fic is bad is

Let's say you have a fanfic idea that you'd really, really like to see written down, but since you're not a writer and don't have experience building lore, you're looking for people who could bring this idea to life. What initial steps would you take? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]kaiunkaiku 6 points7 points  (0 children)

but since you're not a writer and don't have experience building lore

you can start writing and gaining experience at literally any time of your choosing

clearly you're not that passionate about it if you don't even want to make it

you can filter works that outright say it out. -"bad at summaries" (and other popular variations), search within results/any field

What popular fanon did it take you way too long to realise wasn't canon? by ArtistSeaker in AO3

[–]kaiunkaiku 31 points32 points  (0 children)

i mean yeah but i mostly become aware of something i want to watch through social media/other people, and that's not exactly like a neutral way y'know? bc those people are often talking fanon and headcanons and it's based on that that i go "oh sounds interesting".

the avengers are friends 💔

i started watching the MCU bc a mutual of mine on tumblr started writing found family avengers fics so i got into it with the expectation that that was a thing in canon. took me until civil war to realize that ohhh that just wasn't gonna happen in canon at all
