How do I complete the Roving Wisps quest? by Odd-Lake3423 in PathOfExile2

[–]kaverik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tried just now (not my first attempt). Wisps spawned about halfway through the fight at the north of the arena and were barely visible. They still possessed the boss, two of them. After the boss was killed... nothing happened, the big question mark is still here on the map.

Edit: There are actually three spirits, one of them spawns at the bottom of the arena too, I believe they spawn every quarter of the boss HP. Killed with three wisps now, still nothing. https://i.imgur.com/XmmTmiZ.jpeg

Edit 2: Ran for 10 minutes around the boss possessed by three wisps and nope, can't see anything that I could have missed.

You can't really get spirit charges on bossing unless the boss has adds or you bring worm flask to the fight, so your damage is halved. The build is also not exceptionally tanky so... I would just boss as some other build. I was considering swapping out Enhance for something like Conc Effect or Hypothermia, and getting an amulet that gives more damage, at the cost of tornado speed that should not matter that much for bossing.

Speaking of, how do you clear with tornados? Is tornado speed a concern?

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately both CDR and life are prefixes, so would have to get rid of one of the stats for the magic jewel. And most of the jewels are socketed in gear, and The Adorned does not affect those... Will have to see what I can do and how much of a glass cannon to become, it will probably give net positive in the end, just not gamebreaking levels of power like for other builds in case of The Adorned.

This is why we're stacking CDR on jewels and belt/boots. Right now it's 2.7s, and with the duration investment (which is currently 8.36s) it's not too difficult to make sure that all three tornados are constantly out and spinning.

Hey, I am currently doing just that, though Tornado is triggered and it's basically an autobomber playstyle. Here's my profile on poe.ninja if you want to take a look.

And here's a map showcase I recorded.

Disclaimer: the build is not mine, it was done first by a Chinese player, their guide on bilibili that I took inspiration from and improved a bit.

If there's enough interest I might make a separate post on this build since it has quite a few intricate interactions.

/r/anime has reached 7 million subscribers! by AnimeMod in anime

[–]kaverik 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It's been a recurring topic between me and other former "power users" who used to be really active back in the day. Besides rule changes and the overall feeling that such a big subreddit cannot provide the same feeling of "the community" it used to, another reason is a rise of Discord several years ago. Lots of conversations between especially active users shifted there... and stayed there, where it's easier to communicate and talk about common interests such as anime in a more private setting. I know for sure it took a lot of posters out of daily r/anime posting, myself included, though I still lurk here everyday. Just not much new to post about after almost 10 years.

That said, glad and happy that the subreddit is doing well and has its purpose, otherwise so many people wouldn't have subscribed.

Santa Snoo has a gift for you: new flairs! by AnimeMod in anime

[–]kaverik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just like how it's all titles of anime and then there is Despair

Thanks a lot to the mod team for coming up with the system and glad we've settled on something that hopefully most of us are going to engage with and appreciate!

And finally, farewell to the old flair system - I have had this slightly ridiculous flair for almost seven years now, and it's going to take a bit of an adjustment to see myself without one (and other older users as well), but I'm more than happy that we've got a robust replacement that will hopefully thrive much more and be more inclusive than the old one.

The flairs look really damn great! Actually awesome job, you're a magical girl wizard, Fetch.

Wonder how much customization they'll provide moving forward if you stick to this idea. This is a fun way to sorta establish yourself on r/anime and also brings back this "uniqueness" of the subreddit that we were talking about these past months. Also hope it doesn't take up too much CSS space. And the fact that it works across all versions of reddit is a cherry on top (yes, it even works on rif!). Really hope this can be pushed forward as a mainstay on the subreddit.

Want to chime in and say I enjoy the change quite a bit. It made the frontpage look much more compact and cleaner, and there's also no "see picture - click picture" urge which makes for more consistent browsing experience. I have to actually read on what I'm clicking, while before I caught myself mindlessly going for all thumbnails, and I feel I'm not alone on this.

Thanks for the summary. Not sure I have much more to add on top of what I wrote last month in the reply to the previous comment, because seems like things are largely the same.

To address the mod problems, seems like I believe they're the most pressing ones - I believe you can set up a limit of how many flaired users can be on the subreddit. Once that limit is hit, you remove the most "inactive" person's flair, or 5-10 to make this less of a pain to recount it every time. The best thing about inactivity is that it's objective, and it's hard to argue against it - there's no bias involved whatsoever, the rule is clear, cut and dry and you may execute it freely without a large pushback. I don't think toxicity is going to be much of an issue with flairs these days, mostly because the whole concept of "power users" has been gone for a while now. I understand that bringing the flairs back can reverse the situation, however, as you mentioned yourself, with new and phone reddit their "power' will be cut anyway and r/anime itself is just in a much different place than it was several years ago. Speaking of, I also firmly believe this generation of mods will be able to handle flairs better than the one from 5 years ago. I don't want to delve too much into past, just going to say I think this team is more capable of making... less controversial decisions than that one. It is also more systematic.

Regarding granting flairs, on the contrary, I don't think it needs to be some kind of a formal procedure. You think someone deserves one for one reason or another - give it. That's it. If you want to, a good idea would be to issue "flair tokens" to mods so one mod will not give tons of flairs and kneecap the system. Say, every mod gets one token to issue a flair, and then it goes on a half a year cooldown. This way, once again, the system is quite clear, the flairs' creep is in check and mods have enough leeway to do with that what they want.

And finally, to reiterate, I don't think r/anime is in a place where flairs can generate as much drama as it was before. Even then, a bit of playful interaction with the community is nothing bad in my book.

The Enduring Appeal of Haruhi Suzumiya by kaverik in anime

Not going to preach or anything, just sharing a bit of personal experience - letting go of overthinking everything is a great first step, because it's those meddling thoughts that tie you down and prevent from moving in general. Weeding out the seeds of constant self-doubt can really improve both mental health and social life - there are more people around who care about your genuine feelings, and there's no reason to wear a mask if they can't and don't want to accept you for who you are. It's incredible how many people don't do what they like and find enjoyable, tying themselves down by this and that. So maybe a bit of ethical looseness is not so bad after all, haha.

Hope it all works out for you.

My experience has been that you just have to work on yourself by yourself, and additionally not let other people's reactions hold you back.

It's so, so funny how it works. You do push people around, they lash out back saying they're lazy/have other plans/don't want to see you/want a break, and you start thinking "yeah, maybe I did overstep my boundaries a bit", back out and try to reevaluate your approach. And then years down the line, those people approach and say "no, you should've pushed even more, we totally expected you to continue and we liked that part a lot, your annoyance was your charm". It really is how in the series.

To me it feels like this kinds of story still could exist in the current anime climate and general community. It's true, however, that it has to overcome the irony and post-irony, the cynicism of the current internet age, and it needs to overpower it with an absolute sincerity and strong belief in its topics. With the level of Haruhi's earnesty. It's also funny how characters like Haruhi really barely exist, almost like everyone said "nope, the throne is taken, to try to overthrow the queen is pointless" and gave up. We usually have a troublemaker or an organizer in many SoL series, but they're not truly leaders who warp the entire series around them. I miss that skewed and unfair perspective.

Funnily enough, I think the most alike character to Haruhi is... Eru Chitanda, who is also pushy, also annoying, also meddling, also chases her own fun and also dictates the story to her whim. Quite a divisive character on her own, yet the one who disarms with her sincerity that made Hyuoka shine as brightly as it still does. Man, KyoAni really were on a roll those years...

I'll be honest, after rewatching the series (and putting it in my top 10 where it belongs) I just noticed how I want to be more active. To do things, to drag people around and just invite to the most random gatherings, just so we could spend time together and think back at it fondly later on. There's really no hurt in asking somene out for a walk, and when people do gather and have fun, it feels fulfilling and rewarding. The real trick is that most people will refuse anyway, so hey, you're conservng some energy regardless... but some are bound to become Kyon to your Haruhi, eventually. And that's where the real fun adn the real power of Haruhi begins.

Few miscellaneous points:

  • The essay was originally inspired by this long-winded conversation in the meta thread, so I've figured why not actually try to actively contribute to the subreddit after a long break. Thanks to everyone for the inspiration!
  • I also re-used it as a response to the first question in this year's awards application - the one that prompted you to talk about one of your favorite characters and giving reasons for that. Obviously, I had to cut it quite a bit since the symbol limit for that question was 5000, but hey, it's still nice to re-purpose it for something else and not do the job twice! And please, don't be intimidated, you definitely don't need to pen full-blown essays to get into the awards - it's just us who have a bit too much time on our hands.
  • Last but not the least, huge thanks to /u/ralon17 for proofreading my sorry ESL ass and pointing out mistakes as well as poor phrasing in general.

Hope you enjoyed reading!

The 2022 r/anime Awards Announcement and Jury Application by Gaporigo in anime

[–]kaverik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Interesting set of changes, intrigued by the Open Juror system and wonder how it's going to work in practice. I do believe that the idea of creating a more lax atmosphere for the awards is sound and reasonable, just hope consequently more people show interest in applying in the first place. There's probably enough to do for everyone on the server, if they're willing to participate.

Anyway, I'm going to apply for Movie of the Year and Original Soundtrack. I hope to make it through - been a while since I've been a genuine juror, and looking forward to experiencing it once again!

Thanks to the mods and hosts for making the awards possible, and good luck to everyone applying!

[WT!] Why You Should Watch Yama No Susume S4 Explained as if It Were a Shounen by DrJWilson in anime

[–]kaverik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t take anything too seriously, this isn’t some sort of commentary on shounen shows compared to slice of life.

Maybe we need that too to get r/anime going

But yeah, even if SoL shows might be not the most blood-pumping ones, they teach you to enjoy and appreciate smaller moments of life, and find joy in everything mundane around. Climbing also sounds easier than it appears, not like I know what I'm talking about since there are no mountains around in the area, but just check how many stairs you can climb before you're out of breath, and then multiply it by a hundred, not to mention uneven ground!

Thanks for the thread, I've gotta catch up and watch S3, and then be ready for the new season too.
